I've always liked the sound of my exhaust but I just installed Fabspeed xpipe cat bypass and kept the mufflers.

I'm running Gundo modded mufflers and want to go a fair amount louder and am considering cat x pipes.

(For transparency...I don't have FisterD's but some of the locals I run with do, and they sound great.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I did some searching but I couldn't find the results I was looking for so, I own a 2001 996 Cab and I am looking to upgrade my exhaust.
I came across Fabspeed muffler bypass pipes and they sound like what I am looking for. However they cost $550 from Fabspeed and from what I have learned in my searches Fabspeed isnt the greatest company. I have found similar pipes on Ebay for hundreds less. My question is has anyone used Ebay pipes and do they install and sound the same?
Also I am interested in the Fabspeed cat bypass pipes and I am wondering if anyone currently has them installed. Do you get a gassy smell while using them? And how is the noise is it horribly loud or is it streetable? Where I live emissions are of no concern so not worried about that. Also is there an ebay version of this part?
Lastly I love the quad tip look and I was wondering if anyone has found muffler bypass pipes that come with a quad tip? Would a muffler shop be able to weld quad tips on for me? Thats all I can think of for now any help is greatly appreciated!
How loud is "too loud"? What one man thinks is too loud may sound perfect to the next man. This is a very subjective thing...
Personally, I think that muffler bypass pipes would be horrible on the street, especially for a daily driver. I think they will be very, very loud.
Muffler bypass pipes (with the catalictics on) on the 996 are very loud. I love loud and even for me, this is too much. There is no way to drive the cat quietly. Even if you you are trying to feather the throttle. It's either it's very loud (during normal driving) or stupid loud at WOT. BUT they are fun if you can tolerate it.
They are pretty darn loud. There are certain RPMs that the noise is low enough the police wont look for you, but overall its hard to drive it discreetly with no mufflers. Plus, it seemed to me there was a slight loss of low end torque.
However, at full tilt, they sound glorious.
If you are interested, I have a set of fabspeed pipes Id sell for reasonably cheap. Wife said they were too loud for her, so ive got them in a box on a shelf.
I researched the muffler bypass pipes when I had my last 996, but they frequently end up on a shelf or in the classifieds for sale. There's a reason for that.....
With the cat bypass some do report an odor, and you'll get a CEL without O2 spacers.
If you want a better sound, either send your cans to Fister or have a local exhaust shop do the mod. I had a custom exhaust shop do the Fister style mod on my cans for $60.
More info on your 996....? Just looking for sounds? Pse? If not and your starting with stock mufflers.. Replace with aftermarket exhaust + 200 cats + airbox mod and you'll find the sound you want. Iff pse already then just cats. Car will sound right 100%. good luck
By far the most recommended "first" sound upgrade is to replace your mufflers with FisterD's modified ones. They can modify yours, or send you a set and you send your originals to them as "cores". They are also a bargain compared to even muffler bypass pipes--with other exhaust options being considerably more expensive.
(For transparency...I don't have FisterD's but some of the locals I run with do, and they sound great. Had I to do it over again I'd go with the FisterD's.)
By-pass pipes are extremely LOUD..
More research will help you avoid making a mistake. Many have any ready said exhaust note/sound is very subjective.
Fabspeed make good products, I actually had their mufflers on my 996 and the sound was loud and sexy..
Fister D's a.k.a. Gundo Hack, hard to beat for the money. Takes away the mini van sound and makes it sound the way you'd expect it should have been from Stuttgart.
Before you decide to go with the bypass you should just take your mufflers off and drive it and see if you like it before spending any $$$. I personally hated the sound and i want my car to be loud. But to me it sounded more like a japanese fart can.
@Rgrove you have PM!
I personally like what I hear from videos and from other vehicles that i've heard that have been straight piped. I don't want to spend the extra money for a full exhaust setup when all i'm really after is sound (at least i'm honest). I used to drive a 300zx twin turbo with a full 3'' turbo back exhaust and after that an FD3S with a 4'' turbo back so I know noise and I enjoy it. For those wondering my car is completely stock except for visual mods (Depo LED tails, headlights, sidemarkers ect.)
For the people that have done it, how much did your local shop charge for install?
Crazy load. I put the straight pipes on my track car and it's about the loudest thing on the track. Fab speed makes solid products. Ii have headers, cat bypass and had the mufflers before switching to the straight pipes. May get the supercup exhaust next as the straight pipes are too loud for even the track.
I've always liked the sound of my exhaust but I just installed Fabspeed xpipe cat bypass and kept the mufflers. The sound stayed pretty much the same and is not much louder at all below 4500rpm. Above 4500, it's noticeable but in a good way. Keep in mind though that I do not have stock mufflers.
I'm running Gundo modded mufflers and want to go a fair amount louder and am considering cat x pipes. Sounds like this might not get me loud enough? Car is primarily track use.
For track use, your car should always be above 4500 so it might actually be what you are looking for. I am not sure what the Gundo mod sounds like so I can't give you a proper comparison. Mine was pretty loud to begin with since i have a full ruf exhaust from headers to mufflers. Here is the before video (long video and not best audio quality as there is a good amount of wind noise) and i can capture an after video next time i take the car out.
Also for the track, you probably want the cat bypass anyway as cats are more likely to fail when used on the track.

