Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Use small 1/4" ratchet' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect hardline' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I did drop the transmission; I was initially hoping to not have to disconnect the hardline to the slave cylinder.

How did you replace the fork and ball pivot without dropping the transmission?

In retrospect, I did the work on a low rise lift - it might have been easier to access if I'd used a full height lift and could stand underneath.

Then just use a short socket with a short wobble extension on those two bolts on the slave cylinder.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Anyone got any? It's a mother getting those bolts out while the transmission is in the car. I imagine reinstalling is gonna be even tougher due to the hard line in the way. I'd prefer to NOT disconnect the hard line as I don't want to have to rebleed the clutch/brakes again. And I don't want to make a mess.
On my 996.2, it helpa to unbolt the braclet that holda down the hard line close to the slave. Then just use a short socket with a short wobble extension on those two bolts on the slave cylinder.
I've been lucky and never found any problem reinstalling the slave cylinder. The transmission will need to be tilted (or engine lowered a bit). I just push it (hard) toward the rear of the car and hold it there with my left hand while I insert one of the bolts with my right hand.
Yup, me too. I was worried after reading all the stories but it was super easy for me. I had engine lowered on mounts a bit, but it came off easy and back on just as easy. I used a small 1/4" ratchet to get in there. Bolts are not super tight, only small. Getting an eyeball on them was hardest part, but you can do it by feel.
^^This is how I did mine, as I was planning on bleeding the system when done anyway. The hard line was a major pita to reconnect as its difficult to see and very tight quarters - you can only turn a wrench about a 1/2 inch at a time. Its also difficult to get the fitting at just the right angle to thread in properly. You really need to take your time and proceed very carefully. It took me about 45 minutes to reconnect that line...
The first time I reinstalled a 996 6MT slave cylinder, I somehow misaligned things and the rod came out of the slave. I got to drop the transmission again to sort it out, and buy a new slave cylinder, so I did double the work. I guess I'm just a bit gun shy as a result.
In retrospect, I did the work on a low rise lift - it might have been easier to access if I'd used a full height lift and could stand underneath.
Ive got a lift that Im doing the work on but I cant quite get it high enough to fully stand upright. So Ive got it lowered a bit so I can sometimes sit in a chair. I cant imagine doing this job on jack stands. Much respect to those of you that pulled it off.
Ill be be curious to see what the part number is on the slave when I finally get eyes on it. Supposedly Porsche has superseded it a bunch of times.
As an update, Ahsai was Winner Winner Chicken Dinner with the tip on removing the hard line mount.
Also, my slave was an old 996 version and looked to be in terrible shape. I replaced it with the new version as well as the updated 997 fork and ball pivot.
