Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Ideally the sheet metal used for the patch job should come from a wrecked donor car that is of the same "vintage" as your car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone know for sure what gauge sheet metal is used on our 996? I've got a few areas of rot that need to be cut out and patched in front of my rear wheels. I want to try to match the steel as closely as possible...

POST 2Original post

Ideally the sheet metal used for the patch job should come from a wrecked donor car that is of the same "vintage" as your car. Thus not only is the metal the same gauge/thickness it is the same type as that of the car's sheet metal and would have the same contour.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Nobody eh? I suppose I'll just go with 20 gauge... seems reasonable, it's inside the wheel-well and will be covered with undercoating...

Well, like 808Bill suggested measure your car's sheet metal. Cut out the section and measure the thickness and duplicate this thickness. The replacement piece wants to be the same gage not so much out of concern for affecting structural integrity of the car but because it makes welding easier. It is hard enough to weld automobile sheet metal but the job is easier if the two pieces have the same thickness and idealy should be the same type of metal. My info is car sheet metal has some lead in it to help it take the body mold shape without wrinkling or creasing. While the lead helps the sheet metal during the forming process it is a negative when it comes to welding.

POST 6Original post

A really good alternative to welding is adhesives, provided you have enough bond area. Figure ~2in overlap using something like Loctite 8800 structural adhesive (or really any of the 8000 series) of you need it to be at all structural, or ~1in if you just need it to stay attached as you drive around.

It's a hidden area, so "contour" isn't really a concern, and "structural integrity" certainly isn't a problem. *** Just a quick note to those who haven't checked the area just in front of the rear wheels (under that little plastic corner piece) - you should do so! You'll have to pop the plastic wheel-well liner out. Mine was packed with road dirt which was holding moisture/salt etc. and just eating away the steel...

This is a possibility I suppose. I'll have to see how difficult the welding is...
