Hello all
i had a buddy with a 2003 C4 that would drain the battery every night and a half or so. He had a large amperage draw. He let the car sit over night and felt the alternator and it felt warm. We determined that the diodes went bad in the alternator. Got a new alternator and put it in, battery drain fixed. Just a data point for any with this issue. Also PM me with any question about the R&R of the alternator, or diagnosis questions.
Its the easiest of DIYs to exchange the alternater. You had to be very care of the evap lines you encounter. They are very brittle and will break in a heart beat. Also you have to knock back the right hand side holding bolt after slackening about half an inch, so the back end of the bolt goes beyond the holding shelf. Otherwise you will never get the alternater out because of the available headroom. The alternater has to drop down to be lifted over the high part of the cooling lid which lies below it.
I have an Acura 06' TL that drains the battery(new) when I leave it sitting for a few days. Is it always the case with a bad alternator on other cars as well?
It could be the diodes are similar if not the same. Check the alternator when the car has been left over night. Put your hand on it and see if it's warm.
Similar symptoms, different issue for me. I have an open micro switch, or other component issue, associated with my door locks and the central locking circuit. From what I have read, the alarm circuit stays energized and it will drain my battery in about 2 1/2 or 3 days. I haven't had the time to do a thorough diagnosis yet to figure it out. I installed a battery kill switch as an interim measure. My alternator is good.
Suggest a quick look at the Wiring diagram for the Fuse on the door lock circuit. It may be wiser to pull that fuse instead of the battery switch. Disconnecting the battery causes the engine management system to run sub-optimally until it re-calibrates. Use a smart charger instead?
