Made sure my son checked when I taught him to do an oil change.

I have taken it back off and cleaned the o ring "seat" on the housing, cleaned the o ring again and re installed.

(Obviously the o-ring gets replaced every filter change, right?)

So I changed the oil in the car and is continually leaks from the oil filter housing.

The oil change had been done about 1500 miles before I bought it so I figured I would address it when I needed to do another oil change which leads me to this post.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I changed the oil in the car and is continually leaks from the oil filter housing. Let me say I am very mechanically inclined with a pretty extensive background in auto mechanics so this should be simple for me lol. Here is where I am at. I have tightened the housing to speck with a torque wrench (17-18lbs) and it leaked. I did the old school hand tight and it leaked. I backed it off a little and it leaked. I tightened it hard and it leaked. I have taken it back off and cleaned the o ring "seat" on the housing, cleaned the o ring again and re installed.
Sometimes it seems to leak when cold but once it warms up it stops, other times it's the opposite. I just want the leaking to stop its driving me mad. I know I can't be this incompetent lmao..

As you can see it's the o-ring that's sealing it so as long as the canister is reasonably tightened, it should not leak.
Thank you, I was wondering if maybe the housing was warped. It is only plastic and I assume the heat from the exhaust and oil over time can warp them.
I hear you are the Guru on these cars so I am grateful you chimed in.
Anytime. My guess is either hairline crack or warping like you said. It's good to replace the canister anyway because you get a new bypass valve at the bottom of the canister.
Yes, it's at the bottom of the stock oil filter canister. If its spring becomes weak, it could open at cold start and send unfiltered oil directly to the main bearings, and everywhere else.
Yeah not trying to do that, I am ordering now. Why would people not change the housing with every oil change. This cost less than just the filter I got from Porsche.
Ahsai is spot on, if there is any doubt of the cartridge sealing surface replace it- cheap AND you get a new bypass valve.
But in my experience the housing rarely leaks UNLESS someone gouged the housing with a pick when changing the Oring. (Obviously the o-ring gets replaced every filter change, right?)
On my cars I have certainly experienced the housing SWEATING oil for the first couple heat cycles. You could swear youve cleaned it off perfectly and 24hrs later its wet.
For business your best chance is letting the car warm up to operating temperature before heavily washing the housing/block with parts wash. It can still sweat for another 24 hours but shouldnt form a drip
Interesting, maybe I am overthinking it. I will replace housing and see whats up. Maybe I am not giving it "seating time"? Yes the o ring was changes and I very careful removing the old ring. There was definite leaking from the housing before the change so maybe the previous person damaged the housing. I will find out soon enough, new o ring and housing on the way.
Oh there is no stupid questions. I believe its in the proper spot but maybe I am wrong. I put it back where the other came out of but that was leaking too... Maybe someone could post a picture?
DING DING DING we have a winner! So I have had a leak out of the filter since I got the car, small but there. The oil change had been done about 1500 miles before I bought it so I figured I would address it when I needed to do another oil change which leads me to this post.
The "tech" Before me just put the new on on the "lip" and left the old one in the grove. It had been there so long it was hard like plastic so I didn't think to remove it I thought it was like a double gasket situation. Well thanks to this post I realized it should be sitting on the lip so I broke out that brittle gasket put the new one in the right spot and we seem to be good.
Just goes to show you even with receipts you never know what some idiot may do. This is from a Porsche dealer too. Must have been that kids first day on the job, how does a dealer make this error?
Anyway I owe you a coffee lol
I was going to say that lol or what about oiling the o ring before screwing in the oil filter housing maybe it's dragging the o ring out of its seat if it's dry but the op seems knowledgeable so he's probably doing this already ??
I was oiling the o ring, I just didn't realize there was will an old ring on there. Previous oil changer left the old one and added a new one, I didn't realize that so I was double Gasketing as well.
Yes sir, that was the issue. As I was lurking around I now see some oil on the drivers side of the engine. I didn't jack the car up but I am thinking its the spark plug tubes? I know these are older cars and a minor oil leak here and there is normal and really no big deal but I don't want oil on my garage or driveway. Time to start to figure this one out... Suggestions??
I remember the first oil change I did. My father was teaching me step by step. So got all done turned the car on and oil starts spraying all over the place! I freaked out my dads yelling to turn off the car. Turns out he left off one step!! Make sure the old oil filter gasket came off with the filter and is not stuck on the car! My dad felt so bad for yelling at me and I NEVER did that again! Made sure my son checked when I taught him to do an oil change. Things you never forget!
If it's towards the back of the engine on that side, might be coming from one of the oil breather pipes on top of the engine or the AOS, or yes could be a plug tube!
