Suggestion

Default mode is always to run the engine on the rich side to save it from possible lean out and damage.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was quoted $900 for a job on the car from Porsche in Lancaster PA. Found an indie who completed the job for me for $329. The job was for installing 2 knock sensors. He discovered that a mouse had bitten through the wires of one of the sensors. Lack of a knock sensor not working brings on the CEL and the computer leans the gas/air as a precautionary measure. The difference in acceleration is amazing. I will have to put mouse traps down in the garage from now on.

POST 2Original post

Hurdi: You probably already know this trick, but when I store my car in the garage for winter I put smalll net bags of mothba--s in strategic places. In frunk and engine compartment plus mouse traps around beneath car. If this happened during the driving season...get a good barn cat!

doesnt lean conditions contribute to knocking? I figured that the motor would actually over enrich the mixture...

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13644339

You are thinking of a lean mixture 'pinking'. The knock sensor picks up on a metal knocking and leans the mixture so top red line revs are never reached. The OBC leans the mixture if any of the knock sensors are not working correctly. Now my top revs are awesome. The acceleration is kind of scary

I thought the same! Hate to say it but the joke was lost on all the new guys.

POST 7Original post

Yeah, giving away your age there man, with the Pixie & Dixie reference to Jinx the cat.

I don't mind giving my age away Ben. In fact I am kind of proud to be driving a 911 at a ripe old age of 75. How about this. I was driving around Pocono Race track yesterday.

Yeah, I don't understand the point either. Knock=detonation; the way you fix detonation is to increase the richness of the a/f mix or retard timing. Leaning a car when the knock sensors are not working seems counterintuitive.

POST 10Original post

Had similar problem with our 2015 Audi A8. Little buggers got into the electronics behind the rear deck and chewed through wires to the tune of $600 dealer repair (not under warranty). Have since installed battery powered high frequency noise generators under the hood and in the trunk. Also put one in the engine compartment of the 996 as well as a plug-in model along the garage floor. So far no more damage, but fall is here and it's move-in time for critters.....keeping an eye out!

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 13651050

I agree! Default mode is always to run the engine on the rich side to save it from possible lean out and damage. Lean makes the engine make more power but rich kills power

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13651050

When a knock sensor is not working the OBC leans the mixture. I had a disconnected one in mine. (the mice had bitten through the wires). A good knock sensor does not listen for detonation but for a metal against metal sound. There is a big difference between a PINKING sound (detonation) and a metal against metal sound. Well at least that,s what I think happens.

POST 13Original post

Never go to autohaus. I have found them to be double or even triple the price to do certain jobs, even over other Porsche dealers.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 13653134

You have something that backs up this claim? As far as I know, a knock sensor looks for knocks. Detonation is a knock.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 13653134

This is gibberish unless you can point to a technical document that explains (a) the difference between detonation and pinking (hint: they are synonyms), and (b) why ANY engine control unit would lean a mixture if there is detonation, pinging/pinking, or failure of the sensors that detect detonation? When my smoke alarm quits working, the alarm company doesn't drive over and douse my house with gasoline; if the knock sensors aren't working, why would the ECU do anything that would almost certainly increase the chances of detonation/knocking?
