The reason i made the change on the car was not aesthetic and important to keep non-Porsche aftermarket parts to a minimum.

Regarding the light, I do want to use the brake light on the spoiler, but what happens to the light that is on the car....does it still light up ?

The deck lid came with the wires cut and the spoiler had some nasty 1/4" cracks or scratches (hard to tell), but the local body shop that works on most high end cars and the owner loves Porsches fixed it right and time will tell.
Hey all,
Have a quick question, is the underside of an aerokit II decklid gloss or satin?
Was it dealer discretion if it was added as an option?
I know the gt3 definitely has a gloss underside. Wondering if the aerokit does as well.
Reason I ask is my wing is at the painters at the moment.
Some people may not car as it won't really be seen but if anyone has a definitive answer it would be much appreciated!
Cheers
Thanks Pete, was hard to find a reference pic.
I made the (wrong) decision to go satin and they have now painted it.
I'm going to ask them to redo the underside in gloss. Just hoping I dont loose the detail in the part number
My OCD got the better of me and I've asked them to gloss the underside.
They are using Glasurit paint too
So it will be a base colour and now 2 clear coats (one satin and now one gloss).
That should be okay to still see the part number? How many coats from factory, anyone know?
So an update, got it back today. Top side looks brilliant.
Part number looks filled in but visible so not happy. It was black on the underside already so I should have just asked them to clear coat it.
Anyone have any tips on how to remove the paint around the part number to make it more defined? Will post a pic later today.
The more you mess with it the worse it will look. It's fine and as long as the numbers can be read, it will add value to the car.
Yes brake fluid will work. But then what?
You can always take it back in, have them strip the whole thing and repaint it. And then it might look as good as it does now and it might not. Surely there is a scratch or minor flaw elsewhere you can go obsess over for awhile and let this one go.
Anyone know what the lid is actually made of?
Aircraft make a stripper specifically for fibre glass and SMC material.
You might all think im crazy but it's driving me insane and im kicking myself you getting it clear coated twice because it ruined the part number...
Fiberglass.
Unless you want a concours show winning car or plan on preserving it in it's original format for collectiblity/resale(non existent since you have a 996 to begin with), I really think you're making a big deal out of it than it really needs to be.
Only you will know and for what? Another $1k+ worth of work?
I really do just hate how it looks it's exactly what I didn't want.
So I guess maybe ill give it a shot to remove the paint off it. The body shop will re paint it for free if I strip it.

Dan_189 what did you end up doing?
It does look fine.
996s are going up in price...slightly.
I can't read the part number very well and trying to find out if what i bought really is going to fit my car.
Don't understand the big deal about the underside. I want it to look nice, but I don't need to eat on it.
Thank you Sneaky Pete.
The part # is
996.512.901.00
996.512.901.01
996.512.901.02
I wonder if the last octet is the year. Mine is a 2001.
Also trying to find out if I need something special to disable to popup warning light.
I assume the 3rd light on the spoiler is the same as the regular light.
Are you CIRPCA?
thank you
I don't think the .00 or .01 or .02 denotes a year. An MK1 Coupe Aero decklid should fit all MK1 Coupes. To disable the popup warning light you will need a good friend with a Duramtric Pro or go to your local Pcar Dealer.
Yep I'm in the CIRPCA.......you missed a good weekend at the IMS Grounds! More than happy to help you out with answers to your questions.
Thank you Pete.
I have been so busy but planning to go to Huber Winery tour... love that drive.
My challenge is that I still don't know if mine is MK1 or MK2.
Mine is a 2001 C2 Cab with the IMS fixed (I didn't need it) and runs and looks like brand new, except I put a front spoiler that now causes so much lift in the rear and was told by multiple Porsche guys to put a bigger (wider) wing because I only have the popup.
