I dunno, is this normal, that when adjusted correctly it's just heavy?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
My car has 137k kms / 85k miles and i recently adjusted my parking brake.
However getting to the 4th click requires a lot of arm/bodyweight force, but it does lock the car in place.
The issue is i nearly need 2 arms to get it to the 4th click to "lock" the car in place ( we have a hilly driveway ), and the wife can't do it at all.
(previously before adjustment activating the hand brake was easy, but it didn't do anything on hills, i could pretty much ratchet it all the way -5-7 clicks and it still wouldn't really lock)
Do you think i need to replace the parking shoes?

You may need to do some adjusting of either the brake shoes or parking brake handle, or both. On a hilly driveway or street, I would never completely trust the parking brake to hold, so I would also leave the car in first or reverse, depending on the slope.
yeah i did the instructions previously, so it does hold pretty well, but its just heavy to pull.
It's more for hill stop/starts, abit hard for the wife since it's so heavy to pull.
I dunno, is this normal, that when adjusted correctly it's just heavy?
You might think about getting some lube on the hand brake handle pivot point and while you are at it, shoot some lube down the cables. Could be one (or both) of the cables are binding. I highly doubt it is the brake shoes since all they really do is expand to hold the brake drum...no real wear in doing that. See diagram here

Sounds like the parking brake isn't working for you until the cable is near the end of its travel. So I think your initial instincts are right, that new parking brake shoes will make the brake engage sooner, meaning you don't have to pull it so hard. I also don't know how you did your adjusting. I just did this last summer, and I believe that you are supposed to back off three clicks once the brake is engaged with the wheel. With your parking brake, you may want to back off fewer clicks, as long as you're absolutely positive the brake isn't engaging at all. I am also nervous about the brake and put it in gear whenever its stopped.
My Bentley repair manual says it should engage with 3 clicks, so you probably need new shoes if the adjustment isn't doing it. But like Mike said, you should just keep it in gear anyway, especially in a hilly area.
yeah i've got it on 3 clicks to lock the wheels, i'll try to lube the cables, but i have a feeling Mikeinbloomfield might be right, and it's just near the end of it's travel so it's pulling back against springs or what not.
i've got new shoes on order so i'll give that a go as well.
Hi speed rII
What do you mean by lubricate? just the springs and mechanism? not the pads themselves right?
And just spray brake cleaner to clean the rest of the parts?
This could be right, i need the extra force to get past the crap that may be stuck there and get enough friction to stick.
No lubrication to the pad friction material. Only clean/lubricate the mechanism parts. Use high temp copper grease.
Removing the spring is bit tricky, so try to clean and lubricate with out disassembly.
Adjust the pads thru the holes in the brake disc.
FWIW I have my brakes apart for a caliper rebuilt....this weekend I looked at the parking brake shoes and noted they were cracked in a zillion directions both top and bottom shoes. My car is a 2003 with 23K original miles. Needless to say I ordered new shoes.
