Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Y'all know how the window is supposed to come down slightly when the door is open, then go up when the door is shut, right? There's a gremlin in my door. The window does come down when I open the door handle, but goes up as soon as I let go of the handle regardless of whether the door is open or not. I have to hold the door handle, either the inside or outside, slighlty open to keep the window down and close the door. If I let go of the handle, as you normally would, the window goes all the way up and catches outside of the weatherstrip. Called the dealer and I have an appointment this coming Tuesday. Service manager thinks it needs to be reprogrammed. 10 minute job, he says. I'm not too sure that's what it is. Anyway, it bothers me that there's something wrong with my four wheeled buddy, and Tuesday's too far away. I hear a sensor getting tripped everytime I move the door handle. Maybe it's something simple that I can do, like turn a screw to re-align it or something. Anyone have this gremlin in their door window before?

POST 2Original post

POST 3Original post

My door does exactly the same thing. I wonder if anyone knows the reprogram sequence. I searched the RennTech site; searching anything with window gives 100,000,000 hits.

POST 4Original post

If you bump the door into the door jamb lightly the window will go to the 1/4" down position. Then I can close the door.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've bought 5 cars from this dealer, with two Porsches and two other cars actively being serviced. I called last Friday afternoon at 5 PM. They'll sneak the 10 minute job in as the first car next working day. If they charge me a single dime for a 10 minute job, I'm taking my future business somewhere else. They know that . There is a sensor for the door handle being pulled. There has to be another sensor that senses the car door being open. I think that sensor's the problem. With Stan's technique of closing the door, I think that sensor is in the door jamb/latch. Replacing that may take more than 10 minutes. Bummer.

POST 6Original post

Stan - Man, the gremlin must have jumped from your wheels to your window. There seems to be a distinct pattern here. It's the "W" Gremlin! Once you get your window issue resolved, look out for the next "W" problem like washers, wipers, wide-***, er... no, that would be hips, scratch that one! Seriously, I'm glad you were able to "exorcise the possession" of your wheel problem. Sorry to both you and Palting that I can't help resolve the window issue.

POST 7Original post

I suspect the signal for the door open is in the latch. I am goin going out to disassemble and see whatnit looks like. Could be as simple as cleaning and rseating the plug.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Let me know what you find, Stan. BTW, you do know that all these problems are still covered by warranty, right? Don't get too aggresive and void the warranty.

POST 9Original post

Not sure if relevant or same procedure, but had the same gremlin on my 05 Boxster S. The dealer basically hold the window switch down for 20" and told me this is how they reprogram it (actually factory reset it). Maybe worth trying - especially if it'll save you $200 your key must be in ignition position 2. rgds, SM

POST 10Original post

My window (passenger side) does the same thing so you guys please let me know what you find out.

POST 11Original post

I just did this and it fixed mine right up!! Thanks for the tip.

POST 12Original post

I am going to try the 20 sec gig. I looked at taking apart the door; but as Palting said, warranty. Gota911, I have learned that 11mm of wheel shim is a bad thing. When I have to mix paint I'll reinstallate and strap the can to the stearing wheel. My wife asked if it was "shaking like the washer", I think she has played with that shaking washer if you know what I mean. I was stressed out about the car and she's thinking nasty with a smile on her face.

POST 13Original post

Bingo. Chances are you are going to need a new door latch module. There is a microswitch inside it that tells the car when the door is closed/open and locked/unlocked. These almost always fail in the closed position. The car thinks the door is still closed. If you go over to the other side and pull the handle up just enough to get the window to drop and let go of the handle you will notice the same behavior. Unless you feel like tearing the door apart dont bother looking for a plug to reseat. If this is your drivers side door, make sure your manual locking of the car still works after the repair as its very easy to forget to insert the rod from the locking barrel into the new door latch module.

POST 14Original post

I'm glad it worked - as I said by Boxster had this issue and I remember it drove me mad the window would randomly just pull down. I left a couple of times my car with passenger window half-open w/out realizing. Went to the dealer and started screaming - then he did the 20" trick Maybe I need to come up w/a Video Series called the 20" Porsche Fix LMAO have a good weekend guys... rgds, SM

POST 15Original post

My 2001 C2 would also randomly pull down the drivers window. Also drove me mad cos you could not know when it would do it again. It did it whenever and whereever. Seems now fixed due to the 20" Porsche fix

POST 16Original post

I tried the 20 sec thing with the key in pos. 2. I am assuming pos. 2 is with the dash lights on. I tried this with the door open, the door closed. Do I auto down the window and then hold the switch down? Do I need to do this for the up pos.? Could disconnecting the battery help? I am not ready to give up a relent to the fact that the part is broken.

