That can certainly change steering feel markedly, even from identical vehicles.

So far I have test driven two Mk1 C2 (both turned out to be in a poor condition) and one Mk1 C4 (which appeared to be in a good condition.

I guess that’s possible, but Mk1 C4 steering actually felt better than the two Mk1 C2 I test drove.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm currently in the market to buy 996. So far I have test driven two Mk1 C2 (both turned out to be in a poor condition) and one Mk1 C4 (which appeared to be in a good condition. C4 steering felt noticeably heaver. Does this sound right? Does C4 have a differently configured power steering?

POST 2Original post

I haven't driven a C2 since well before I got my C4, so I can't speak from a direct comparison... I would think that just the fact that the front wheels are connected to the front differential would make the steering feel somewhat "heavier".

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I guess that’s possible, but Mk1 C4 steering actually felt better than the two Mk1 C2 I test drove. Also, the Mk1 C4 steering felt the same at Mk2 C2.

POST 4Original post

I don't recall the steering feeling any different before and after removing the FWD gear on my C4 (Before = axle stubs into CV joint bolted up to front diff; after=just the axle stub; the CV joint and everything else is gone).

POST 5Original post

Nothing mechanically different that I know about. Are the alignment measurements all equal? That can certainly change steering feel markedly, even from identical vehicles.

POST 6Original post

I noticed the same when I was shopping last spring. Even my wife picked up on it when she drove it.

POST 7Original post

Uh...ok...So, I guess by ^that^ logic Heavier=Better ?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13590217

Heavier means less power assist. Less power assist means you get more feedback from the tires going through the steering linkage, all the way to the steering wheel into your hands.

POST 9Original post

Ahhhhhh...now I get it. Maybe the C4 you drove had a bad ps pump or was low on fluid
