Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thought I would post a quick question about oil residue in the intake plenum. Removed throttle body and found a coating of oil covering all plastic intake parts. Is this normal or a sign that my air/oil separator is starting to fail or clog up. Thanks for any and all responses....

POST 2Original post

Yes to AOS. No, not normal. While it is normal to see some residue in the TB and intake, a bad AOS will coat everything with oil.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

DBjoe, Thanks for the quick response. I have dropped the tranny out of my 996. Would this be a good time to replace the AOS? I think I read that lowering the engine will help in the task of replacement as well. Please let me know what the best way to proceed might be. Will probably be tough to access the separator regardless. I'm in the midst of replacing my IMS bearing as well. Old one looks brand new, but single row so will replace. I know L&N has a single row replacement, but is real expensive. Are there options that are as robust for less bucks? Most likely not, thought I should ask anyway.

POST 4Original post

Look at FVD or pelican parts quite a bit less - I am doing same job as you - oil in intake - so much easier with taking motor out a total of 10 min to change out - it was 75.00 at Rock auto. Com

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks roadblock. I will probably end up going that route. A lot of items disconnected already.. Never heard of FVD bearings.will check out.
