Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suspected cause
In my experience with used car dealers, it's probably the latter.
Leading evidence: 'latter' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'latter' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean records 2-owner' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Comparables are just all over the place, and obviously theres a disconnect between list price and actual purchase price but alleged sale prices on ebay, auctions houses - nothing is consistent, this is madness!

I'd use Bring a Trailer's history of 996 sales to find similar comps.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Newbie here, wondering if anyone could help me price a 99 C4 Tip with 152,xxx on the clock. Comparables are just all over the place, and obviously theres a disconnect between list price and actual purchase price but alleged sale prices on ebay, auctions houses - nothing is consistent, this is madness! ....Clean records 2-owner, but no IMS service history. How much would you or a reasonably educated buyer pay?
Cosmetically decent, normal scratches on the bumper that stand out on the arctic silver paint. Mechanically, there is ticking noise from the engine bay which I guesss I also expect from a car this old. Engine rebuild in the near future for sure. His last counter was $8700 and I'm planning to accept his offer tomorrow morning........I'm taking anyone's final objections before we seal the deal.
True, thanks for reminding me. Fluid change seems easy. In the DIY below, magnetic drain plug showed ALOT of metal shavings so these things maybe ticking time bombs for sure.

Seems like a small part, but I'll guess $2-3 grand. Here's one off of a 91k miles C4 selling for $999 and seller says its leaking fluid.

Get a PPI. Before committing. If it is ticking and needs a full rebuild it is essentially a roller which seem to go for 5-7K. There are other causes for ticking. If you are planning on a rebuild, unless this is the exact spec, color you want, you are better off paying $20+ for a car with a good history.
The price is great if the car would pass a PPI, but it's my bet that the ticking noise could is bore scoring which means a full rebuild. You must understand that rebuilding these motors will cost as much as the entire car is worth. During a rebuild it's wise to replace all common known wear components like the AOS, RMS, IMS bearing, water pump, etc. This could easily push a rebuild towards $20K unless you have access to a ton of cheap parts and labor. For example, to just install the IMS on a tiptronic, you must remove the entire engine and transmission unlike manual transmissions where you can get by just removing the transmission alone. That's a lot more labor involved with tips.
Its a tough choice for sure. Honestly in the $5k range I'd gladly take it on as (worst case) future roller. The 996 is a great car, but these LIST prices are wildly inflated - i can't believe any reasonable buyer pays over 10k for a high mileage 996 considering the probable need for a rebuild....I think sellers presume that there's some collectors value - simply not true absent a turbo or gt2/3 model. Here's the car with an updated list price....

They've had it on their lot a while now.
Looks like they've reduced it to $8595.
I'd offer a lot less considering it has had 7 owners, has some potential issues, and is a less desirable automatic.
If it were me I'd inspect it and let them know how many issues I could find.
If you can work on it yourself, then its a possibility.
Could be a great car...could be a money pit.
I'd bet it's closer to a money pit, especially if you're going to pay someone for repairs!
Good luck!
Where did I get the idea it was an automatic?!?
Yeah, if it is a manual (and it was local) then I'd definitely be more interested in it for $8600.
The price probably is not too bad I guess, unless it is going to need a rebuild right away.
If you can drive it for a while before rebuilding, then that helps the price some.
I'd still check it with my Durametric and my manometer before buying it.
If those checked out OK, I'd consider looking at least at the oil filter before going forward.
also noticed it still has plates on. either on consignment or a buy-here pay-here repo....ugh....hagerty's guide says to knock off -15% off the list price if no IMS records are available. that will be my reluctant best and final.
I would skip this car. You would probably regret it. If you are interested in a 996, there are many deals to be had that are in fantastic shape. This could become a real cash flow hit real quick. Buy the nicest 996 you can afford and you'll thank us later.
If the dealer says it has a ticking noise, they are either very honest and forthright, or they are covering their butts on an engine that's about to eat itself. In my experience with used car dealers, it's probably the latter. With an asking price of about $8500, I would check it out. If the engine still has some life left, it could be a decent deal. A PPI is highly recommend.
152k miles plus a ticking engine? You know this is roller price - right? I'm a bottom feeder, and like a good deal as much as the next guy - if not more. But - you pay $8500 for a roller, drive it for 3 months/2000 miles and need $8k for a used engine, or $17k for a rebuild. Where's the economy in that? Is it a magic color? Does it have every option known and unknown to Porsche? Did you pop your cherry in it back in the day? I mean, what's the attraction?
Keep looking. Your prince will show up one of these days. I shopped for almost 2 years before pulling the trigger and got pretty much everything I wanted, and it was close to me too.
