I bought a Fiat X1/9 back in the early 90s for $100 (I paid off the mechanic's lien) that had a "blown headgasket" that turned out to only need a new $8 timing belt.

If I were replacing the bearing on my 2002 (which I will never do myself because it is an AT replacement large single row, and I am not skilled enough to split the case), I would definitely go for the Solution.

A local shop had told the owner the engine had leaked oil into the coolant and the entire engine needed replacing and that's why it wouldn't run smoothly and had no power.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

While I have the transmission out of my 2000 996 (with a dual row IMS bearing) I figure Ill replace the bearing. It currently has a LN bearing from 2015, which is fine, but this seems like a good time to preventatively update it. No time like the present since the transmission is out. I have the LN tools to do the job already.
Does anyone know who carries the LN dual row classic Retrofit for the best price? Does anyone know if there are black friday sales that might apply?
Im not losing sleep over the bearing, but Ill probably sell the car eventually, and Id like to have this as a non-issue.
As a buyer, what kind of evidence would you want to show that the bearing had been replaced? Since Im doing it myself, Ill only have a sales reciept and any evidence that I can provide (pictures, etc.). If Im going to bother doing the work, I want to get the value out of it.
Thanks!
PS. I will replace the flywheel and pressure plate bolts with new ones, and I already have the right sealants. I probably wont touch the RMS unless is has signs if wear/failure, since I just replaced it with the latest version a year ago (under 1000 miles driven).
You can usually find the best deals on LN Engineering stuff from Charles’ eBay account:
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...pg=50&_fosrp=1
Looks like you can save a couple hundred dollars.
Picture proof(pre-qualification) and maybe a short video should work.
Don't forget the prequalification steps documented with pictures. I as a buyer would be leery of a DIY job! Not saying you can't do it right but a professional installation is worth its weight in gold to me...
When i purschased my car from the dealer i had them take a bunch of pictures throught the process. Not just close up pictures but several that actually showed the car on the lift, some from a distance showing the trans coming out and some up close of the repair. I figured if i do ever sell it there is no question it was done. I don't think this will work in your case but the old bearing can be sent in to LN with paperwork to document on their site that its been done. However i am not sure if they will since you are doing it as a DIY instead of through a shop. But either way, pictures are hard to argue with.

When I called the dealer that did it I asked why they did not tell me that when I called before to check on car, there response was we only keep records for 2 yrs, go figure!
So I have a Ln bearing kit and seal that I will at reduced price if any body interested.
Thanks
John
An authorized LN installer will affix a barcode to the door jamb drivers side near the strike plate. That barcode identifies the bearing that has been installed by serial number.
Thanks, all. Im following up with the offer.
Ill do the pre-qualification, take a ton of pictures, and make sure I get up close and on the lift pictures.
Im not doing the Solution, since this is not my forever car. If I were replacing the bearing on my 2002 (which I will never do myself because it is an AT replacement large single row, and I am not skilled enough to split the case), I would definitely go for the Solution. With this car, itll get the LN replacement, and that will be good for several years. The work is no big deal for me, so if on some off chance I still have it in the reccomended replacement interval, Ill just do the work to replace it again.
That price is not the LN IMSB on my website. This is what I show:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/LN-IMS-Retr...8:pf:0&vxp=mtr
$639. Still a good price. I believe the $549 is for the RND product.
I did the bearing myself. Took plenty of pics, before, during, after, and with the old bearing in my hand as it came out of the car. Also kept the bearing for the next buyer of the car. I also had a helper who could verify that the bearing in my hand came out of the car I said it did. The offered warranty of a new bearing was a microscopic piece of the total cost should the installed bearing have failed. A check for $700 is cold comfort when staring at a $20k engine rebuild.
The seller on the ebay link is LN? or who? Someone mentioned Charles but I don't understand why these would be offered on ebay cheaper than LN's website?
Looking at this ebay link a little more, the IMS Solution offered by the seller "type4store" is $500 less than LN's website, $1371. I also notice this same store offering Pelican's ims bearing kit.
Comes in a box with a label and receipt from LN Engineering.
Charles said it was his eBay account several months ago.
The tools are "used", although mine looked like they had never been touched.
I ordered both IMS bearing installation tool sets earlier this year.
I'm tempted to get the Faultless toolset and save myself some cash.
Hopefully it's still around in a couple of weeks!
They have only 1 Pelican bearing for sale.
Maybe they were looking at it and are reselling it now.
It might have been an example of "here's what the competition's looks like."
Just guessing!
Yes, but it comes without the tool rental option.
That's a great deal for anyone who already has the tools, like me.
I can buy The IMS Solution for a second personal 996(or 986) a little cheaper.
I can also offer The IMS Solution install locally and save having to ship their 996 300 miles away to the nearest Certified Installer.
Note: I'm currently swamped with customer vehicles, so I'm NOT offering The IMS Solution installs right now.
The seller on ebay is "type4store". There are multiple retailers of the LN products, this one chose a retail price that is attractive to buyers. Another vendor that I used to buy my bearing was Roger at 928sRUS.com. He sells plenty of parts for 996 He's a nice guy, ask him for a price. He does not sell on ebay, but may match their price if possible.
^^ "Professionals" make mistakes all the time because the quicker they do the job the more $$ they make - they also often get paid to fix what they screwed up in the first place. This is my whole impetus for doing as much work myself as possible (all except for the most intense stuff like a full engine re-build - hence sending my motor to FSI). I have a fairly comprehensive set of tools, a comfortable work-space, I take my time, fair mechanical skills and I work carefully and pay attention. This is not to say that "a DIY job" is automatically a good one, just that it shouldn't be disqualified out of hand. Also, not all "professionals" are bad or incompetent - not by any means...I just wouldn't automatically assume something was done correctly unless I had personal experience with said "Professional"...

