Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Can someone tell me what is the proper hardware and process for hanging the front license plate frame on my '03 C4S? I just discovered that the PO had jerry-rigged this thing. It looks like the holes were gouged with a butter knife and there are some odd wall-anchor looking things in the holes. I'm thinking about getting a new bumper (for more than just this reason) and would like to do this right. Thanks for any advice. Logger

POST 2Original post

Try Pelican Parts.com, I think I got my front plate holder from them, it's not great, but has worked for the last 4 years. Also try the search button for other applications.

POST 3Original post

Keep the plate of the bumper...place in window dash. There are several C4s/Turbo bumpers on ebay.

POST 4Original post

Porsche has a "kit" that's available from the parts department at your nearest dealer. It's likely available from Suncoast or Sunset, as well. It's rather inexpensive.

POST 5Original post

I dont use a front plate holder.... but I have this in my frunk. http://www.schattenbaum.org/TechArti...ngTowHook.aspx

POST 6Original post

Just got a ticket from the cop today ($124) for not having my front plate on. I'm getting a tow hook plate holder.

POST 7Original post

I got the tow hook plate holder that is the easiest way to go, no bumper work, no problem for resale and I think it looks cool to have it on the side

POST 8Original post

They're real sticklers about front plates here. It's the favorite laser speed gun target.

POST 9Original post

I got a plate holder from Pelican as well. I didn't buy the kit though, just the brackets and frame as they are specific to the shape of the bumper. All the other bits though can be generic.

POST 11Original post

The front bumper is supposed to have two small square holes into which two plastic adapters are snapped and then screwed to keep them tight. Then, the plastic license plate holder is screwed into those adapters (or they may just snap in, I forget exactly which). The plate screws onto the plate holder with four license plate screws. Your dealer should have all these parts on hand.

POST 12Original post

The entire license kit contains the following: 1 x License Plate Bracket (Part #: 996 701 107 00) 1 x License Plate Bracket Right Spacer (Part #: 986 701 802 00) 1 x License Plate Bracket Left Spacer (Part #: 986 701 801 00) 2 x Expanding Nuts For Bumper Cover (Part #: 999 507 040 40) 4 x Expanding Nuts For Bracket (Part #: 999 591 498 40) I sell these kits on eBay, if anyone needs one feel free to send me a PM and I'll give you a Rennlist discount price. Thanks!

I've been very happy with a tow hook bracket I got from a contact on RL. Price was less than forty bucks...PM me for his e-mail address.

How do I tell which expanding nuts I need -- or do I need both? I imagine I'm going to have to take the bumper off to get to them...

POST 20Original post

Nope, don't need to remove bumper cover. The 2 expanding nuts fit in the square hole in the bumper cover. Might be blanking plugs in bumper cover now. If so, those should just pull out. See parts reference attached. Available many places as a kit. http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...-05ion=802-00 Easy and nice. Spacers give a proper slant to license plate. The more I think about, if my memory is correct, you don't need the bumper nuts as the spacers fit and expand inside the square holes. Heres another great source. http://www.warehouse33auto.com/parts.../bi2/0/12623/0 http://www.warehouse33auto.com/parts...22/2/0/11383/0

POST 21Original post

One more thing look inside your frunk. After I bought the kit and installed I found the original kit in the frunk beneath the spare tire tools!

POST 22Original post

This is my solution, just use the square expanding nuts that fit into the bumper, put new holes in plate and screw to bumper. I don't run the front plate currently but if i need to it's ready to go

POST 23Original post

+1 on "Tow-Hook" mount for my front license plate as I take no chance living right across of my town Police-Station... I think I got mine on eBay, it's been a while now. Cheers,

I'm trying to figure out what I'm missing in order to attach my front license plate. This is what I have so far: 996-701-107-00 License Mounting Bracket 996-701-801-00 License Plate Bracket Spacer, Left 996-701-802-00 License Plate Bracket Spacer, Right 900-145-012-07 Screw, Size: 4.2 x 32 900-143-134-00 Screw, Size: 4.2 x 9.5 999-507-040-40 Expanding Nut for License Plate Bracket I can't figure out how to make this work. I can use the longer (4.2 x 32) screws to attach the spacers to the bracket, but I still need a way to attach the bracket to the car. If I put those expanding nuts in the bumper cover, those longer screws in the bracket are too short to reach. What am I missing here? You can see a factory diagram here , but it's not particularly useful because many of the existing parts have been superseded. For example, the mounting bracket I have supersedes the old #29 part that's shown on the diagram.

POST 25Original post

Yeah that diagram seems like several iterations of this thing ago. Mine worked close to that, in that the spacers themselves attached to the bumper. Have you tried placing the white things in the front of the spacer, then placing it in the bumper cover? That might make the screw length a little more useful.

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 14369746

Mike, I'm not sure how I could do that. The back of the spacer has its own expanding nut, like this: The screw isn't actually long enough to come all the way through.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 14369762

Hmmm. That's how mine worked then, where the spacer clicked into the bumper, and I just screwed the frame through the holes on the frame into the spacers. I thought those white things were the new way to mount the spacers to the bumper. I am not sure how far the screws I were sent go either, but I can tell you this thing is not the most sturdy. It seems like its designed to fail before the holes in the bumper cover do, which makes sense I guess. I've already ripped it off once. If the screws aren't long enough to do that, you might just go down to Home Depot and get longer ones of the same width. Sounds frustrating!

POST 28Original post

If you want something "fanthy" without risking scratching the front bumper with the OE mount then check out the Rennline towhook mount https://rennpart.com/product/billet-...e-plate-mount/

POST 29Original post

Quotes source posts: 14369746, 14369805

I might try longer screws; I'm just a bit puzzled as to why this is so difficult! Pelican also list a different kind of expanding nut, 999-591-498-40: Not sure if it's to be used instead of or in addition to the nuts that I have. Those look great, but I'm a bit OCD for keeping things stock.

POST 30Original post

I'd recommend going with the toe hook mount if you're set on getting one. Mine came with the factory mount that someone posted above and when I removed it the front bumper had scratches that have gouged through the paint in places in the shape of those square mounts. The bumper plugs weren't big enough to cover them either so now I'm left with the option of a hideous front plate, or some visible scratches on the bumper. I opted for the latter but if you can avoid it, I would.
