Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am returning a car I just bought to stock (it had race seats installed when I got it) and I have the original seats that came on the car when it was new. The seats are 8-way power seats with heat and memory, as indicated on the option sticker. All wiring is present in the seat and on the car. Fuses E3 and E4 are intact. The troublesome part seems to be either the memory module itself or the way I've plugged the connectors in. The previous owner wasn't able to get the seats to move, but I've made a little bit of progress, but am not quite there yet. The seat moves, but not in the right ways... I have plugged the connectors into the unit in a configuration that gets me movement fore/aft, and seat back tilts forward and backward. BUT... not with the correct seat switches. And the seat base doesn't move up and down, either at the front or the rear. The seat has two switches on the side, one a horizontal bar that moves in many different positions (forward and backward, as well as up and down front and rear) and the other more vertical, that pivots forward and backward. My expectation is that the first switch controls the slide forward and back when it is slid forward and back, that the corresponding seat bottom end tilts up or down when the switch is pivoted front or rear, and that the vertical switch tilts the angel of the seatback forward or backward. Instead, I got odd combinations: sliding the horizontal switch backward, the seat slides backward on the track (works as expected) sliding the horizontal switch forward causes the seat back to tip backward (ummm, we have a problem Houston) no change occurs when pivoting the horizontal switch up or down (not good) moving the vertical switch backward causes the seat to slide forward on the track (ok, neat, but that should have tilted the seat back) moving the vertical switch forward tilts the seat back Additional facts that may or may not be relevant: The passenger seat works correctly (all functions) The memory buttons on the sill cause things to move around (but I'm not sure if it is right, since I didn't set them, and they move everything at once when pressed). The mirrors don't adjust with the switch on the door triangle - but they do move when I press 1 or 2 on the memory switches on the sill (mirror presets go through this module as well in the big white plug) - I've tried this with another known good switch and they still don't adjust The connectors (at least some of them) are keyed so they only fit in certain locations (slot/tab keying). But some of them seem to fit in multiple positions. I've moved some around, but I don't seem to be solving anything. At this point, it seems clear that at least some of the motors work - the one moving the seat forward and back on the tracks and the one that moves the seat back. At least some of the switches work, at least some of the time. I've looked on here and googled late into the night. I've pored over wiring diagrams and memory module pin layouts. My harness has HH and HV labeled wires, but the others are missing the label. All three of (what I assume to be the plugs out to the seat motors) have the same wires in them - black, white, red and brown. Here is how I have them plugged in now: Physically, the circuit board (inside the cover) and pins are all in good shape; no signs of burned components, water or other physical damage on either side of the circuit board. I figure I either have connectors in the wrong spot (most likely). Maybe the module is inoperative (unlikely, except for maybe on the mirror switch part). Logically, I think I have to have the HH, HV and LV wires in the right slots (HH and HV are marked, and the third connector of the same type - assuming it is LV - is in the remaining spot). The bundle in connector 5 has a lot of grey wires (GY/RD, GY, GY/GN, GY/BK) which correspond with the wiring diagrams for the backrest angle. I feel like the switch behavior must to be something to do with pin bundle 5, the seat switch inputs. But I have them in the positions indicated by the diagram... Left to right - yellow/natural (absent), blue, then black. From the Bentley manual (EWD-86 Seat Memory page 1 of 3, for 2002) And the height front and height rear could be anything in the circuit (switches, module, motors). Any ideas for me? Do you have a better diagram, or even better, a picture from your car with 8-way seats, of the plugs in the module in a way that they work correctly? If I could neaten up the for aft and seat back angle first, that is my primary goal. Next I'd like to sort out the seat height ones. Last of all, I'll tackle the mirrors. If I can verify that I have the connectors in the right place, I think my next step is to get out the multimeter and test the continuity of the switches. After that, I think I need to get another seat module and try that. Thanks in advance for anything you can do to help.

POST 2Original post

1. Since the passenger seat works correctly, could you check the way the plugs are connected on that one? 2. Is it possible that the other ends of the connectors that go on the seat button controls are wrong? Maybe you have them plugged in the seat module in the correct order, but the other ends are not plugged in correctly? Again, might have to look at the passenger seat connectors and try to duplicate the connections.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, great thinking. Unfortunatley, the passenger seat has a single large plug, and no memory module, so it isn't helpful with verifying the connectors. I'll check the other end of the seat switch cable, but I think the wires are soldered into the other end. Thank you for the ideas.

POST 4Original post

Did you get it right yet? I have a set of those seats from a 2004 TT in the attic of my garage. I wil go up and unwrap them to get pics if you still need them. If you find out that parts of your seat are toast I will sell you anything that you need including the seats. I used the seat bottom plastic, foam and leather covers to repair mine.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

fpb111, I didn't get them working, I haven't had time to try anything else yet. If it isn't too much of a hassle, I'd appreciate it if you could check on the plugs. I have a memory module on the way from eBay, worst case I have a spare.

POST 8Original post

I don't know but maybe this will help http://www.techyv.com/questions/dura...circuit-front/

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I figured it out!! The blue and black switch plugs can be inserted in two different orientations. I switched them (so the latching tabs face rightward in the above orientation) and everything works now. Of course, I imply that this was easy, but it actually took lots of poring over wiring diagrams, removing and disassembling the seat switches, and lots of noodling. In the end it was a simple solution. Hopefully I will be able to reassemble the switch now... Thanks for the advice and support.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

For anyone following along from home, I wanted to post one more update about the electric mirrors. The short version is that the mirrors are now working both with the memory module and the original switch on the door triangle. It was a blown fuse. I wanted to post this because it is so easy and natural for me to jump to conclusions about root case when in the middle of troubleshooting. It's easy to assume the magic electronics box is broken, or a connector is unplugged, or a switch is bad. I spent a lot of time looking at wiring diagrams, and thinking that the memory module still had issues. It wasn't until I forced myself to step back and make sure all of the basics were right and starting systematically from the front of the circuit that I found the popped fuse. Side note for anyone stumbling across this later - the mirrors will move when pressing the memory buttons on the sill even with the fuse (B5) blown or removed (easy to see when you look at the wiring diagrams). Also, the ignition (key) needs to be in the "on" position for the mirror switch to work. Just a reminder to me to keep it simple (KISS) and remember Occam's razor (when contemplating competing hypothetical answers to a problem, select the solution that makes the fewest assumptions).
