Since the exhaust cam pulls the intake along for the ride, and since the intake cam is at a set distance from the exhaust cam (and the intake is non-adjustable), you merely set the exhaust cam as per the "tool" and trust that Porsche knew what they were doing.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Getting ready to go thru/refresh a 2000 3.4 that I'm using in my trackday car. I'm trying to find the info to setup the cam timing. Does anyone know a source? Thank you. cj

POST 2Original post

Special tool (not sure of part # off hand - google M96 3.4l cam timing tool).Lock the crankshaft at TDC for the bank being timed (180 degrees apart depending on bank 1 or bank 2). Line up the marks on the cam chain sprockets (I think it's 8 links apart on the chains). Loosen the bolts on the exhaust sprocket, align the tool tighten up the exhaust sprocket bolts... I think that's the overall gist of it. There's plenty of info on the web. I also recommend the Bentley M96 Service manual https://www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts...ad=47433965052 - you can probably get away without it, but it's really nice to have it handy when you run into something questionable, including torque specs (although I would recommend the Knowledge Gruppe M96 Torque guide as well - more up to date than Bentley) http://www.theknowledgegruppe.com/in...96-automobile/

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I get it now. Since the exhaust cam pulls the intake along for the ride, and since the intake cam is at a set distance from the exhaust cam (and the intake is non-adjustable), you merely set the exhaust cam as per the "tool" and trust that Porsche knew what they were doing. So, it looks as though there is no need to degree the cams in by open/close or centerline degree wheel method. I had wondered how you'd be able to check the intake (thru it's variable range)... I see now that we are to trust that Porsche had this handled... a pretty safe bet, I think. Thanks! cj
