The cheaper are rubber/elastomer filled, exactly like the engine mounts used prior to 1989 and very similar to what people are selling here as RS (URO has a horrible trainwreck of a rightfully deserved reputation) with a slight change in durometer.

I know the aftermarket division makes both rubber filled and hydraulic with the cheaper version being rubber filled, like Porsche mounts sold before 1989.

Suggestion
There's an urgency and "tightness" to the car that seems new, but it's difficult to say if this behavior is due to the mounts or other changes I made to the car at the same time.

Suggestion
I've been really happy with the Wevo mounts , I decided to go with these semi solids as oem style hydrostatic mounts will not last as long ( why replace a known failure item with one just like it?) and I like the feel of the car in the corners better, I almost went with the rss mounts but the wevos were in stock locally

I've replaced my original Porsche mounts with Rein branded ones and the two parts are identical except that one comes with the Porsche part number & Brand decal.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I usually err to the side of genuine parts. However given the price variation between Porsche and aftermarket I am looking for some feedback.
Those that have replaced with aftermarket, how are they holding up?
I used sport aftermarket mounts, a bit firmer than stock but not race stiffness. I had to reattach my passenger door card to eliminate the buzz. When the throttle is down the cabin comes alive. Some would not like that but I think it suits the car.
I have a 997 C2 but I assume the mounts are very similar if not same. Went with semi-solids last year. Liked it at first but it started to get tiring on longer drives. Kind of disrupted the balance of where the engine feedback is coming from - instead of intake/exhaust, it was more of spine/rear-view mirror. After a few months went back to stock mounts and couldn't be happier - it's back to a beautifully refined machine. So I say NVH is one area you don't want to mess with unless you know exactly what you are doing.
Thanks for the comments so far!
I am looking to stay with OE style, no desire for performance change or change to NVH...
This ECS "kit"

is what I am contemplating.
Hey guys, we are a new vendor here, but a longtime member for our personal use!
We can not compete with Amazon on the Rein mounts, but we do offer the genuine Porsche mounts and if you're looking to upgrade to the Porsche RS style mounts we carry those as well. One thing we do have over Amazon is we can sell outside of NC tax free
and offer a free t-shirt

I've got 6k Miles on my Rein Brand after market engine mounts and so far so good. Plus the price from Amazon is really good, $62.49 Each or $124.98 pair with free shipping.

I went for the stock mounts on an 11 yo 996. Car had about 55k miles when they were swapped out. Noticed slightly tighter feel during shifting and it eliminated the shake I was having in the passenger seat at highway speed. Could have sworn it was from cold or imbalanced tire, but the mounts stopped the harmonic vibration.
Thank you all for the input.
I started out with thinking I would buy genuine, then Rein, then thought hard about WEVO.. Ended up going with Rein's linked here sold by Amazon. We have a bunch of monthly household items on auto subscribe through amazon, had enough points to cover the cost. The mounts are pretty easy to access and swap. Figured if I am going to try an aftermarket part on the car this is about as ideal as it gets.
Appreciate the insight, I will follow back up once I have a few thousand miles one them.
I got the rein from amazon for about $136 a pair shipped. I have the found the part number on rockauto.com and then searched on amazon for them. Just like my original Porsche mounts that had both collapsed.
For what its worth, I went with genuine. Figured these are only going to need to be replaced once while I own the car so I might as well spend the extra $. I put together a video documenting the replacement :
https://youtu.be/nDndZpfchbk
A couple tips that will save you some headache:
1. Get the corresponding nuts that go with the mounts (the big 18mm ones on the bottom). They're like $2 each and you only need 2. Mine were rusty, and as you'll see in the video one of them didn't even come off.
2. Spray the nuts with some oil prior to trying to break them loose. I twisted a 3/8" extension trying to break them loose initially.
Cheers
Charlie
I went with Rein a couple of years ago and have no complaints. I heard somewhere that Rein is the OEM provider for Porsche, but I cannot find a confirmation. They appear identical.
Unless you are tracking the car actively, there is absolutely no need for semi solids or similar. I had RSS mounts in for a while and couldn't wait to get them out and put the OEM ones in. Why put up with all the vibrations and additional noise when there is no reason. You forget with those semi solids what a great comfortable car you had.
I ordered Torque Solutions Semi Solids, and waiting for delivery. Comfort is relative to each individual's preference. I have always preferred a very firm and crisp ride, with very flat cornering. I ran full track setup on my old 993, and loved it. Currently have Pss9s, set quite stiff, and considering firmer springs as I find I would like closer to a track setup on this car also. I loved semi solids on past 911s, and am certain I will prefer them on my current 996.
Amazing how much better my car shifted after replacing mounts. Went with Reins, indistinguishable from OEM.
Take a look at how much this swap pulls up the exhaust tips to the body. I suspect every single 996 needs this update if not already done.
Those are some saggy mounts!
For those wanting a stiffer mount without breaking the bank we now offer our RS mount kit with "URO" brand mounts. Our kit includes two mounts and all new Genuine Porsche hardware. In stock and ready for shipment.

