The invoice from the engine rebuild shows that oil, plugs and coil packs were all renewed and Gerard only ran the car for about 200miles before starting the restoration.

Three of the tyres are over 5yrs old but loads of tread still - shame to waste them but I suppose that's up to the local tyre centre guys or MOT testing station.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

In 2012 my older brother bought a tatty 2003 Porsche Carrera 996. He had the engine completely rebuilt and was well into the restoration when he got ill. It seems he's not going to get well enough to continue working on the car so my other brother and I want to get the car going for him. The last time it was started was about 2 yrs ago. The cooling system has been drained down and the air con system does not have any pressure. Any idea what checklist we need to go through before turning the key? We're both retired engineers so we have time and are practical guys. The car has been kept in a modern dry garage. We did contact the local Porsche dealer for advice but they would only say they would collect it on a trailer and go through it in the workshop - but to expect a bill around 500 - 600. We think we could do this work ourselves. It's the 3.6L Carrera 2 Targa. We're in Staffordshire, England. Many thanks. Paul

POST 2Original post

I'm sure the engine gurus will chime in here but from my reading the actions I would take would be: - New oil - New coolant - Possible new water pump (preventative maintenance) - Check tyre age (over 5 years old will need replacing) - New spark plugs (preventative) check coil packs - replace if necessary - New battery (if the old one doesn't come to life) Then enjoy 996 ownership until the next issue comes up, come on here vent a bit get it fixed or fix it yourself and enjoy again... usually how the cycle goes oh and welcome! POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for your advice Dan. I've also read the stuff on the link you gave about priming engine. They talk a lot about the condition of the fuel system. We can get the Techron fuel system cleaner over here so I might use that too. The invoice from the engine rebuild shows that oil, plugs and coil packs were all renewed and Gerard only ran the car for about 200miles before starting the restoration. So we're hoping these will be ok. Re the water pump - is it famously a bit of a weak spot with these cars ? Can the water pump be changed from the underside - with the car on wheel ramps ? Is the coolant special in some way - or will any brand for aluminium engines be ok ? Three of the tyres are over 5yrs old but loads of tread still - shame to waste them but I suppose that's up to the local tyre centre guys or MOT testing station. Battery is on charge but doesn't hold it so we'll get a new one. Thanks again for your help. Regards. Paul

POST 4Original post

The pump can be changed from underneath, they are a weak point so you should change it. You should use Porsche coolant but others have used non Porsche brands if the spec is correct.

POST 6Original post

Search this forum on how to turn the car over without firing it. Jake has a procedure also for when an engine is rebuilt on how you start it, run it for 20 seconds, rinse, repeat, something like that. Fill the coolant (use a vacuum system if you can get one), then fire it up! It's not like it's been sitting there for 10 years. No reason to replace the water pump. I would think it was replaced during the rebuild. It should not be a big deal. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-oil-leak.html
