Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

They were replaced about 12K ago, I put in some big road trips, then checked them as I performed the new coil and plug work - no oil, nice and in order - but who knows w/out a bore scope.
Leading evidence: 'Replace they' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace coils and plugs' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

After a very straight forward removal and replace procedure, taking ample time and care to align the plugs properly, torque them properly, and install the coils to spec torque, I started the motor: white smoke out of the 1,2,3 bank - turned the motor off and read the codes: misfire on cylinder 1 and 3.

Did you replace the spark plug tubes at the same time?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This is my first post, after being a lurker for a number of years.
Why post now? I have an issue w/ my M96.01 that I have never seen, ever.
Scope: performing general maintenance, changing coils and plugs.
After a very straight forward removal and replace procedure, taking ample time and care to align the plugs properly, torque them properly, and install the coils to spec torque, I started the motor: white smoke out of the 1,2,3 bank - turned the motor off and read the codes: misfire on cylinder 1 and 3.
Reversed the procedure on cylinder one and removed the coil and plug, mostly.
Plug in cylinder one will not come out of the head tube. I've loosened the plug to its terminal thread and it dangles, like something is holding it back. The plug is slumped and lays on the plug tube, moves freely and spins freely, but catches on something and will not come out. I have grabbed it w/a pair of long reach needle nose, it moves horizontally but is caught by something and will not release.
Has anyone ever experienced this? I have never seen a motor not let go of a plug. Very strange.
Thanks,
Did you replace the spark plug tubes at the same time? If not, one of them could be cracked/broken and preventing the plug from coming out. Try removing the tube first. One thing that could cause misfires is if the coil wires aren't fully snapped in. They can appear to be properly seated but until you hear the click, they are not.
Excellent, thank you. They were replaced about 12K ago, I put in some big road trips, then checked them as I performed the new coil and plug work - no oil, nice and in order - but who knows w/out a bore scope. They're coming out tomorrow.
Be extremely carefull if it is a loose spark plug tube. If the spark plug is damaged or broken and the tube is removed, parts can and will drop down into the motor and then you are.......in trouble to say it nice. I would suggest getting a borescope or mirror and try to look before possibly making a bad problem worse.