This is what I see across various websites too, that Rein is the Original Equipment part manufacturer for the engine mount. I've replaced my original Porsche mounts with Rein branded ones and the two parts are identical except that one comes with the Porsche part number & Brand decal. Oh and the royalties of the Porsche tax. The other the Rein part comes at a nice affordable price and performs the same.
The best deal so far on these is on amazon, I'm sure the Amazon seller is stoked that word is getting out about his steal of a deal.
Are you sure those Rein mounts are hydraulic? I know the aftermarket division makes both rubber filled and hydraulic with the cheaper version being rubber filled, like Porsche mounts sold before 1989.
JasonAndreas, I actually never got around to taking the new Rein engine mounts apart to confirm. But come replacement time a few years down the road it would be a nice fun thing to do, but for now perhaps another Rennlister that has used the Rein part and is replacing a set can do that for us and let us all know. Specially if the aftermarket realm has a lot of these supposed cheaper alternatives to the proprietary Porsche Brand fluid filled mounts.
From what I understand is that Rein is a distributor that purchases parts from Original equipment manufacture like Corteco or any of their subcontracted subsidiary. They then repackage the product due to Porsche proprietary controls. You do know that Porsche is not in the parts manufacturing business but contracts other manufactures to make parts for them and then the manufacture of those parts adds the Porsche label & Part number on the end product, in most cases it's the same part minus the Porsche label.
Corteco (the aftermarket division of Freudenberg which is the OE producer for the Porsche 964/993/996 mounts) sells two different styles of engine mounts for the 993 and 996 (REIN is just a North American based importer/distributor, not unlike Worldpac) . The cheaper are rubber/elastomer filled, exactly like the engine mounts used prior to 1989 and very similar to what people are selling here as RS (URO has a horrible trainwreck of a rightfully deserved reputation) with a slight change in durometer. In the past some places (Pelican Parts, etc.) have marketed them as 993C4 mounts. I was just trying to point out that they are not at all the same as repackaged and relabeled Porsche mounts. They will definitely be better than a set of mounts that have leaked out but not close to the original style hydraulic mounts.
I installed Rein brand box mounts yesterday. Compared them to the old, and they are identical, down to the same casting flash on the Al housing. I can't see inside, but they work perfect.
Finally got a chance to drive the care with the Wevo semi-solid mounts. So far I don't notice any significant increase in NVH from the engine. There's an urgency and "tightness" to the car that seems new, but it's difficult to say if this behavior is due to the mounts or other changes I made to the car at the same time.
I know that the tell-tale sign of worn mounts is sagging exhaust tips, but how far do they sag? Or, asked a different way, where should the tips sit when the mounts are new?
Mine are uneven, despite brand new mounts. My left side had a 1.5" gap and right was 1" BEFORE replacing them. Afterwards the right side was 3/4" and I don't have a measurement from the left side.
At the top of the long bolt shank there is a square shoulder. This square shoulder rides inside of a square cut out in that large rear crossbeam. If the square shoulder isn't seated in the cut out, you can tighten the mount but it will still be dropped down as you note. Get a jack on the oil pan with a block of wood to distribute the load, back off the big nut, and use a flashlight to shine up in the shank area. See if you can verify that the square shoulder has seated inside the crossbeam fully. Only takes a short time with an 18mm deep socket and ext. Note; support the car on stands before jacking on the oil pan wood insert to hold the engine up.
Are there any other signs?
My exhaust tips seem fine but my passenger seat occasionally vibrates and my previous owner documentation notes that one engine mount was torn but doesn't mention a replacement. That was quite a few years ago so not sure if it was replaced under their ownership.
I'm assuming that if it was left this long I would have noticed it possibly leaking fluid?
Quite unsure of what to go with, fair bit of positive feedback on the wevo as well as the rss.
We have sold several sets of the URO's with good luck. On some 997's longer bolts are required, which we are able to supply at no extra cost. From comparing the genuine to the URO, we can not tell a difference other then the part number stamped on the genuine units (and the price!).
Just performed the swap to RSS mounts yesterday. My old OEM mounts were actually bent a little bit and had began to sag, too. The RSS's are a huge step up in performance, smooth shifting and comfort, surprisingly. I personally want my car to feel raw, so the NVH is a big plus. RSS had amazing customer service and helped me pay less than the few Canadian suppliers that are selling them.
Protip: If you buy RSS mounts, make sure you have lifted the engine up enough to get the mount sitting flush inside the square cutout, or the center will spin and you will have to do some adjustments to get it to line up with the bolts and cutout again.
Thanks for the kind words twitchett, glad your happy with the RSS #624 Performance Engine Mounts!

I haven't noticed any significant nvh issues

RSS mounts installed in January, car feels really good compared to older one's for sure. It did bring out some noise vibrations around 3k RPM, not unbearable but I need to hunt them down and handle that...
Checkup here... few months & >1,000 miles on new Rein mounts. No complaints & either I'm getting better at shifting or the new mounts give a little better feel for when a gear isn't completely engaged. Haven't had a failed shift since. It's easy to feel when it's 2/3rds the way engaged, so you can prevent the dreaded rejected gear.
$125 & 30minutes = no reason to delay this easy DIY update.
^^ Just read that nice little write-up in the link above but he stated 25 ft lbs for the little mount nuts - is that right..? That sounds a bit high. I've heard of a few people who have twisted those little nuts right off.
Do you guys sell the Genuine Porsche hardware kit on its own without the mounts? Through a peculiarly timed Amazon purchase I ended up with the URO mounts but now need the hardware for them to go into a 997 C2. Cheers.
