That is what my driving instructor recommended until I get better and add some other mods to the car.

Use pagid yellow pads (rs29 if i remember correctly)

I would be using the Sebro slotted rotors which are about $300 a set, as I recall.

I purchased the Akebono Euro ceramic pads to use with them as well.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi! I recently had my brake pad indicator light come on, so it's time to do my brakes. When I search for pads & rotors, I see a wide range of prices and brands. My 996 has 137k miles on it and it's now a daily driver to work (quickly). I don't need anything for racing, but if anyone has any advice on what brands I should look to, I would appreciate it. The local Porsche dealership quoted each rotor at about $250/ea and pads were another couple of hundred.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
I bought rotors from Brake Performance. They are zinc coated, machined in the USA, and their premium versions have a lifetime warranty against warping. Sounded like a good proposition to me. We will see how they perform.
Good combination for the track. I was looking at the Pagid yellows for the front (26?) And blacks for the rear (19?). The pads are about $600 for the set, so I'm not sure which Pagid pads you are referring to. I would be using the Sebro slotted rotors which are about $300 a set, as I recall.
I bought a set of Textar pads and Meyle rotors in the meantime. They were about $400 total, as I recall. That is what my driving instructor recommended until I get better and add some other mods to the car. He said that when they get worn, just throw them all away and install a new set.
Sorry, I have Sebro rotors and Textar pads on my 2002, and Meyle rotors and Textar pads on the 2000. Both are economical ways to go, Meyle rotors are less expensive, but Sebro is better quality. Zimmerman are another low cost option. Ive been browsing Pagid pads for track use, and got confused.
+1 for Akebono's. My Mercedes and Lexus both have them. no noise and I can go weeks without any noticeable brake dust. My 996 can't go a few days without the wheels looking like crap with the OE Porsche pads and squeal like hell. Also as a mechanic I can tell you customers who lover their cars LOVE when we sell the Akebono's. They almost always come back bragging about the lack of dust. There is also another recent thread about a low dust option and you will see many other members stating the same.
Great prices on RockAuto. I got the Pagid rotors and they seem to be holding up quite well (3 months driving + 3 track days). As mentioned above, I also use Pagid Yellow Pads (RS29 if I remember correctly). Great on the track/street and low squeal. I also tried the Pagid Black pads, but too loud (for me) for the street.
I am far from an expert here, but I got my set of meyle rotors and ceramic pads on ebay, another member says he has them for sale to for around $250. I just learned the value of bedding them in properly and now they are great. I have about 2,000 miles on them so far in a few months. Economical, not race inspired.
Look at the thread "Pads that don't dust too much".
I think I pay about 65ea for rotors. They are aftermarket but Ive been using them for years - I have to change them every season - but it all balances out.
For a street-driven car (or a track-driven car for that matter actually) you can't go wrong with Meyle rotors and Textar pads. The rotors are dirt cheap, work well, and have a nice coating on them so they don't rust outside the swept area. The pads are original equipment, just with Textar branding instead of Porsche. You should be able to re-pad and rotor the entire car for about $350-400. I use this equipment on the track with no issues, so for the street it'll be more than adequate!
+1. Essentially identical to my earlier post. I went with the Meyle rotors and Textar pads for my current set. About $400 total, as I recall. I don't have any track time on them yet.
All great recommendations above, but Id strongly suggest not trying to find a combo street/track brake pad. They just dont exist. Go oem-spec or akebono for street, and swap race pads for the track. Anything else is a huge compromise.Unfortuately the same holds true for tires, so the best bet is a second set of wheels with track tires to swap out with the pads. More satisfying, safer, and cheaper in the long run. Granted Im driving a TT that is a lot harder on brakes & tires.
