Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When I say high, I mean, 150,000+ miles high. I'm planning on making a street toy out of a turbo automatic car and the one I'm looking at seems to be in decent condition, but I'm curious to what kind of chassis/suspension/drivetrain wear issues I may come across. How robust are the transmissions? Front diffs? Driveshaft issues? Control arms? I already have an engine build and the associated costs rolling around in my head and I'll probably do shocks/springs but some of these other little things can eat up funds QUICK even though I'll be the one doing the work on it.

One guy on the list is rolling around with 600k miles on his 6TT. I'd think that usual old car worn suspension parts would be the think to look for.

Reading around it seems this is the case. Nothing sticking out that isn't really "ordinary" - I'm surprised at all these cars with 120k+ miles on them that are still dailys or track cars. Didn't even see the turbo section, thank you, Bill!

POST 5Original post

Even though I have a 996TT I still read the 996 section, as there's a lot of similarity between the cars. And this forum gets more traffic.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Seems like the cost difference between a car that's been beat on like a circus animal and one that's fairly nice isn't worth the possible headache. Roughly 15k less going from one with 40-60k miles to one with 100k (or more) and a questionable service history doesn't seem like a good buy. I still need to finish out my Hazet tool box this year so I still have some time to think about it and keep my eye open for the one I want.

Just an observation, the price seemed to hit a low point a few years ago and the prices have been on the incline ever since. 35k cars 3 years ago are now 45k cars. In another year they are liable to be 52-55k.

Good point, I've heard the same from multiple people, and this may push me to jump on one within the next few weeks.

POST 9Original post

Be careful of cheap ones bc they seem to have underlying issues not found until you buy the car and daily drive it.

I've had mine for 6 months. To replace it would cost $8k more than I paid. If you want silver or grey there are tons available. Blue, not so many, I only saw 2 for sale in the 6+ months I looked. The first one sold before I could get it. I got the second one.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Black, Metallic black, or MAYBE Seal grey if the deal was right...

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'll travel for the right car, being in Dallas it's a 2 day trip from either coast if I drive back and I'm a road warrior. Nothing like putting 1500 miles on a vehicle in the first 48 hours you own it to get used to it.

POST 13Original post

I bought mine in Chicago and drove it 1100 miles back to Massachusetts. Other than the less than stellar gas mileage and small gas tank it was a great trip! Like I said, was very hard to find one that wasn't silver or gray.

POST 14Original post

Currently I am getting just at 20.3 measured mpg. My OBC indicates 19.2. This is mostly 30-50 mph back road driving with 4 getting out of town stoplights. On highway trips I get ~26_28 with cruse set at 75. On the track probably ~6.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My Cayenne has 4.10 gears and turns near 3k RPM at our typical highway speeds... 20mpg would be a relief to me. I have an eye on one with excellent service history and around 55k miles at well reviewed dealer, depending on how my next week goes I will either fly in to drive it home or have it shipped, depending on if I can get away from work. If I miss out on it then I'll continue the search, but I will be buying one within 30 days. If I wait 6 months to a year I may not be able to buy.
