Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The previous owner must have had been having issues with their latch at some point and installed their own emergency release cable.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

uninstalled the left signal light housing to replace a bulb and found this wire/cable just there. Traced it back to the mechanical latch of the rear trunk. I guessed its function is to unlatch the trunk (if there is no power). But the only way to get access to this wire is to open the trunk, and uninstall the signal light housing.
Am I missing something?
That cable should be accessible just under the left rear taillight, in-between the bottom edge of the light and the top edge of the bumper. Pray to god that you never have to use it, because it means youre probably having a miserable day due to other issues with the car. Been there, done that.
It's one of those things that "you don't know unless you know...". As IslaTurbine points out it is accessible if you know it's there. Just hope you never have to use it...
That's the factory emergency release. Yes it makes no sense you have to get the taillight out first, which requires the decklid to be open. Many people duct tape it down just inside the gap between the taillight and the bumper so that if you ever needed it you could hook it with a coat hanger.
I recently had my rear bumper cover off on my '99. I'm not sure if mine is as it left the factory or not. It is only a few inches from the end of the bumper cover at the drivers rear wheel. Just remove one or two screws for the bumper cover in the wheel well. Then move the cover outward slightly. You can reach it with a 6" hook.
