I installed new F&S clutch disc and press plate along with new Luk dual mass flywheel about 2000 miles ago and when I enter my garage or in stop and go traffic I have to allow the clutch to slip slightly in first gear which is not too abnormal but, I always get a very strong burning clutch odor.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Wonder if anyone else experiences this. I dont want loose the clutch altogether and definitely dont want to cause damage to the dual mass flywheel I just replaced. Any thougths or similar experience?

No way you should smell clutch from slightly slipping the clutch to get the car moving. While a new clutch has a break in I've done nothing special with a new clutch. I treat a new clutch the same way I treat a clutch with 50K, 100K, even 300K miles: Avoiding abusing/misusing the clutch, just using it normally. And with a number of cars all with new clutches I've never smelled a hot clutch except under extraorindary circumstances. (The only time I can recall the specifics was when I picked up my 2006 GTO from the local GM dealer. I had dropped the car off to have a fluid service and the tech took the car out on his lunch break and based on the data log of the trip treated the car to a number of launches to the point the clutch was overheated and stinking like crazy.) Have you tested the clutch for its holding power? With the engine/drive train fully up to temperature take the car out someplace where in 4th or 5th gear you can floor the gas pedal at around 2K or 2.5K RPMs and hold it for a while. The car should accelerate and the engine speed should go up as vehicle speed increases. If you get a flare of RPMs with no corresponding increase in vehicle speed the clutch is failing to hold.

What is F&S? Never heard of it for a 996. Re water pump, yes replace with composite impeller for the reason you stated in your other post.

POST 4Original post

When I had the local Indy replace mine a few months ago I got a little bit of odor for the first bit. I wouldn't characterize it as "strong" though. It dissipated within the first few hundred miles and was completely gone within the first 1,000 miles. FWIW mine was OEM clutch. D.
