I was having a sensor replaced due to Porsche Performance Exhaust and since I was having that done, I asked him to throw on the new shifter.....but I wouldn't bring the car to the shop just for a shifter and I would like to just put a new one on myself.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 99 Porsche 996 and I am the second owner --I bought an OEM shifter **** on eBay and when I went to put it on,-it doesn't fit. My shifter **** has a little screw at the side, if this helps. So in order to try to figure out which **** to order,I lifted up the boot and tried to look for what kind of aftermarket shifter may be installed. There was no text anywhere, but the linkage is blue. Can anyone help me out as to what type of shifter **** I can order? Mine is cracked and looks terrible. Thank you so much!!

POST 2Original post

Can you post a picture? B&M and off brand short shifter copied from eBay sound like good candidates.

POST 3Original post

What sort of shift **** is on it currently? Most standard OEM shifters just press on with slight force, tequipment ones have a grub screw at the front to hold it in place. Almost all the aftermarket shifters including the knockoffs fit the OEM gear *****

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone....I've attached a few pics of the linkage....if any of you could tell me what kind of shift **** would work here (please provide brand and size) I would be really grateful--I have not had any luck getting a shifter so far. Thanks so much--I really appreciate your time in helping me here! david

POST 7Original post

Shifter looks like a generic ebay short shifter (B&M replica) What is the red wire for? It looks like it goes into the shifter? Even though its a generic SSK it should still easily fit an OEM ****, maybe post us a pic of the one you're replacing and your new one?

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Feedback is greatly appreciated!!

POST 11Original post

Definitely not an OEM shifter, i'd guess that if the red wire winds its way up the shift **** its interfering with the installation of your new OEM one. What does your new one look like?

POST 12Original post

Shifter and **** are both aftermarket eBay items. The **** is illuminated hence the wires. Possible to post a pic of the top of the shifter with the **** off? Thats the only way to tell what goes back on, but an oem **** should fit.

POST 13Original post

Have you unscrewed the **** and looked at the threading of both side by side?

POST 14Original post

Agreed, it looks like an eBay knockoff of the B&M short shifter. That shift **** looks like it may have a set screw holding it on. The OEM one pulls straight up without a set screw. If you remove the one on there and post a picture, or even better measurements, I’m sure some one can help. I have to wo spare shifters in the garage that I can measure for you to get a comparison.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys! So I tried to pull the shifter off tonight so I could get some pics and I could NOT get it off!! The shifter I bought that didnt fit didn't fit but I only know this because my mechanic told me it didn't. I was having a sensor replaced due to Porsche Performance Exhaust and since I was having that done, I asked him to throw on the new shifter.....but I wouldn't bring the car to the shop just for a shifter and I would like to just put a new one on myself. So I tried to pull it off so I could show you guys, and for the life of me,-it would NOT come off!! I checked to make sure there were no screws holding it, and while there are screw holes--there are no screws in them. So....any advice on getting this damn thing off? I pulled straight up as hard as I could many many many times...it wasn't budging AT ALL! Help me!

POST 16Original post

Took two people to pull my OEM shifter off when i installed my 997 shifter mechanism. I couldn't do it myself. Try with two people and make sure your face isn't over the shifter when you're pulling it off!

POST 17Original post

PULL! Did your mechanic get the **** off? some cars use a set screw, and some require you to twist the lower collar 90 and then lift to remove. Remove your old **** by simply pulling upwards on it

POST 18Original post

If screws are loose (pun intended), try putting in 2nd gear, then twist/pull or staight pull.

POST 19Original post

If it's anything like mine, and many others, it takes A LOT of force. Straddling the front seats (iirc, this worked for me), possibly removing them. I've read of blackened eyes, and even cracked windshields doing this job. GL and be safe!

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I DID IT!!!!!!! Thank you so much guys, I finally got it off!!! I would NOT have been able to do it without your help--there were 2 hidden screws under the number plate. I am posting pictures below and hopefully you will be able to tell me what kind of shifter I can buy. Oh one other question--I REALLY had to pull on this thing to get it off---that won't damage anything or loosen up the play in the shifter will it? Thanks so much everyone!!!

That shiftier mechanism will fit all OEM gear *****, if you want to buy the standard/original one make sure you check the colour of the silver for you '99 its a flat silver. From 02'- it changed to a metallic silver and won't match the other silver highlights in your interior. Check out ebay there are plenty, dont install another aftermarket gear ****, your 99' deserves better...

POST 29Original post

Looks pretty standard. I don’t see why a factory **** won’t work.
