Another issue is the color combo and options I want.
Leading evidence: 'color combo and options i want' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'color combo and options i want' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace (color, suspension, lsd, exhaust, weight, body mods, etc.)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. They used a ceramic material that was meant for the street and was only rated for 30k miles.

Cant agree, I actually stopped looking at 911's with the 3.4 once I test drove a C4S with a 3.6.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After much debate i've decided to pick up a 996. The issue i'm having is I don't know what to start with as a base. The car will be used daily with the occasional track day. Aesthetics are a huge concern. From reviews I keep hearing that the 3.4 gives a purer driving experience, so I want to go after that, but the car is going to end up with .2 gt3 aero. Another issue is the color combo and options I want. LSD, white exterior, and red interior are big requirements.
So how would you go about this? Don't want to get into the 3.4 vs 3.6 debate, but should I give up the .1 choice to get the newer car and swap in the interior that I want?
FYI, any stock LSD is going to be shot. They used a ceramic material that was meant for the street and was only rated for 30k miles. So plan on buying one with a recent upgrade or just having one installed.
You can't got wrong with either. For the track, I like the '99. It's the lightest and most nimblest. For looks, I like the C4S. I suspect if white/red is a requirement that you may not be able to be real picky about year and model.
Having a white/red requirement may limit choices - whereas I may consider looking for a car with a red interior (again, rare) and wrapping it....
Having a street car with the occasional track use will set you in a different direction than a track car with occasional street use.
My 2003 C2 w/ the 3.6 pulls like a freight train from 4-6K RPMs. I have driven a buddy's '99 C4 and it does not, not sure if that's b/c of the C4 pushing all 4 wheels and extra weight or the 3.4L.
Also the 3.6 has some improvements...no plastic spark plug tubes and improved (simpler) timing chain setup, among other things.
Has anyone seen a white 996 with red interior? I've only seen silver/red (like mine).
If you're going to DD it with some track use, I'd say condition should be at the top of your priority list instead of color. For the 3.4 vs 3.6 choice, you've just got to drive a few and see which you prefer.
I've owned both a 3.4. and 3.6 ('99 C2 and '02 C4S). I would agree that the pre-facelift models just feel more "air cooled" than the facelift models. Why, I can't explain, it was just a feeling the car gave me.
Having said that, I think the facelift models are better looking, especially with the aero package.
If I were in your shoes, I would figure out which of the things on your list is most important (engine size, exterior color, or interior color) and get the first car that you feel is a good car. I'd focus on exterior color, because most white cars are going to have a black interior, but if you plan to use it for some track days you're going to want to get some aftermarket seats, which will be easy to get in red. Then you can have an upholstery shop do some custom work to tie the red seats into the rest of the interior.
One piece of advice from an mk2 c2 owner... don't underestimate the overall impact of incremental improvements towards the driving experience. I started with a plain jane c2 and have redone my car into one that hits the notes I like.
More important than whether you pick up an mk1 or mk2 is what you do to it. Opening up the intake side with a plenum & resonator delete makes a difference. Going with an aftermarket exhaust (I like Fister, but many options exist) helps open up the raspy flat6-ness. Installing 200cell cats - if you can find a set that doesn't mess with the ECU - adds yet another layer of wonderful sounds. I'm about to install some stainless steel headers that I hope will improve sound a bit. Suspension tweaks can have a big impact on the enjoyment factor as well. My c2 places better & corner entry is truly fun after installing beefier sways & tarret drop links. I've also shopped around to redo the interior & open up the footwell with the console delete & aftermarket pedals & lloyd mats. All told, my car is very different from when I first got it. Much more character through the rev range, less oversteer, a wider stance and an interior design that fits my eye.
You've picked a great platform to modify as the cars are cheap & tuning options (OEM, near-OEM & independent) are plentiful.
Nobody has mentioned it here, but if you want a fun car on track or more a "driver's experience car", you should be looking for a 2002 C2 with no PSM. I'm not sure if 03's or 04's could come without it as I think it's standard on those, but it was an option in 02. All the rest of the stuff you can change (color, suspension, LSD, exhaust, weight, body mods, etc.). But if you're stuck with PSM, you can't completely get around it.
Just for info, my 04 also does not have PSM. Not experienced enough to push it in the corners but from reading many other posts it seams that the experienced drivers enjoy having complete control of the car.
any c2 is going to be a great project
i prefer my current car a facelift version .2004
stiffer chassis , improved gearbox are nice to have . If you want to put an lsd in one it goes right in . No grinding the box numb .
A few better interior tweaks
the motor has more top end than the 3.4 . The 3.4 is revvy and fun but runs out of breath at the high end .
Both are excellent but have their own characters .
Cant go wrong , drive both , buy on condition .
improving the suspension and brakes will give you better payback in performance terms than intakes chips and exhausts ( you can spend 7 grand and get 8 hp for it , bolt ons don't offer much improvement on these motors, youwant hp you need to build a new motor)
Sub-zero that is a twin to what i'm wanting to build, except for the mk2 aero. seems to be a very hard combo to find. Thanks for all of your inputs guys!
I must admit to seeking out black leather interiors , probably not what you want in Nevada but they age very well and most scuffs can be fixed with a little boot polish