Hello, I have a 2003 targa and I have a kit that I bought and was doing seals, plugs, water tak, water pump and IMS as part of preventative maintenance .When we pulled engine I found out I have a newPorsche engine fitted in 2010, so kit is no good.Read below
Hello finally worked it out, sorry for confusion.
My kit is RND engines part for a 2002-2005 911 and 986 boxster.
Go to web site
Inengineering.com

The kit is now priced at $699 on there website, maybe I have priced mine low especially with new seal as well.
I have receipt and registration card

+996!!!
I had a car(2001 Honda Accord with 160K miles) towed to me last Thursday.
A local shop had told the owner the engine had leaked oil into the coolant and the entire engine needed replacing and that's why it wouldn't run smoothly and had no power.
They quoted her $2500 to repair with a used engine.
They charged her $75 for their diagnosis.
She stopped there because it acted up just a few blocks from them and didn't think she could make it to my place.
She had it towed from their place to mine.
Because I'd worked on her car before,(just 2 weeks before) and because of who she was, the car got bumped up to nearly the top of my list.
(I had ordered a valve cover gasket a couple of weeks ago, and told her to bring it by soon because it was leaking badly.)
I finally got to it late on Friday.
Radiator was full of nice green coolant...hmmm
The crankcase was a little low on oil, but not out.
No milkshake on oil cap...hmmm
The oil was nice and clean(2 weeks old in fact)...the outside of the engine was filthy from the valve cover gasket leak.
I added a quart of oil and it started up, but had a bad misfire in cylinder #2.
The car had 150psi across all 4 cylinders...hmmm
I found that oil had leaked into the distributor and had pooled up around the cylinder #2 post.
...to make a long story not quite as long as it could be...
On Saturday I replaced the distributor seal, installed a new cap and rotor, new wires and plugs, and the valve cover gasket and away it went Saturday evening.
I got a text from her later saying the car had a lot more power and was much smoother.
Total cost to the customer...$43.
Total she should have been charged by the shop IMHO, $300-$400.
BTW, I provide free labor and reduced/free parts for low income individuals.

, if you own a Porsche 996, you don't qualify!
I've profited before from people making bad diagnoses.
I bought a Fiat X1/9 back in the early 90s for $100 (I paid off the mechanic's lien) that had a "blown headgasket" that turned out to only need a new $8 timing belt.
Broken timing belt can also cause no compression.
The mechanic who made that diagnosis was a trained aircraft mechanic.
He worked in the shop with me...we gave him a hard time for years over that mistake!
I sold the Fiat a few months later for $1600. (over 3 months rent at the time)
I've made mistakes working on cars and had to redo my work.
It happens.
I hate when it does, so I've learned to minimize my mistakes.
My sad saga. I have a 06 Dodge megacab 4x4 crew truck. It actually goes off highway, and is used in the snow regularly. I had a 'professional' shop work on my xfer case as the chain would jump and make a loud crack. First time through, they replaced the drive sprocket and chain, but not the driven sprocket. Of course, after 11,000 miles and 9 months, it was doing it again. Back to the same shop. New chain, both sprockets, but didn't replace the PTO bearing and seal. ATF leaks out because the bearing is wobbly, chain wears, and jumping again after 6200 miles and 7 months. Back to the same shop. This time, I gave clear and concise instructions: Remove and replace the chain, both sprockets, input shaft front and rear bearings, PTO front bearing, both seals. We will see how it goes.
We have returned or blemished product that has been repackaged and is fully functional on eBay. It's basically our factory outlet.
We have had so many complaints from buyers who have purchased product from various eBay sellers, only to find the product has been previously installed or is damaged and can't be installed, followed by those sellers not refunding customers their money.
We periodically will match pricing from other sellers to try to ensure you can buy from us with confidence.
Hopefully that resolves your question as to why we have product listed for less than retail on eBay.
