It's part of the three-year plan to replace/upgrade to stock (or better) every known 996 failure point and the oil cooler and UAOS are the last of it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks to the good people here, I narrowly averted a catastrophe. I had read that some people found that the base of some oil coolers weren't completely flat and if that happens, you can get leaks. It makes sense to me because the base does not have a milled-out place for the gaskets to sit. My oil cooler from FCP came in last week and it looked funny (see first image below) so I laid in on a surface plate, sure enough it rocked back and forth. Just looking at it it looks like they tore it off a used cooler and welded it to a new housing. I contacted FCP and because I live within driving distance and I didn't want to play an endless game of returns, I said I would bring back the warped one and pick up a new one. What a pleasant surprise, they took the old one and I checked the new one on a flat surface I brought with me and it is absolutely flat (second image below) and it looks like it has never been used. Moral: Check the base for flatness before you install a new oil cooler. My guess is the Porsche brand one costs 2.5x is because someone actually does check, but I can't be sure because I didn't want spend $400+ for it! Bad base on new oil cooler Good base on new oil cooler

What was wrong with the original? One of my engine out services I did replace my o rings.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

HBdunn, thanks for the question. There is nothing wrong - yet. Want to replace the 22-year-old o-rings and while I'm in there, may as well put in a new oil cooler. It's part of the three-year plan to replace/upgrade to stock (or better) every known 996 failure point and the oil cooler and UAOS are the last of it. Yay.