POST 17Original post

can anyone define which is position 2 on the ignition. i have the same prob and i need to try.... thanks

POST 20Original post

That I can't tell you. This whole 20 sec thing is news to me. Position 2 is the same-engine running or not. Try it both ways.

POST 21Original post

I'm on it. If this doesn't cure it I'm getting the holy water, incense and the Ravvi Shenkar out for another exorcism......... I'm gonna disunconnectalate the battery too.

POST 22Original post

I had the key in position 2 (which lights up the dashboard warnings etc. for check) and I did this procedure to solve the unwanted behaviour of the window. I pushed the button down for as long as the window went down and +25seconds to that. It sure helped in my case!! Thanks Mikko

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Naaah. I tried that button pushing technique several ways. No dice. That's probably what the service GM was talking about when he said "10 minute reprogram". Microswitch in the latch needs to be replaced, I suppose. Either that, or Stan can send me the contact info for his exorcist.

POST 24Original post

The Audi, it seemed, was a car possessed by demons. It would back into garages, dart into swimming pools, plow into bank teller lines, everything but fly on broomsticks, all while its hapless drivers were standing on the brake -- or at least so they said. "Sudden acceleration" had been alleged in many makes of car other than the Audi, and from the start many automotive observers were inclined to view it skeptically. A working set of brakes, they pointed out, can easily overpower any car's accelerator, even one stuck at full throttle. After accidents of this sort, the brakes were always found to be working fine. Such mishaps happened most often when the car was taking off from rest, and they happened disproportionately to short or elderly drivers who were novices to the Audi. As you can read, similar instances of automobile possession have occured..The above are nothing but excuses to make the public feel better. I don't think I cars will will get to this point, but a good cleansing can go along way....

POST 26Original post

No Worky for me, broken part. Warranty. I need an oil service and spark plugs anyway.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update. There are 4 microswitches that they will replace. Pobably the door latch, too. They have to order the parts and it will be overnighted. Since this was spur of the moment, the best they could give me as a loaner was a Dodge Stratus. Oh well. At least it's brand new with only 200 miles on it.

POST 28Original post

Front drive car with an Ebrake for cutting cookies. Not that you would do that in a loaner.

POST 29Original post

Sorry to hear about the window problem. I was hoping the reset would resolve it for you but I guess it didn't. I've heard stories about similar issues requiring either the microswitches replaced or the windows control module. As for Gremlins in vehicles, has anyone had a C5 Corvette? If so then the term 'column lock' probably causes a shudder down your spine. GM in its infinite wisdom decided to use an electronic controlled steering wheel lock instead of a mechanic one. This was due to the location of the ignition key and the trouble they would have using a mechanical lock. Well this seemed like a good idea except that the motor for the lock is tied into the security system also. So a few people have had issued where while driving down the road the steering wheel would lock on them thanks to a bad sensor, relay, ect. I've only heard of two reports of this myself back when I had my C5. Most of the time the issue would be the lock would not disengage and you could not start the car from a cold start. It took GM 7 years almost before they finally issued a recall on the column lock, 3 years after they had already removed the lock from all C5s with automatic transmissions. Luckily I never had the issue on my C5 but I think every other electronic gremlin did pop up in the time I had the car. Best wishes on getting the problem resolved.

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Another update, since the problem seems to be with several posters and it may help. They had to keep the car another day. When they replaced the microswitch, they noticed that the cam on the latch that actuates the microswitch already had a groove worn into it. The switch may have been stiffer or stuck, wearing the groove on the cam. They had to replace the whole latch as well. Make sure they check that cam/latch. Thank goodness it's all under warranty!! .

POST 31Original post

Foo, my car just started doing the same exact thing as in OP's post. Will try the 20-second button hold with key in position 2 and report back.

POST 32Original post

OK, seems to be working fine now after that procedure. Thank you, OP, from 11 years in the future!
