After rereading your post, I somehow missed the "it will JS from another car"...Ignore my starter theory and check the battery cables and even the battery itself for proper cranking amps (just went through that on a friends Jeep Liberty).

I totally forgot you can jumpstart at the engine and that gave me the idea to check on the voltages there and lead me to the battery positive terminal.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

SOLVED! Just clicks. New battery on maintainer and registers 13.+ volts on dashboard and voltmeter (but only shows ~12.3 on one of those cig. lighter voltage meter). I replaced the battery with a new one with AGM type 880 CCA. It starts when you jumpstart from another car but will not start with a fully charged portable battery charger. Not sure what's wrong. First time I've seen this. All fuses checked and all okay. Any info is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

POST 3Original post

Are you jumping it directly at the battery? Or at the engine?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15437911

Curious why it's the starter? Thanks.

POST 5Original post

Its not the starter if it starts when jumped from another car. battery should show 14 volts not 13 I believe. I would also check your grounds and the battery connection.

POST 7Original post

^^This is an excellent question. A battery would not be at 14 volts while sitting on a maintainer, depending, I guess, on the maintainer and where it is in the charging cycle. 13v seems reasonable to me. The 12.3v also seems reasonable to me at the cig lighter plug, as well as there is always a +/- with a measuring device. It's a 12v battery. I always hear about the "Y" cable in the engine compartment being a problem due to possible corrosion. i.e. high resistance connection. Never dealt with that issue but many have.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 15438812

hence the reason i asked it. The Y cable is known for corrosion and high resistance. If the OP is jumped it directly at the battery then this cable is not the issue and it would be something more like a new defective battery, bad ground cable at the battery or high resistance at the battery terminals. If he can jump start it at the engine then the Y cable is highly suspect. Voltage drop test would be needed.

POST 10Original post

Y cable. It's been revised twice I think. Mine had hard starts no matter how great the batt was. Repl the Y cable, and it cranked fast and strong. Just do it.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

PROBLEM SOLVED! Thanks for all your input. It turned out the problem was with the positive terminal on the battery post. It was not seated well. It was 1/8 of an inch higher. Meaning there is still 1/8 on an inch to go lower on the post. And that was why it wouldn't start from a portable jumpstarter when connected at the battery but starts when jumpstarted at the engine side. Thanks again!

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15439806

I guess it's one of those things. I totally forgot you can jumpstart at the engine and that gave me the idea to check on the voltages there and lead me to the battery positive terminal. I'm just glad it's fixed now!

POST 14Original post

great job, most of the time it is the Y cable, I upgraded my Y cable to 1/0 gauge cable, 110 degree's and hot engine doesn't even faze it.
