Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Dear all, Today I got my new 996 and wanted to share my happiness with you all. Previously I was driving a 991 c2s convertible and before that a 996 4S 6speed. I realized the cost and experience (heavy car, filtered experience) of the 991 was not for me - so I looked for my dream car, black black aerokit and as much factory as possible, here it is! 2002, 6 speed, carrera 2, aerokit, sport suspension, PSE, Porsche traffic pro GPS, 55k miles the car is 100% like it left the factory, all options on the sticker will post more pictures soon

POST 2Original post

It would be nice to know exactly why you prefer the 996 over the 991. Not something I would have expected

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

the 991, I had it for 20 some '000 miles, daily use (carrera 2s, dark blue, black leather, black top, 21 wheels) let's start with the positive: smallest gas consumption of any porsche I have driven convertible perfectly confortable - soft top like a hard top in board technology - I had the distance adjusting cruise control, it works perfectly like on a mercedes s class convertible but perfectly rigid sport mode very fast and great handling / on open freeways went up to 300km/h no problem - 1 hour 250km/h used only 13 liters of gas - incredible efficiency real 4 seater: rear seats much bigger than previous image: arriving with the latest brand new 911 is something - but not always positive negatives now: big - it feels much wider and longer than the 996 or 993 - you feel far away from the street the 991 pdk defaults to the energy saving mode, with start stop but most specifically control on the every engine reaction in order to save gas and polution - the car is a catastrophy to drive like this, one of the slowest car I have ever driven, and then it quicks down and you might kill somebody because it comes at once electric steering: you feel away from the road - it works well but there is just that little less connexion you need to program the car for what you want it to do, when you go from cool to fast, you need to first think about pushing the buttons the right way etc too many gears... drop in value: 991 are not like the old time porsches - values drop very fast like any standard car, MBenz etc - 18 months driving a 991 cost you much more than buying a 996 even if you throw it away at the end most importantly: if you post it on sport hard suspensions, it is a great track car, but very unconfortable there are so many functionalities in the computer and so many buttons on the dash that you end up focused on other stuff than driving pdk is cool, much more efficient etc than standard gear shift - but at the end, I want a car to enjoy driving, and for me the experience includes a classic gear shifter the 991 is a great car, don't take me wrong, but the experience is not any more what I like from porsche: light small sport car but humble etc

POST 6Original post

Here, let me distill that down for you Seriously though, if I knuckled under to fashion and got an automatic Porsche I would be out of it quick as $h!t through a goose. I'd rather drive a Golf TDI with a stick than a 911 with PDK, and I've driven several of both. Just a matter of personal taste, no disrespect meant to the guys who like the automatic, but in the end, one buys a Porsche out of personal taste, not necessity.

POST 9Original post

Gorgeous 996! Unfortunetly for me, I grabbed a base 996 due to its price. Now I'll be spending money In my future for a gt3 aero kit. But I knew that when choosing my car.

POST 11Original post

Welcome back! Enjoyed your perspective on the differences with the new cars. I think every manufacurer is facing the issues you raise because there are so many compromises that need to be made now, versus just limitations in the past. I know they'll continue to sell more cars but I have some real concerns about these models when they get to be the age of our cars, and depreciation is the least of the issues I fear. Gonna keep mine as well, it has what I need.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

closing the topic... now back into a 991 manual best of both worlds

POST 13Original post

oh really?! I was just going to add did the same. Swapped a 991C2S PDK for a 996 manual. The steering and PDK were biggest disappointments in the 991.1 for me. Great build quality, but felt like a fast Audi to me.

POST 14Original post

Congrats!!! The 996 is my favorite generation and my 996 is my forever car....however, its hard to say that I have ever driven a better car than my 991 Turbo S....its got to be the best all round sports car ever built....so ultimately I think it all just depends what you want it for.

+1 I loved my 996, and I loved my 997. The 991 TTS is simply fantastic. I always wonder about the comments on electric steering. I find the electric steering (with RAS) in my 991 to be superior to the hydrolic steering in my 997. I suppose it does come down to personal preference.

POST 16Original post

Great looking car... love the simple Carrera wing. Can't wait to see other pictures of the car!

POST 17Original post

Im curious as to why you went back to the 991 vs. a 7.2 with a manual. I would honestly prefer a 991 with PDK for an every day car vs virtually any car, including other 911 generations. But the 991 is a pretty different driving experience than a 6 or 7. So Im wondering why youd go back to it, even with a manual, if you prefer to have a car you just drive rather than having a car with a lot of buttons and gizmos. Did you realize how much more convenient the more modern car is for daily use? Did you figure out all you were really missing was another pedal and a manual gear selector? What was the transition directly from the 996 to 991 gearbox like? It just seems so weird to go from an aero kitted, highly optioned 996 coupe to a 991 cab...especially considering you were coming from a 991 cab in the first place. It seems like there would be some pretty cool back to back comparisons fresh in your mind right now.

POST 18Original post

A friend of mine has owned a series of new Turbos over the years. He loves the adrenaline rush of the Turbos, but his favorite car to drive has always been his old 997.1 6-speed coupe. He loves the Turbos, but regrets trading in the 997 and has long been considering getting another 997. He never owned a 996, but I suspect he might even like the 996.1/6-speed/coupe better given that it is lighter than his old 997 and it was the "light sports car" feel that caused him to miss the 997 so much. He just picked up a 911r (after a long search to find one that wasn't ridiculously overpriced), which is 6-speed, 3025 lbs, and 500hp. I suspect that his "lightweight manual car" itch has been scratched a bit now with the 911r, but there is unquestionably something very special about the early modern era naturally aspirated 911's.

Did you keep the 996? If not, are you having any regrets about once again selling a 996 to go back to a 991? I'm assuming your avatar pic is a pic of your new 991...looks great, enjoy!

POST 20Original post

Welcome back?? Assuming you kept the 996 and also added a 991 manual?

POST 21Original post

A two year old quote, but I totally get that. I bought a Tiptronic as I wanted more of a GT car and as a daily car for commuting. I love it, but what I'm finding is I can't really use all of the engine range - the way it's geared with the tiptronic.... You dont get to wind the engine round towards the red at even close to legal speeds. It's made me think I actually need an older 911 again, as well as the 996, with less power so I can use the engine without being jailed and getting my car impounded LOL

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks for all the cool feedback here I answer a few comments randomly: - use for the car : not daily, neither family (previously cayenne now x5), I use the car for spirited driving in the south of france or some mountain roads - pdk vs manual : I love, seriouly love, driving. Have done some track but definitely not my cup of tea, I don't car about being quicker than other people etc. Sure the pdk is quicker at the limit, but on a daily basis it is a fully different experience - like driving a suv or a limousine - by the way - my pdk had ACC - once you go for automatic, you should go the whole, the porsche system is absolutely perfect - I unfortunately didn't get to keep the 996 - needed cash in the middle of a project and used my 996 and my cayenne ! as payment, it is amazing how close these are to cash - yes, the avatar is the car : cabrio carrera s with 7 speed manual - best of both worlds: 991 cabrio immensely rigid so that you may drive fast top down, listening to th eengine noise
