Reported fix
I had already replaced my booster spring but it couldn't hurt to replace that at the same time too. Initially it was my slave on the way out - had it replaced and the pedal problem went away then came back and I had to have the master replaced.

I just had a complete new clutch + flywheel installed when I had the IMS Solution done last week.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I couldnt find anything in the 996 forum regarding this issue after searching...
Upon releasing the clutch pedal, about .5 inch before total release, it kind of pops. I can feel it when I engage the clutch and when I disengage the clutch. Its basicslly a pop feeling at the very top when releasing the pedal.
I just had a complete new clutch + flywheel installed when I had the IMS Solution done last week. It did it before the new clutch and still does it after. It definitely feels like something with the pedal. I dont think its audible but you can definitely feel it. It isnt a smooth depress, as it feels like the last .5 inch kind of pops up.
I brought it up to the mechanic and he felt it and said he believed it was normal but I dont think it is. Ive never owned a vehicle that does that but then again this is my first Porsche.
i hope Im explaining this thoroughly enough that someone can either help or tell me it is indeed normal. It almost feels like a spring is catching or pushing the clutch up at the very end of disengagement.
thanks in advance.
Just a wild guess from the internet, perhaps its the helper spring you feel uncompressing? More on that here:

Thats what the mechanic said - that the first 95% if the return is hydraulic and the very last (the top) is a helper spring. I knew that wasnt a normal feeling, though.
I read online it could also be a couple of little rubber pieces that look to be up top of the pedal assembly.
any idea on a fix? Remove the spring?
This happened to me not too long ago, I can tell you it's more than likely your clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder on the way out.
I had already replaced my booster spring but it couldn't hurt to replace that at the same time too.
Initially it was my slave on the way out - had it replaced and the pedal problem went away then came back and I had to have the master replaced.
Basically the same symptoms push clutch in normally and when you go to release it it gets almost to the end of the travel and pops out. As it gets worse it stops returning all the way.

I spent some time today and removed the spring assist module. The clutch no longer has the catch or pop on its way up and the clutch feels MUCH better now. I can actually feel what the clutch is doing now that the spring has been removed. What a great mod.
thanks to all those who answered!
Your cruise might not work without that spring in place. It takes up the little bit of play at the top of the pedal. If there is too much play the switch can activate so that the cruise control sees brake activation and drops out.
There is a long thread around here “improved my clutch feel dramatically” or something similar that contains a lighter spring hack that solves that issue.
