Suggestion

I saw a m96 engine that when it was crank the oil tube fill hose would sit in it's carrier, but when the car was revved up the tube pulled out of the carrier and stood straight up fast.

From how often they break, I believe the plastic used for the filler tube is much too brittle to survive a vacuum collapse as you describe and still be able to function in any capacity as an oil filler tube.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Based on all that I have read, I think I have an AOS problem, but would appreciate confirmation. I have two experiences of an incredible amount of smoke, both coming after hitting red lines a few times. After the first episode about a month ago, I took the car to a private shop and he said everything was fine, but if it happened again to bring it back. Today it happened again. In the month in between, all of my driving was in town with no hard acceleration. Toda, I had to merge on to the interstate twice. After the first merge under hard acceleration and hitting the red line, nothing happened. But after the second merge and again hitting red line, there was a huge cloud of smoke for about 1/2 mile, then it cleared. All pressures and temperatures were normal and there was no noticeable change in driving or engine noise. After sitting for 8 hours I started it tonight and it still smoked at startup which I know is common. It seems to me this is AOS, but I just wanted to confirm with the experts on this issue. Thanks!!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, I am able to pull the oil cap off at idle speed. I was wondering if the AOS is only failing at Hugh rpms?

POST 4Original post

All symptoms point to a bad, or going bad, AOS. Probably oil pooling in the intake plenums and when you hit the higher RPM's the oil is sucked into the engine resulting in smoke. Get it replaced asap because a bad AOS can take out your engine.

POST 5Original post

The oil cap test is marginal at best. Measure the crankcase vacuum with the proper Manometer tool, and put a value to the AOS condition. Its possible to have a weak AOS and the "oil cap test" be passed with flying colors.

POST 7Original post

I saw a m96 engine that when it was crank the oil tube fill hose would sit in it's carrier, but when the car was revved up the tube pulled out of the carrier and stood straight up fast. We pushed it back down at idle and it sat there. When revved the gas the filler tube hose once again stood up fast , kinda like on our Prom night 25 years ago, lol. But anyway, I told the guy he had some serious vacuum pressure somewhere and that the hose was getting sucked flat possibly, Causing it to stand straight up? Anyone?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks to the replies, now I have some good leads on next steps.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 14250431

Either the clip mount is cracked and not properly retaining the filler tube, or the motor mounts are so shot that the motor is torquing when revved and causing the filler tube (which is clipped to the airbox, which is attached to the "frame" and thus does not move with the engine) to pop free of the clip. From how often they break, I believe the plastic used for the filler tube is much too brittle to survive a vacuum collapse as you describe and still be able to function in any capacity as an oil filler tube.

POST 10Original post

Hello, thanks for the information, I had no Idea why that was doing that. All I could figure at the moment was I read something about vacuum pressure on the cap.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
