Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I also replaced the coils and plugs, chirped before and after
Leading evidence: 'Replace coils and plugs, chirped' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check any cracks' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Ive since taken the entire exhaust apart and replaced all the metal gaskets and bolts, but the chirp persists

When you have the exhaust system apart did you check for any cracks?

I also looked over all the weld joints and seams when i replaced the gaskets to see if i could see any soot marks that might indicate a leak - nothing

While my mufflers were off to replace spark plugs and coil packs, I ran the engine without the mufflers and the noise was not present.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Or maybe an exorcist
I posted previously about a chirping noise that only occurs when the motor is cold, or has cooled off for an hour
The noise goes away after about a mile
The noise also follows the rpm's and seems to make the noise the most when deceleration to a stop
Ive since taken the entire exhaust apart and replaced all the metal gaskets and bolts, but the chirp persists
I also replaced the coils and plugs, chirped before and after
Also removed the belt, still chirps
The only other thing I can come up with is that is must be a mouse
Any help from the resident 996 gurus on where else to chase the chirp to remedy it is greatly appreciated
Oh, 2003 c2
Thanks

Well, finally had time to listen to the sound. You have eliminated the external components of the engine. What I would do is get a mechanics stethoscope, get the rear end up on jack stands, and really try to locate where the chirp is coming from. Top of engine, bottom of engine, front or rear of engine, left bank, right bank...try and at least hone down where the sound comes from. Any other recent work on the engine?
I forgot about that. It still goes on even with the belt disconnected. And if I'm not mistaken, it's a simple test to check. Since it's a motor, I would guess it can be unplugged or maybe there's a relay somewhere.
Where does the SAI dump its air? And does the SAI coincide with the motor rpm's?
I'll see if I can unplug it to rule it in or out
The noise is coming from under the car, not where the SAI is located, but maybe it is leaking air
chirps with clutch in or out
and only chirps when cold, once warmed up, no chirp
I've been all over the exhaust, no crack to be found
what has me stumped, is that it is intermittent, my thought is if it was a failing part, wouldn't the noise be constant?
My first impression upon hearing the clip is the noise is an exhaust leak. When you have the exhaust system apart did you check for any cracks?
Another explanation is not a crack/leak but something loose in the exhaust system. A good shaking of the various converters/mufflers can possibly uncover one with something loose inside.
(My Boxster had a converter with a loose brick. Cold it produced a dull deep knocking sound. Warm it buzzed.)
The source of the noise should be easy to locate. You know it is present upon cold start. You know it is present when the accessory drive belt is removed.
You need to get the car in the air and be ready to pinpoint the source of the noise when it is present.
I have the same noise and symptoms as the OP. My educated guess is also an exhaust leak.
While my mufflers were off to replace spark plugs and coil packs, I ran the engine without the mufflers and the noise was not present. The noise was back after reinstalling the mufflers.
I have not spent anymore time since chasing down the noise, but will in the future.
In your case (and maybe the OP's as well) an exhaust leak which has had a seam/joint has come apart. These are generally not that easy to find as the seams/joints all look good. And because the metal gets hot pretty darn quick one can't feel around with his hands to try to "feel" the leak.
That the noise goes away so soon after cold/cool engine start (along with the realtively muted sound) suggests the exhaust leak is not a big one as it closes up pretty soon after engine start.
Also, given there is I take no CEL this suggests to me the leak is downstream of the #2 O2 sensors.
thanks for the advice
I've knocked on the cans and pipes with a rubber mallet, nothing made any noise
I also looked over all the weld joints and seams when i replaced the gaskets to see if i could see any soot marks that might indicate a leak - nothing
also no CEL's
i guess next step is on a lift for a cold start
No GURU required. Just the right tool.
There are lots of home-brew methods of finding the rough location of a noise. Most shops would use either an Engine Ear or a Chassis Ear. Both tools are now inexpensive enough for diy One well known brand is Steelman.Without the tool, you are just flailing. But that may be interesting if you find other things to fix while you are poking around?