Everytime I look to see what i really have, I get this "Mk1 cars built in 1999 and 2000, and the subsequent Mk2 models built from 2003 to 2005." WTH happened to 2001, 2002s. Dunno. But anyhow, I bought this Aerokit lid on ebay..black and they said it fit my car. I am going to take it out of the box here shortly and look at the part number and then going to take measurements on the existing stock lid and this new (old) one with the "taco" wing.
My car is white, the deck lid is black .I was thinking of telling them to leave the louvers black....but not sure...should be fun.
CiRPCA is great and wish we had more events. I have been managing the Facebook page for a couple years now and no longer the membership chairman. Appreciate all the help. Now I am going to go take the lid out of the box to see what i really bought.
I know you said you'd stop, but...
do not use brake fluid to remove paint from a fiberglas part. I can point you toward some Corvette threads if necessary. But just take my word for it. Sometimes the brake fluid does not know where to stop.
I took everyone's advice took a deep breath and left it alone haha. It wasn't worth the risk.
Part number is 996 502 901 02. Which is the aerokit ii wing (MK2).
MK1 and MK2 wings will fit all coupe C2 Carrera 996s.
As for the spoiler light you can rewire the harness so the warning light doesn't appear. If you need help ill write up some instructions.
You have an MK1. To get rid of the spoiler light, jumper pin 1 to pin5.
To continue to be able to use the brake light(if it has one) check out this cable: 996 612 070 51.
I can't find the part number on either the existing lid or the replacement aerokit.
I did measure the dimensions and they are pretty close, so it should fit. Not sure what happens with the soft top in and out, but we will find out.
I have the pictures and took one of the stock (white) and the aerokit (black).
The seem the same except the stock has a black hard plastic plate with stickers (they put the LN engineering IMS sticker there too), but I see the bolts holding that plate match and there is a piece left on the black one. I would feel better if I knew that the parts are right instead of taking the dive.
I will take the fan and the cables out and clean it up before i take it to the shop.
Regarding the light, I do want to use the brake light on the spoiler, but what happens to the light that is on the car....does it still light up ?
I read 3 posts and confused. One said to swap jumpers (not sure exactly where), then another said to buy a cable, then another that dan_189 was going to write instructions for....I take all three clarifications please
The Aerokit wing is in great shape. It has some cracks in the paint on corner which are weird, but look very fixable. what I think is going to be a pia is to paint under the wing itself where the louvers are.
If you guys know where the lid part number is, it would be easier.
Now I wonder if there is a way to pull the wing off the lid. ...not
thank you guys
Sneaky, once is done I'll post a picture of the whole thing.
You said you don't have the harness for the aerokit. The part# will get you connectivity to the aero kit for the brake light. The car can handle more than one brake light so your others will be fine.
If you don't have a brake light in the spoiler, then you can jumper the pins to keep from getting the spoiler indicator light.
Make sense?
Pics!
Okay so you have a carrera rear spoiler not an aerokit cup or aerokit cup ii decklid. It will not have a part number visible like the aerokit decklids. However it does have a Porsche part number: 996 512 903 00
In essence it was a spoiler part that attaches to your existing decklid.
So in theory you could take it apart, have just the spoiler painted and put it on your white decklid. That is if the black one is painted and you don't want to repaint it.
It will physically fit your car, others will be able to tell you if it will interfere with the roof.
As for the harness it appears it comes with one so when you install it just plug it in. The cable will already have the pins jumped so you won't get the error light.
Dan_189, you are saying by looking at it that it is not an Aerokit lid and spoiler?
That is what I was told I bought. It fits the dimensions of the current deck lid and it came out of a 996 cab.
The question is how to get the spoiler out of the lid without damaging it. I thought that was what you did on yours. It has been a while since I have seen a Carrera with the Aerokit from the factory but they look the same from what i remember (have not googled yet), but it is not a one piece (lid and spoiler).
