I found this one at a local used car lot (where I never expected to see one) and price and condition met in the middle just about right with a decent service history.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

24 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Been a member on the forums for a while now, but new/been lurking in the 996 area for a while as we were considering upgrading over our Boxster. And what a great time to get into a 996! I found this one at a local used car lot (where I never expected to see one) and price and condition met in the middle just about right with a decent service history. 2004 Carrera 2. Lapis blue, with savannah beige interior. 6-speed. It did have a from-day-one problem list, including a bad idler bearing, a frozen alternator clutch, (which came after about a week of ownership) and a failing DMF. I am currently in the process of a DIY clutch and DMF replacement. As for optional equipment, It has a clearbra on the front, An in-mirror Valentine one, Radar jammers and Lojack. Dealership installed window tint, apparently according to the sales manager that is "default on all leather cars" Other than that it's all pretty much factory. But for all the talking, here's the picture rewards... Planned things so far include a gundo exhaust hack during the clutch job, the old Boxster had a chinese glass pack and my 951 has a 3" fabspeed system so the other half has demanded a bit more volume from the 996 but nowhere near the reverb of the chinese exhaust from the boxster. that was a bit too much. Also planning a taillight swap to the more "997" LED look and LED side markers as well. other than that, not a lot planned. Like it as it stands really. It has, however made me want to spend a bit of money on the 951, namely on the shift linkage, as the 951 is an all-original linkage, the 996 makes me want to tighten it up quite a bit. Shorter throw, tighter bushings and the like.

POST 5Original post

Congrats! I have a short shift kit in my 996....it's awesome, and then when I get in my 951 it's like I'm churning butter!

POST 7Original post

Love the Lapis. Looks very clean inside. Nice buy.

POST 9Original post

Nice car and congratulations, I like the color scene too.

POST 11Original post

Welcome to the RennRoach hotel... once you're in, there's no going out!

POST 12Original post

Beautiful combo, and looks like you got the nicest (an lightest) factory wheels too! Congrats!

POST 14Original post

Nice! But why is the wing up? Inspecting the bellows?

I feel ya! I'm not entirely sure if mine has a short shift kit on it, as I really don't have all that much of a frame of reference nor have I looked into it, but I have a feeling Kyle will be getting some of my hard earned $$ to tighten up the 951 before I go mad!

Yeah I was chasing a squeak/creak in the actuators and then decided I would clean and put some protectant on it while it was up, it was rather faded and clearly hadn't had much attention to it by the PO Thanks! I really like the rims! The other half is not so hot on them. She wants something closer to what her Boxster had, something with a deep offset face. Those really made the Boxster pop, but I figure with just a spacer front and rear (7mm/14mm) and a set of H&R springs for that 1" drop on the 996, she might be persuaded. Any idea on an offset face rim that would weigh about the same? Here is the Boxster's setup for reference...

POST 18Original post

Very nice car! Love the color If you need any assistance with taking the sound/performance up a notch, please feel free to reach out to me at any time. Word of wisdom, ditch those factory cats and tune it. Two biggest restriction points on the car haha.
