I'm pretty certain the Porsche Engineers ran tests on the engine probably at ~ 4500 rpm continually for thousands of hours, then disassembled it to asses longevity and calculated it to last a few hundred thousand miles before major wear/repair .

Mine was replaced by previous owner recently in 2022, but given some research on the various forums, it would appear that this is a routine maintenance item every 50K miles or so.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, Long time lurker here, worried about the longevity of VarioCam chain guide/pad/ramps on my 3.4L 5-chain engine. Mine was replaced by previous owner recently in 2022, but given some research on the various forums, it would appear that this is a routine maintenance item every 50K miles or so. There has also been nonspecific reference to the material being updated/revised at some point, which lends to a much better wear rate. Does anyone have an idea if the latest part still require routine changes?

POST 2Original post

Hi , what's up 5Chain ? Glad you have joined in the Text discussion and stopped lurking .. You picked an easy one to worry about, but if you are going to worry about cam pad wear on a 5 chain, you need to have a basis to worry from. Get a Durametric and check your cam deviations to establish a base-line, then you can monitor them as you enjoy the car... BTW , how many miles currently on the engine? I'm pretty certain the Porsche Engineers ran tests on the engine probably at ~ 4500 rpm continually for thousands of hours, then disassembled it to asses longevity and calculated it to last a few hundred thousand miles before major wear/repair . But the owners didn't necessarily drive at a continuous 4500 RPM...I'm pretty certain a lot of low rpm engine operation wears the valve train faster than anticipated...( due to harmonic vibrations in the cams/ chain ) The original 5 chain cam pads were found in some cases to be worn at around 50k miles, but I have seen other original cam pads with over 150K that were in the same condition, so I think that conditions are more important than just the miles.... The material was changed at one point, this is evident by a part number change and a different color of the material. It has been assumed ( and with some empirical evidence) that the new material will last longer, but no data on how many more miles of % better it is.... One rule of thumb on Porsche is always use a part with the "highest revision number". Because it always means a difference, either a change in design, material, technology, or even just the source of manufacture...

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
