I installed the new shifter, and adjusted that cable so that the new clip that came with the shifter didn't rub the side of the shifter base, and the issue was resolved.

Later, I installed a new 9x7 shifter, and when the old shifter came out, the connector at the bottom of the shifter for the fore/aft cable was all chewed up from rubbing on the side of the sift assembly and had a big rubber piece hanging off.

One of the threads stated that one could adjust the reverse cable (within the gear snifter console); but, how it is done was not explained.

I first did the adjustment, which helped a little, then replaced the engine mounts which made no difference, then did the trans mount insert which solved the issue.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had the same problem on my car and the thing that fixed it was installing a Function First orange transmission mount insert.
Hello 996 Gurus:
Recently, I have been experiencing resistance when I want to shift to reverse gear (2001 Carrera 4). I have read, probably all related threads, but have not got much! One of the threads stated that one could adjust the reverse cable (within the gear snifter console); but, how it is done was not explained.
Any hint would be appreciated. BTW, I know one can do various tricks to get the car shift into reverse, including going to the 2nd gear first, etc; however, I need more constructive instruction.
BTW, I changed the gearbox fluid last year. My fluid ran out before the level of fluid reached to the bottom of the hole from which you can test the fluid level. The level was short by about 1/4". That should not cause this issue, should it? In any case, I am topping the fluid up this week-end; just curious about it.
Thank for your attention to this issue in advance.
Here's a video on how to properly adjust the shifter using the Porsche special tool (about $12 available from various parts houses). I know the video title says 997 but the 996 procedure is the same. Also if your engine mounts have sagged, or your transmission mount has sagged this can contribute. I had the same problem on my car and the thing that fixed it was installing a Function First orange transmission mount insert. I first did the adjustment, which helped a little, then replaced the engine mounts which made no difference, then did the trans mount insert which solved the issue. I also had a local shop who did my IMS tell me that putting a zip tie around the cables at the holder above the transmission (where the cable sheaths meet the body bracket) can help this issue so I did that as well but not sure if it made any difference.
You Tube
Edit: I just saw the post above with the video, that shows the adjustments. You can adjust the cables even without the tool, it just gives a good starting point. As long a you have a full range of motion with your shifter, without binding up or hitting the sides, you are good.
I had the same issue with my 986 Boxster, was very hard to shift into reverse unless the car was warm from driving. My workaround was to always put it in reverse at the end of a drive, and park in such a way that I would not have to go back into reverse after shifting to first when starting out.
Later, I installed a new 9x7 shifter, and when the old shifter came out, the connector at the bottom of the shifter for the fore/aft cable was all chewed up from rubbing on the side of the sift assembly and had a big rubber piece hanging off. I believe that piece was binding up on the right side of the shifter and causing my difficulty.
I installed the new shifter, and adjusted that cable so that the new clip that came with the shifter didn't rub the side of the shifter base, and the issue was resolved.
If you pop off the shifter boot you may be able to look down there with a flashlight when you shift into reverse to see if it is rubbing.
For probably the best instructions on removing the console and accessing the shifter and the cables, see the instructions at the bottom of the page here:

You may just need to make a slight adjustment to the cable that manages the left/right part of the shift so the fore/aft cable end doesn't rub (if that is indeed what is causing your problem)
A new end piece is around $10 I think.
