Suggestion

I would have the car inspected and focus on the things that show signs of wear and replace those along with the upgrades you want.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's time for new points, plugs and condenser I've been a new owner for just over a month now. I've been doing all of the cosmetic, audio, and BS stuff to my new to me be Black 996 Cabriolet mine. As I said in my original Newbie posting, I'm a "waxer" and not a "racer". That being said, I know I must perform the maintenance on the car as well. A couple of preventative maintenance items I have scheduled are: 1st Level IMS Bearing AOS Rear Main Seal 2nd Level Starter Y-cable Clutch Alternator Full fluid change 3rd Level H&R Shocks Bilstein B8 Shocks Eibach Sway Bars and Drop Links TRW Tie-rods Bushings As I'm arranging Levels 1, 2 & 3 I would like to coordinate a tune up. I saw a tune-up package here that had coil packs, spark plugs, oil change stuff and a couple of other items. Do you guys have any recommendations for a basic tune-up that I will do. Eventually, I will make it to the dyno but until then... 911STYL

POST 2Original post

How's the cooling system? Replacement of the waterpump, thermostat, and various hoses (if not all of them) is prudent on these cars as preventive maintenance. I just did the low hanging engine bay and transmission tunnel hoses that showed wear, others looked fine but my car was 20K original miles at the time. Also how are your engine mounts? If they are older than a couple years old they are probably perished. The transmission mount (one at the front of the transmission) can either be reinforced w/ an insert or pressed out and replaced. There is a special tool to press it out with the transmission in the car. I did an insert b/c I had not learned about this tool yet. If you are going to do the AOS definitely do the Y-cable at the same time as you have everything out with access to the area. Additionally the coolant tank often cracks on these cars and it's easy to remove while you have everything out for the AOS as well (and doing the coolant system stuff at the same time).

OH Yeah - transmission and motor mounts are included when I do all of the suspension stuff. Will look at doing the cooling system as well. - thanks

POST 4Original post

If you want to borescope top and bottom of cylinders and get leakdown test if engine out and getting the "3 S's" (AOS, IMS, RMS) done...add ~2.5 hours of labor

POST 5Original post

When you do your level 1 might as well do the clutch - save on labor. No points or condensers, just coils. If coils are original might as well do this when you do the plugs.

POST 6Original post

I would have the car inspected and focus on the things that show signs of wear and replace those along with the upgrades you want. All of that is about half the value of the car if someone else is doing the work. It might make sense if you were doing it all yourself and just enjoy working on the car as a hobby.
