I did this swap on one of my 993's using a non-tip wheel in a tip car.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just purchased my first 911, a '99 996
Car is blue with a tan interior, which is in really nice shape except for the steering whieel which is a little worn.
It's a 4-spoke wheel, and the car is a tiptronic.
I'd like to swap for a 3-spoke wheel, which I've read is a simple swap, but I haven't read anything about the tiptronic.
I've found a nice wheel with airbag on ebay, and it's also a tiptronic but the year of the car it's from isn't disclosed.
Is there anything I need to watch out for when it comes to swapping wheels with autos? Or will any 3 spoke work?
Thanks!
I did this swap on my 993. Sounds like your 996 has the early 4-spoke like on the 993. As I recall, a 3-spoke from any 996 or an
early
Boxster will work, so it should be the same for your '99 996. There was something about the later Boxster wheel that made it incompatible with the 4-spoke wheel. So......if it's a 996 3-spoke you'll be fine. If it's a Boxster, make sure it's from an early one (part number?).
One other caution: Make sure the Tip 3-spoke has the buttons. The Tip buttons from the 4-spoke are a slightly different size than the buttons on the Tip 3-spoke (that even surprised my Porsche shop).
I did this swap on one of my 993's using a non-tip wheel in a tip car. You lose the steering wheel shifters or you can pick up set of MB paddle shifters and mount them on your new steering wheel. Minor mod which I may do if I keep my C4S and change steering wheels. This will be the fourth car the steering wheel has been in if I do. I accidentally shift more than I would like to admit with the factory set-up.
