However I just replaced almost the entire suspension and that solved some squeaks and rattles.

Later on the suspension developed issues (struts) worn that cause a clunk sound over bumps, so replaced those and old sway bar links.

I did adjust the windows to roll-up/seal better, stopping some slight wind noise...

Suggestion
Check the door limiters - the torx/star fasteners on my driver door worked loose recently, causing a rattle AND improperly limiting how far the door can open.

Suggestion
I once had change under both motorized front seat travel railings and under the rear bucket seats that cause a clunking sound whenever I would go over bumps.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm currently in the market for a Mk1 C2. So far I test drove two cars, and both of them would rattle when going over bumps. Not sure if the noise is structural or coming from interior panels. Are Mk1s known to have rattles?
Thanks in advance!
Here we go, new forum, as always need to deal with some bullying... It's kinda hard to search effectively if you don't know what to search for.
So... apparently there is a TSB - 6420 "Noises at the Windshield and Rear window" that deals with fixing window noises.
Are there any other common sources of noise?
It's a very vague question. I don't notice any noise in my '99 DD. My '99 track car squeaks rattles and squeals like you wound believe. And that's just from getting into it.
Well, I guess, what I'm really trying to find out is, if it is possible to find a 996 with 50 - 70k miles that will still feel as solid as a new car, given that it is well maintained. Or perhaps (hopefully not) noises and rattles will always be there given that it's a 15 - 18 year old car by now.
There are very few cars in the area that I can test drive, so I'm just trying to figure out if I'm wasting my time looking for a 996 without and squeaks and rattles.
We have an early 98 cab and when w got it the sun visor rattled as you describe - if you follow the rattle it is an easy fix if this is loose. I have not had any other rattles or noise the car is solid and No its not known for its rattles or creaks
Bullying?
My seat clunks, sunroof creaks a bit and I have this really weird noise like a relay buzzing sometimes, which I mean to video and ask some of the wise members what they think it might be.
Mostly I wind down the windows and listen to the exhaust noise, everything else goes just melts into insignificance.
After all these years it will be more car by car than anything structureal. The roads the cars have been driven on will take their toll on everything from suspension to interior tightness. Some will be easy to fix (sunroof, loose seats), others get more complicated or expensive. Bad roads wll magnify the problem and even even if the car is tight when you buy, driving it on crapy roads will soon end that. Time wll age a car as much as mleage but in often different ways. Instead of things wearing out, they die from atrophy. Find a car you like, have extra money in your pocket to fix the things the car needs or will soon need, and then drive the hell out of iit while always knowing you've just bought a used car.
Yes, keep looking take your time. Test drive a new one and try lots of old ones. The 996 is special. If you fall in love the rattles won't be a big deal. If you don't, find something newer. Good luck and keep us updated.
I bought a 2000 with 24k miles on the clock and about the only noise it had was creaking stabilizer bars and the occasional rattle of the heat shield around the mufflers. 17k miles later, I've licked the front end creaking, but the dang heat shield still rattles.
The interior has been bullet proof (I can't believe I just said that....).
I have my headliner out at the moment at there is a lot that is rattling.
Few things of note:
- rear leather section that goes across the back rear of the car, those clips form the majority of the noise for me
- Sun roof assembly, check its tight
Also take out all the panels and make sure they have the correct clips. Its not that hard to strip the panels out. Some patience and basic tools is all you need!
Something rattles up in the sunroof area of my car when I am on rough roads. Others have told me they get the same rattle. I never bothered to look for the source. Other than that, no rattles.
Could be something as simple as a loose bolt or clip
Its intense getting the roof liner out but it was satisfying... Car now sounds like something between a tool box and a racing car
I once had change under both motorized front seat travel railings and under the rear bucket seats that cause a clunking sound whenever I would go over bumps. Removed change had coffee money and noise was gone.
Later on the suspension developed issues (struts) worn that cause a clunk sound over bumps, so replaced those and old sway bar links. Oh yeah almost forgot the miscellaneous holding case underneath the radio would often make noise when going over bumps, so I placed a piece of thin felt under it and now noise is gone.
Depends on your expectations of a 17 year old car...
I recently purchased a super-super clean '99 996. The interior is well optioned and appears new. However, I do have a couple squeaks and rattles in the interior compartment depending on road conditions. However, considering the age, I find this is totally acceptable. I even expected it, and it is not a big deal to me. And yes, despite the little sounds, the car feels solid!
If you are comparing a 996 (even a low-mileage example) to a new car...you may be wasting your time.
Mike
I started a similar tread few weeks ago, did not get much help though.
I always put my windows down, otherwise I simply don't enjoy my 996 due to few squeaks and rattles. I was thinking of pulling all of the pillar trims and see, but by doing so I risk braking some old plastic and making things worse.
So far, my worst one comes from rear seat belt area. Sunroof squeaks too - maybe new seal?
All 15-year-old cars rattle.
Once you buy one - assuming it rattles:
Tighten every exposed fastener you find
Verify that all moving items (sunroof, seats sliders/motors, windows, door pockets) are correctly adjusted.
Make sure that all seat backs are properly adjusted so they don't bounce/rattle.
Ensure that the seatbelt buckles for all seats not in use are not hanging against interior panels.
Check the door limiters - the torx/star fasteners on my driver door worked loose recently, causing a rattle AND improperly limiting how far the door can open.
Check your motor/transmission mounts; a busted mount will transmit vibration into the cabin and rattle stuff that might not otherwise rattle.
Pull the center console - there will likely be change that has fallen in by way of the ashtray or e-brake slot.
Inside the center console storage area (the armrest) there is a hard plastic insert covering one of the center console screws. It starts to rattle after you've removed and replaced it a few times while removing the center console.
There is exposed metal between the shifter and the center stack (below the airbag module) where stuff can also get caught and rattle around.
If you have a CD storage tray in the center stack, it rattles. Filling it with CDs will help a little; ripping it out will help more.
Check under the seats and in the door pockets and in the center console.
Verify that the overhead light switches, lenses, and the rear view mirror are all properly tightened.
If the car has a sunroof, ensure that the wrench in the overhead enclosure is secured.
If the car is a cab, that's a goldmine of potential rattles.
The mounts on the horn/airbag assembly in the steering wheel can sag over time (same reason the horns on 996's sometimes go off unexpectedly).
Ensure that the dome on the dash (IR transceiver for the alarm, I think) is not loose and rattling.
Ensure that the triangular trim pieces on both doors (on the driver side, this is where the rear view mirror adjustments are located) are properly attached. The mount points for these ALWAYS break when you remove the door card; use a dollop of RTV to secure one with broken mounts or replace it.
Verify that the mirror covers for both sun visor mirrors are not broken.
"Search is your friend" is the furthest thing from bullying you'll find on Rennlist, so maybe throttle back your feelings 10%. This is the internet, not group therapy.
I have a 2002 with 120,000 miles on it. Currently, it doesn't rattle and drives very nicely in every way. However I just replaced almost the entire suspension and that solved some squeaks and rattles. I have new 997 seats installed which is nice. Let me give you some good advice before making the plunge into the 996 world. You are looking at cars that have been on the road for anywhere from 15 - 17 years. Even if the car you purchase has no rattles or squeaks on day one, you might have several rattles or squeaks on day 100, or not. Either way be prepared to address maintenance, repairs, and potentially annoying minor defects along the way. Also, you should have thousands of dollars, in my opinion at least $4,000-$6,000 minimum (I'm not kidding) ready to burn on the car with no regrets what-so-ever to address whatever might come up. There is nothing cheap about owning any Porsche 911.
