I have my engine out and want to completely. Clean the block. I have been using standard engine degreasers etc and am just not happy the engine looks dull and aged. I have shiney refinished heads, new waterpump, thermostat housing etc I don't want to reassemble with the core being dull grey. Is my only option paint? Or can I wire brush it? What have you guys done who have taken Your engines apart (except for the block)?

I think if you're real careful (and you happen to have a decent compressor) how you tape/seal and openings in the block you can probably get a nice result with a "soda blaster" (fine baking soda type media)...Good luck

What I found really works, is a Paint Thinner and a soft brush. Lot's of elbow grease, try it, you'll be amazed. It's very messy process but will do wanders where normal engine cleaner does nothing.

Leave it alone, the media blasted heads will corrode in months and the whole thing will look like the block. Unless you media blast it or use some harsh chemicals, the block will not be shiny. This can damage the electrical cables and other stuff still attached to the engine. Not worth the risk of creating a nightmare.

Best I have found is "Aviation Simple Green" made for aluminum.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
