Amp power is coming from the battery and I am using the ground lug on the firewall to the side of the +12v side of the battery.

I would say even if you have never done one before the difficulty level is probably a 5-6 on a 1-10 scale.

Hi All,
I need to upgrade my c4's head unit as the factory PCM unit has died. I have spoken with a few local audio techs and they have all really pushed fancy touch screen radios which in total will be over $1000. (funds I would rather spend on mechanical maintenance)
However, I really want a single DIN simple radio which I know wont become outdated ect with time. Its just a personal preference.
Does anyone out there know if a single DIN radio upgrade is possible if I have the below pictured radio? Thanks for your help! The audio techs are really trying to talk me out of it for some reason.

I recommend you talk with the folks at Car Audio Innovations (
https://cai-store.com/
). They know their way around the 996's systems. I sourced my replacement head unit and install kit from them. Their custom wiring harness to connect aftermarket head units to the Porsche connector is worth the price of admission all by itself, and their customer service is top-notch.
Best of luck!
You could do a single DIN radio, but you would need a new cage behind the radio and then you move the HVAC controller up adjacent to it. You could just get a cubby for the HVAC controller and CD or Nav player, I have two cubbies in my car. Bought the pieces on ebay.
I did mine by myself in a few hours and paid a total of just over $400 from Crutchfield for EVERYTHING I needed to do the job to include the tools to remove some plastic on the dash. The only thing they didn't sell was the conversion piece to make the cigarette lighter into a USB/HDMI port I got that on Amazon for like 12 bucks.
The arrow in one of the pics is pointing to a button that I turned into a garage door opener, second best thing I have done to the car minus the radio.
Nice clean job! I spoke to Crutchfield as well and they told me i needed to run separate wires for the front and rear speakers. First i heard of that. They said their harness doesn't include them. Did you get a harness that had everything for easy plug and play?
Here is the list of what I ordered, I have the factory HIFI system, not all cars have that so I am not sure If that makes a difference. It was such an easy project the only thing I didn't use is the RCA cables they sent me I didn't need them. If this is an item you need let me know I will ship these to you assuming you don't live in Guam lol.

Oh yeah, vey true. Its about 75% no radio but sometimes you want to just blast some music. Also the navigation and Bluetooth come in handy with all the hands free laws.
To be fair I do enjoy the ability to play music off my phone. I usually have something on when im on a spirited car club drive but its usually drowned out by exhaust and concentration haha!
Thanks for everyone's comments and ideas.
@ Horsepwr that is an awesome price for what you did there. Looks great.
Did someone at Crutchfield walk you through the parts your required and how to do the install, or did you have previous experience working on radios ect.
Thanks!
one of the reasons i went single din.
i did my install myself. Its pretty much plug and play with the harness from Bergvill. Thats where i got the radio from too. There r direct replacement speakers and many write ups on adapting others. For the amp i bought it locally and they printed the wire diagram so i just had to make the connections. Depending on the radio/amp combo u may need to run rca cables. My amp has high and low voltage inputs so i just connected the speaker wires, high voltage.
Thanks Man! I've had plenty of experience with car audio BUT the people at Crutchfield walked me through what I needed to make this system work properly. I would say even if you have never done one before the difficulty level is probably a 5-6 on a 1-10 scale. Their instructions are clear, concise and in layman's terms if you ask me. The harness was plug and play, and the pointing kit was the same way. The only "fabrication" was filing down a couple nubs on the original radio bezel. The heat control unit moves easily and fits right in the lower spot. I recommend contacting this guy (including his info below and I believe the 434 number is his cell, I texted him a couple times. Nicest dude ever) if you want to do the project, he was phenomenal in knowing what was needed. What prompted this is I went to the local Sound FX store and they quoted me $2300+ for the SAME EXACT RADIO to be installed and I thought that was absurd. They told me that its a "highly complicated set up!' BULL****!!! The only reason I went there was I thought it would be a time value situation. I figured they would be 6-700 and it would be done, well damn I was wrong...
Disclaimer, I have ZERO affiliation with them, just had a great experience!
Haha. Picked up my 996 from Flat 6 Innovations yesterday. About half way through the hour drive home my wife said "doesn't the radio work". I laughed and said, "yes it does, but I'm enjoying the sound of the car".
I can totally relate. I love the sound of the car everytime I start it up. At the same time, there's also nothing like putting the top down in the summer and blasting Q104.3.
I just did a complete stereo upgrade replacing alle the wiring and using a separate amp and a double din radio and replaced all speakers. Stereo sounds great but I am having sa problem trying to figure out how to get rid of the engine whining noise. Everyone said it has to be a ground. I have checked and rechecked the grounds and they are all fine. I have grounded the rca cables and still have the noise. The only thing I have not done is run the speaker wires going through the car fire wall to the amp. temporarily outside the car to see if that's the problem. The best thing about the upgrade is having the navigation, bluetooth and a great sounding radio while driving on the the freeway. That antenna adapter will not work. You need the adatper that has a plug at the end to connect it to the oem antenna wire.
Most likely its where u picked up the power from. Grab power from the factory radio power wire, also change your ground location. If that doesnt help u will need a ground loop isolator.
Power is coming from the factory radio wire for the new radio. Changed ground location and picked up a ground loop islolator and still have the noise. Amp power is coming from the battery and I am using the ground lug on the firewall to the side of the +12v side of the battery. The -12v side of the battery is going to the same type of lug on the firewall.
Cheap RCA Cables can be on issue, running them along side the power cable can be another issue. I also posted a link to a solution although I haven't had to do this but Ive heard it works.

