Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey Guys - Getting PPI done on a 996 that just had a major service including IMS. Only issue with it is I don't like the headlights and taillights (but may be open to keeping taillights when I see in person). Curious if people think these were tinted or something aftermarket. Want to replace and get them clear, but not sure the best way to go about, sanding down, buying complete new assemblies, or if you can just by the lens cover (concerned about water sealing then though). Thanks, Justin

POST 2Original post

I say smoke tinted film and you can remove it gently with a heat gun or hair dryer. Usually you can find a corner and then pull it right off. Forget about a new assembly...they run about $2500+ a headlight. It is a Florida car I see, so if you don't want to tackle the job, any good tint shop will remove the film at not much cost, then polish up the headlights and you are good to go.

POST 3Original post

I've seen that done before and it was a spray on application, similar to spray paint, but it was some type of special polyurethane coating. I'm don't think it could be peeled off, but I'm sure you could remove it with a chemical application or something like that.

POST 4Original post

The original tail lights on my car were "smoked". It was some type of clear coat with black paint mixed in. It will not come off I and did not want my brake light dimmed in any way. I bought a set of LEDs you can see in my avitar. I also just bought a set of LED headlights that I think will look great on my black car. I will install them this weekend if I have the time. They were $948 on eBay and have a gloss black interior.

POST 5Original post

Keep an eye on ebay for the tail lights you can Pickup a set for reasonable money. Headlights as mentioned are more difficult and expensive - they are also RHD or LHD specific making overseas purchases tricky.

There were several types of headlights from the factory. My 99 came with the basic halogens so the LED lights I bought are plug and play. I assume left hand or right hand drive wouldn't make a difference for these. The tail lights were about $250 for the pair and I have been very pleased with them.

What are the LED bulbs like? Any concern around the mount of heat they output in the enclosure? The bulbs or types of headlights not so much between LHD and RHD but the beam direction differs between them. You shouldn't use headlights that are incorrect for your side of the road because you will blind oncoming drivers

POST 8Original post

I'm shocked that the car isn't on black wheels. SHOCKED! Try a car parts website for replacements if it turns out it doesn't come off with heat. If you're lucky you may find lenses. Good condition full Xenon assemblies are $900-1200.

POST 9Original post

If it's nightshade (the spray-on crap), you can buff/fine sand it off and polish and re-clear...way cheaper than new litronics.
