Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, Back with more concerns... why does my 996 engine, when cold, make a sound like lumber going through a table saw. Not constant but every few seconds. Kind of cool sound, but cant imagine its a good thing. Thanks.

POST 2Original post

Open the engine lid and listen to the SAI pump run. It runs at first start and cold engine. When the bearings start to go bad, it sounds like a buzz saw. Proper noise is a gentle hum, like a small vacuum cleaner motor. The SAI pump is on the left side of the engine bay, black and looks like a small motor with hoses coming from it.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the fast response. Bearings as in IMS bearings that means total end of my car? Please say NO. Thanks.

POST 4Original post

No, bearings as in the bearing on the shaft of the fan in the SAI (Secondary Air Injection) pump that he described. Go look under the engine lid and listen

POST 6Original post

Post a video or audio of the sound. We love listening to all these different and strange 911 sounds to try to figure out what causes it. How long does the noise last? Only on cold start? Does it go away? Have you tried removing the serpentine belt to see if its present with the belt off (dont run the engine with the belt off more than 60 seconds please).