Finally solved my engine whine noise coming through my new radio completely. I had run my new rear speaker wires though a plastic track that runs along the passenger side door sil. There were wires already inside the track and I figured why not run the speaker wires in it so they are out of the way. this morning I took the speaker wire out and ran them temporarily to the speakers and the noise was gone from all speakers completely.
I just ordered a DD radio from Crutchfield. It's a factory refurb Kenwood DNX995S . I think I'll buy the amp from CAI. I'd like to have bought the HU from him too but the factory refurb was $450.00 less than his price.
I'm not clear on moving the HVAC stuff. Do I need a new wiring harness or is the wiring long enough?
Thanks!!
Dave
Sweet, sounds like a good deal! Relocating the HVAC is simple. The wiring is long enough and it fits right in the other spot. Took me a few minutes to finagle the wires to the lower location as its tight back there but its doable so don't get frustrated with it.
I have a similar setup but Kenwood with Alpine amp. Replacing the Fiberoptic was nowhere as bad as I thought! All the stock speaker wires were cut from the amp and put in the new amp. Work fine. Did it myself. Also added a rearview backup camera which is real nice and relatively easy install.
My car actually had the switch in it with nothing hooked up to it. I had to buy a universal remote, program it to my opener and then "hack" it in.

Heidi anf Frannys garage is a great youtube page. They have awesome DIY videos simplified for people to follow.
Only thing I do not like is all the other buttons are high gloss and this one is matte. Like I said, my car already had it so I went with it. Ive looked for a gloss one to no avail.
As far as I know all the cigarette lighters in cars are standard?

@kms1990
Just pulls off, pull harder - sometimes they have a little clip to release the connector but that one shouldn't have one. Is that a factory or aftermarket head unit?
Thanks all, I ended up prying the plastic cover off then using an flat head to sort of pry it off. Under the plastic there was a type of clip the held it on.
The cars came with a European cigar lighter and socket that was slightly larger in diameter than the US standard. I swapped mine out for a US size so that my accessories wouldn't keep falling out. I'm not sure if this would come into play with that USB plug or not.
I don't believe so, although the inside diameter was different I believe the "hole" on the dash were the same. This fit into my car fine with a little trimming of the back. Both HDMI and USB work. Its pretty sweet for ten bucks!
Looks factory and that is the best part about it. When you add a double din radio and this adapter it turns your car from an 01 to a 15 as far as looks goes quickly.
To be honest I do not use it, but if you have the cable that can plug into say your phone and has HDMI on the other end you can play movies/video on the screen. I did it to test it but I will never use that feature. I suppose if you had children it could come in handy on a longer ride, but most kids seem to have their own phones or iPads for that.
That's, why I like having 2 USB plugs 1 for the Apple Car and the other for her to charge her phone when she's with me. I don't imagine Ild have a use for HDMI.
I want to get rid of the MOST nonsense but I want to keep the amp by the spare tire hidden and out of the way. I understand that there aren't any 5 or 6 channel amps that will fit there. Lots of folks are going with the MOST adapter and keeping the old amp but in doing so they give up an fader control. If I don't care about fade, could I just use a three channel amp - assuming I can find a small three channel amp? I'd have 1-left side front and back, 2-right side front and back and 3-door speakers. I'm not an audiophile so not having great sound isn't a big deal to me.