If I can get the spoiler out safely and you say I can put it on my existing lid, I rather do that. I am not doing this for aesthetics but for functionality since the front spoiler is scares me sometimes with all the air lift and my car does not have one scratch. I need to know how to get the spoiler out of there. I thought you did the same and removed the popup from the stock lid and it fit right in.
thank you
Porschelova......Dan's wing is for a coupe and is a one piece. The wing you purchased looks to be for a cab and I believe is also a one piece. I would get the new desklid painted, remove your current decklid and put the new one on. It should be a direct swap........no need to mess with disassembling anything.
The drop-in units that will fit into the stock OEM deck lids are aftermarket replica's. The rear OEM spoilers are one piece IIRC.
Look for a Made in France or Made in Switzerland engraving on the underside. There should also be a metal plate expoxied in the exposed and unfinished FRP portion indicating the manufacturer.
The Aerokit rear wings are integrated into the engine cover, as Alpine003 pointed out. It appears that you purchased someone else's stock engine cover that has been fitted with a Tequipment spoiler unit or an aftermarket reproduction. It may be a genuine Porsche part, but it is not Aerokit.
The Aerokit I ("taco wing") and II (non-taco) have blade segments that can be adjusted, but the wing structure is integral to the deck lid - a single piece, rather than a drop-in unit like the Tequipment spoiler and lots of other aftermarket inserts.
Heh. I don't care either way - but if the guy bought it thinking it was an Aerokit deck lid, he got boned.
I clearly don't have such hangups, since I'm the blasphemer with a MKII wing on my '99.
Boned?
Nah, it is going to look so good, i don't care.
I do agree Sneaky Pete, but i would have to disassemble anyhow to paint it white and not just any white. This Biarritz white can be a pain after 15 years to match and they always want to paint the whole car for a fortune. If they can match the deck lid, then i am good.
If it is all b.s. and it is not a real Aerokit, then I can return it, but probably will not.
thank you all
Hi guys, Thank you for all the input. You were all right. Now I need a bit more help.
See the pictures on how the car looks like now (yeah, it was quick).
The spoiler is not an Aerokit as advertised, but it is the Porsche spoiler made by Tequipment in Germany.
Now, the group that painted it took the harness that came with the deck lid was cut. Since my existing harness did not connect to everything, they left it off, but I am not sure what to order. If you see the pictures of the deck lid opened, you can see where the connectors are I am thinking the harness comes with the connector to the fan and to the 3rd brake like (I assume that is the little cable dangling in the picture).
The spoiler up warning light is also solid. I know you guys gave me some input on that, but was not clear if :
1. there is a harness that will cover all these connections
2. those same connections take care of the warning light on the dashboard.
Again, thanks for the input Dan_189, Sneaky_pete, Slacker
Nice job!
Anyway this is the harness you need:
http://www.5150motorsport.com/fixed-decklid-harness-with-3rd-brake-light.html
You can make your own but at that price it's worth just buying and plugging it in.
You are right Alpine, you, Dan_189, Sneaky, and Slacker and others made that clear.
I appreciate Dan_189 pulling pictures to visually see the difference and it is more than semantics.
The deck lid came with the wires cut and the spoiler had some nasty 1/4" cracks or scratches (hard to tell), but the local body shop that works on most high end cars and the owner loves Porsches fixed it right and time will tell.
I am disappointed it is not an Aerokit and the seller did not know the difference either. I was looking for the fixed wing and deck lid in one piece. He is making it right though which give me the confidence to buy from them again (they have a lot of Porsche parts).
The reason i made the change on the car was not aesthetic and important to keep non-Porsche aftermarket parts to a minimum. I will never know if the Aerokit may give me better air disruption than this one, but for now I have to love the one I got. Thanks to all again
Neither my stock 3rd brake light or the spoiler brake light will come on.
What I want to know is are they related...duh...I know, but they don't seem to be connected to the same wires or I am missing something.
The brake lights work and did not notice if my 3rd light worked before I put the spoiler. Now I need to see if the lights themselves are dead and if not, I have bigger problems, but I did think that both 3rd brake lights would be operational (stock and spoiler)
thank you
