I run PIlot sport all season 3+ on the standard size 18s on a C2.

I bought the Pirelli's since they were the quietest of the tires tested, perform very well, and are very affordable.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Always have run PS2s on my 996, in stock 18" sizes. Are there STILL no decent highish performance all season tires for the 996 made? No judgments please, just asking, as PS2s are no good in cold weather even if there is no snow. No room to store or have an extra set of wheels, and never track the car anyway. Nothing shows up on Tirerack.
All seasons are still, "...no good in cold weather even if there is no snow." Once the road surface reaches 7C or 50F, that is the
glass transition temperature (see:
http://chemrules.blogspot.ca/2011/11...read-snow.html
)
for most all season and summer tires. For a 911, I contend there is no point in all season tires. Either Summer high performance or winter high performance, depending on if the road surface is above or below 7C.
I have Michelin AS3+ and stick amazingly well at -10F on very cold, dry roads. I also did some track days and was within 1% of another guy running PSS4s. So there you go, AS3+ are quite simply...amazing.
I've had the as3 and the dws, and for an all seasons, they were decent. Not great in the snow, but you'll likely be faster than other traffic anyways. They're terrible in deep snow, and without an LSD you're going to have a hard time starting uphill. They both have pretty squishy sidewalls and feel terrible for actual performance driving, and both get overheated very easily. Any decently fresh summer tire is fine below freezing, just be careful the first mile or two. PS2s are awful especially when they're old, which most are at this point.
If you're going to do events and want to drive aggressively and push your limits, get summer tires/winter tires. If you want to fart around with traffic, cruise, and not be bothered swapping sets then get all seasons.
My point exactly, hence my "don't judge" comment. In Richmond, VA, I only drive my truck when it snows the usual inch or 2...for the whole year. But days & nights in the teens are not uncommon, and even recent PS2s, (though mine are 6 years old now) are dangerous in those temps, for exactly the reasons you listed in the first post. I well understand the performance difference and limits of different tires and types. Because of work proximity and alternate transportation, I only put on maybe 3k a year, all in the warm months on the 996. Better to drive it more, in all weather, than only in the warm months. I've already owned it for more than 10 years, and only have put on 27k miles on it.
The original AS2s and 3s were terrible once they had more than 15k miles on them. Had them on my Mini. I have also heard very good things for the 3+. Haven't found the AS3+ listed as available in 285/30-18, the problem size.
Thank you for the suggestions.
235/40 18 and 275/35 18 Continental DWS06 are the best you'll do for reasonable winter traction without buying snow tires. OD's are OK for the car.

My point is that all season tires don't provide the grip of winter tires in temperatures below 50 degrees even on bare roads. If you drive in those temps, you are better off with winter compounds than either summer or all season tires. The term "all season" is more of a marketing term than a maxim.
I have Michelin P/S A/S 3+ on mine. 285/35s on the rear work fine for me. Fronts are standard size. I have 15mm spacers on and get a small amount of rub on the driver's side rear once in a blue moon. For the price, durability and ride quality though, it's the best tire I've found.
I am running Conti DW tires on mine. They are summer tires. I drive the car on dry days in winter but not too hard, just to exercise the motor and the running gear. I am from Canada and even here in New Jersey I see tha advantages of true snow tires so my DD (a Chevy SS with rear drive) has snows for the winter. I wanted DWS06 for the 911 but when I needed a set they did not have my size yet for the rear.
So basically I would have to go with a 275/35 to have close to the same RPM as the 225/40's in the front, 814 & 829, vs 840 & 829 with the correct size PS2s. 285/35 appear too large (only 804 RPM), which the AS3+ ( & DWS) comes in. I have 7mm FVD spacers on my wheels, and am lowered a bit with PSS9s, so I would avoid too large. The 275/35 are 0.8" taller, whereas the 285/35 are 1.1" taller. Some things to consider, thanks, all.
I just had Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus tires put on my 99 996. They are available in 225/40 and 265/35 for 18 inch wheels. Tire rack did a test of these and a few other all season performance tires. I bought the Pirelli's since they were the quietest of the tires tested, perform very well, and are very affordable.
Yokohamas.....I don't use the car in snow nor track.....price is right and they are.very quiet right up to full wear....seems like every other tire I used would whine within a couple thousand miles of use
I have blizzaks on my car this winter. They are great in the cold, and decent in snow, but the car can still scare me in slush and half plowed and salted crap. Mine also has no PSM and is a C2
I run PIlot sport all season 3+ on the standard size 18s on a C2. I live in CT. I drive it as long as there isnt snow on the road. I have also run them during a DE day. I dont have much to compare them too but they are pretty solid.
Hold on a second right there, mister. I have the P/S A/S 3+ right now on my C2 & the rears are slightly out of spec (285/35 instead of 285/30 - slightly larger overall diameter). It's fine for me but if they make a 285/30 I'd like to know
. So, are you sure the rears are in spec? OP has a lowered suspension so he doesn't want to rub with the larger diameter 285/35 rears. If the 30s exist, his problem might be solved (mine too).
So I can't physically look at the tire right now as its parked at a garage around the corner from my house but I ordered from tire rack a year or so ago and when I look at their website the options they give for the car on 18' is
225/40 front and 265/35 in the rear.. so I must have those specs I imagine. I just looked at photos and the vehicle capacity/weight sticker with the tire diameter lists 225/40 ZR18 front 265/35 ZR18 rear so I don't know where 285/30 is coming from.... I haven't had any issues running those sizes and I think those are OEM spec...
I run dws06 on mine. I know on those, when racing on the back roads at 100mph I'm losing to you guys with the summer tires, but that's OK
Anyway. Weird thought. Just use summer tires all year and the truck for the snow.
