Hello Adam: I installed a lift in my garage last year.

Yes, I'd look into raising garage doors and using side mount openers.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all. I'm considering a lift and am working with/around a beam in the center of my garage that runs side to side. I'm trying to see if I'll be able to get the car positioned such that the beam would be somewhere at or before the windshield. But alas, my car is not with me at the moment.
Can someone please tell me the distance from the front of the windshield to the front and rear bumpers? (as well as the top of the windshield to both bumpers?)
TIA,
Adam
Hey Adam, here's what I got on my 2003 C2 coupe. Keep in mind, I had to do my best estimation with a cloth tape holding it in a straight line over the contours and looking down. I considered you may bang your car on something so my plan starting out was to err high.
Bottom of windshield to nose of car: 55" -
Matches Tex, whew.
Top of windshield to tail of car: 100"
Windshield top to windshield bottom: 24"
Wikipedia says the length of a C2 is 174.5" - and my numbers add up to 179", so obviously I got it kind of wrong. The windshield may be more like 22-23" and the back end may be something more like 98-99", it was really hard for me to see precisely.
Hope this helps you, somewhat, even though I was wrong.
808, no I knew the contours of the car would mess up my measurements so I was holding it in a straight line over the car. My trusty assistant was asleep so I was using... painters tape to hold it.
The measuring tape was the cloth type that seamstresses use.
I brought up in the beginning that I knew Adam was trying to fit his car under a lift in a tight space so if I thought I was seeing 98" I bumped it up to 100" to be safe rather than sorry, vicariously for Adam.
Interesting, a double lift. I like the idea of no posts in the middle of the garage, but I don't like that you have to move all bottom cars to access a car on the lift. Pros and cons.
But my biggest issue is ceiling height. It varies from front to rear with a beam in the middle (and a pole too). So I'm wondering if I can put the porsche on the lift facing backwards so the highest part of the car tucks into the highest part of the ceiling. Not sure that will work for the GTO. Here's a crude pic of the ceiling in the middle (side) of the garage. Note on one side of the beam the height is about 9.5' and the other side it's about 10.5'. I think the beam is about 9' 2" but I need to double check.
This video may help a bit as well. I'm buying this place so I have limited access right now:
You Tube
Here's a front shot of the condo. Note the roof on the front half of the garage. I'm wondering if it pays to cathedral the ceiling on the front half of the garage (under the roof, in front of the windows) so that the garage doors can go up higher into the ceiling). But the low point will still be the beam. I need to double check it, but I think it's around 9' 2". Both cars I'm looking to put on/under the lift are about 54" tall.
Having to get two cars out to lower the lift isn't ideal, but doesn't add too much time/effort. Ceiling height was my challenge, too. I was lucky, in that I had a 9' ceiling, with 'attic' space above that let me raise the ceiling 3' without modifying the roof. Having a 12' ceiling provides enough room for me to pull an F-150 under the lift. It also provides a comfortable height when walking under the lift. I don't know if you have looked into it, and not sure if you would have room, but I also installed a wall mount garage door opener and a 'high lift' door track kit. These 'saved' some ceiling height.
Yes, I'd look into raising garage doors and using side mount openers. It's that beam that's gonna kill me.
1964 GTO. I also have a lifted, set up Rubicon. Plus a daily driver. Hence the need for more space

I was at my storage garage to take the 996 for a ride on a nice winter day. I measured the lines on the car to see how they would fit into my ceiling lines.
Now take these with a grain of salt since I had my 17YO son helping, but from rear to top of the windshield it's about 96-97" Since I wanted to know how talk the car is at 106" from the rear, we estimated that to bring us to about mid way down the glass, making the height there at about 41" (My roof height is only 51"). This is all good news.
Here's as profile sketch of my shabby wacky ceiling.
Thanks! Viper Blue. It really is a head turner at car shows. Even die hard muscle car guys pick it out and come over to compliment on the car. I think in part because this is a modern color so you don't see it much in the 40-50 year old car shows.
^^ Judging by your measurements it certainly looks doable^^ The GTO is awesome - Some engine photo's please!!!
I thought I might catch you at the "Snowflake Rally" yesterday...Oh well maybe next year
That's sweet!!! No rain for the 996?
Poor Car!!! At least with the rain, most of the salt was washed off the roads...
There were some beauties there - several 993's, 1 - GT3 (guards red) and several turbos (cabs and coupes)! Super fun day - extra fun for my partner and I as we won the "touring class"
The winners of the "expert class" were driving a Mitsubishi Galant
