The tech checked all the wiring in the car and fixed any issues with the wiring.

Anyway to get them removed from the list of shops that are recommended by PCA do you think?

I hate to say it, but I would recommend driving the car to your nearest Porsche service center and ask them if there is a simple reset ....

Mine behaves like normal it would seem, except I don't have a frunk bulb (burned out, bulb removed and not yet replaced).

Thanks sjg, a Porsche Indy shop who is run by a guy who worked for Porsche for 15 years told me otherwise, but like I said, if the stereo shop can't see any wiring issues with the stereo, then the stealership will be my last resort.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ok everyone, I know your sick of hearing about my stereo/electrical issues. I am taking it to a stereo shop tomorrow and want to know what to tell them. So if you can answer some questions for me I would greatly appreciate it.
1. Will your brake lights come on if you get in the car and step on the brake without the key in the ignition or turned on?
2. Will your frunk light come on without the key in the on position?
3. Will your interior lights come on without the key in the on position?
4. Will the engine lid light come on without the key in the on position?
Thanks in advance everyone. I think I am narrowing down the issue.
**for those interested, Transport Mode will not let the car go over 10 mph.**
"No" to number one. In my 996 and my 997, the brake lights would not illuminate if I stepped on the brake pedal without the key in the ignition and turned on. I haven't tried it in my 991.
"Yes" to the other questions.
How do you get your car into transport mode?
Mine behaves like normal it would seem, except I don't have a frunk bulb (burned out, bulb removed and not yet replaced).
Is your car in transport mode? If so, think of the logic behind transport mode. It would disable some of the normal functions of the car, such as lights coming on when doors/hood/engine lid are open to preserve power if during transport one of those were ajar. As far as I know, only a dealer can get your car out of transport mode.
Please elaborate. I am having my stereo fixed so wouldn't a stereo shop make sense? I asked about the lighting because I am pretty sure whoever did the stereo in the car originally, messed up some of the wiring....
No, the car is not in transport mode. I drive it regularly. As mentioned above, if it was, it wouldn't go faster than 10mph. Also, transport mode came in later year vehicles, not the 996.
IMHO, you're working from the wrong end of the problem. Apparently, the car needs to have the main control unit cleared and reset and I'm afraid only a certified shop with a Porsche Diagnostic system can clear your car of the current electrical gremlins. I think you know the problem with your stereo. We've all chimed in about the HU needing switched and constant 12V to operate properly and retain all the memory functions, but you car has a more serious issue that only a certified Porsche shop can solve. I hate to say it, but I would recommend driving the car to your nearest Porsche service center and ask them if there is a simple reset .... you'd be surprised that in many cases they'll help for little out of pocket. The last time I went to Porsche in Atlanta, they helped me at no charge. Yep, I was very appreciative. But be ready for a fee to connect your car to the PST2 (I think that's the current system) and have your car reset.
Hope you find a solution for your nice red Cabriolet!
Thanks b3freak. I figured since I have to get the stereo wiring cleaned up, I might as well have them look for something while they are in there. If this doesn't fix the lighting/electrical issue, then a Porsche shop will be my next stop.
It sounds a lot like your car is still in Transport mode. My '99 cab was still in transport mode and it definitely Would go over 10mph. The dealer was the only one that was able to fix it and even then, it was not obvious, with the dealer computer connected to my 996, how to take it out of transport mode. I had to stand over the mechanic at the dealer and help him walk through the menu system until we found an option that put it in the correct mode. The main symptom I noticed was that the dome light would not come on when the door was opened.

Word to the wise hawk. Take it to your nearest Porsche service center and explain that you "think" it was left in transport mode and wondered if they'd be "so kind" to help you switch it back. maybe... and ONLY maybe, that may save you a little $$. Remember, you can catch MORE flies with honey, than you can vinegar.
+1 on the dealership, you've already been told incorrect information by other parties regarding transport mode IMO time for a trip to someone who knows what they are doing.
You need to be careful with these cars they are very specific and misinformation or lack of information can be costly.
Got the car back and stereo is fixed, LEDs are removed (and their wiring) except for the ones I left in the exterior mirror housing and the interior footwells. The tech checked all the wiring in the car and fixed any issues with the wiring. Interior lights still don't come on so definitely transport mode I guess. I am surprised but what the Porsche shop told me about Transport mode. They said it only could be initiated on the newer cars and couldn't drive more than 10 mph. Apparently they have lost all credibility with me. Anyway to get them removed from the list of shops that are recommended by PCA do you think? Lol. Off to the dealer next.
Sorry to resurrect an old thread. I have someone interested in buying my car, but he is scared that the interior lights, engine light, and trunk light dont turn on without the key in the ignition. So I called the stealership and they told me they need the car for an entire day, $180.00 diagnostic fee, and they are booked a week out. So I will swing by Trophy Performance (Indy) tomorrow to see if they can do what the sttached posts state:
If I get time tonight ill go through my PIWIS II in simulation mode to see if I can find exactly where the settings for it are.
I find that if you go to the dealership with the right info you always get a better outcome, happened to me with enabling the CD changer and its why I bought my own PIWIS II
Could you please share the two links in DBJoe996's post? - never mind I found it, realised I was the last to post in that thread and I actually forgot to look it up! Wops sorry!
awesome man! Any help will be great. I mentioned to Keith at the dealership I had found a bunch of information about things we could try and he laughed at the remark and said it needs a diag. I hate the dealership.
For anything electrical, so do I... They couldn't enable my CD changer, I had it done in around 5 minutes including the time it took to boot up my PIWIS... Was the same software version they were using as well, they were just looking in the wrong place.
Okay so spent a bit of time going through each module, nothing under DME or Alarm that indicates "transport mode" or "energy saving mode". However I did find "Vehicle handover" under the additional menu:
Note the "Alarm system was activated" if I had to make an educated guess i'd say this takes the car out of "transport mode"