The turbo cuts down a lot of the noise, it's almost a second muffler. On a NA car, you don't have this so it will be another louder. To make things worse, the 996 with the engine in the back has very little pipe between the engine and the exhaust tip and therefore, it will be extremely loud when the mufflers are removed. Pull your muffler and go for a nice long drive. If you still like it, get a bypass. You will loose low end torque. I did.
I bought used ebay ones and they've been installed for about 3-4 years. They are not for you if you take long trips in the car. I use mine basically for autocross only and it's AWESOME for that. The weight savings are good and "car people" love the sound. The low-end torque loss is noticeable (I haven't dynoed) but the sound and power up top is amazing.
I've never seen/heard the fabspeed ones. The ebay ones I have aren't lacking for quality, the tips clean up well with a claybar and some elbow grease and metal polish. No way would I pay $550 for two elbows of exhaust pipe, although assuredly the quality is better than the ebay. Just not worth it "to me."
if you're going with a straight pipe for the bypass, then i understand not spending so many hundreds buying one from a porsche aftermarket dealer and instead finding a local place to make one for you. Years ago a friend of mine actually had the local Meineke create bypass pipes for him at a fraction of the cost for his 328ci.
I have the Fabspeed X pipe with 200 cell cats...got it used...it is GREAT. I have PSE on my car so when i need to be quiet i can... Fabspeed makes a good product...they support our site and don't believe all the chicken little's
Thanks for the support! We're glad you love your piping!
Let me know if you have any questions about our exhaust. I'd love to help you out. Feel free to email me or PM me as well for great pricing!
Just incase anyone is looking for muffler bypass pipes, I sold my 911 and the pipes remain in the box bran new and uninstalled. Selling them now pm for details.
I have the ebay muffle bypass pipes on my car. They sound like music after 4500 rpms and ripping on it in first gear is wonderful. However when you rip on it in second from a low rpm they sounds ****ty and because of the way porsches are you almost get a farting sound when your letting the trans wind down in first. Its a love hate. I don't daily the car because im in the military in school so maybe one night during the week and on the weekend I take it out. Its so much fun to rip through the tunnels around here but if youre tired or have a headache it sucks. But if you have ****** for neighbors that's going to suck. surprisingly the California pd have been leaving me alone. I have only been pulled over once for them but that was a tacked on to driving like an *******. I got let go thanks to my military i.d. Hope this helps with your decision
Online high flow cats are about $80-120'ish, glass packs are $40-100, bends and piping can be bought, and after that grab a friend with a shop and some beer to weld something up.
I bought my 996.2 in 2015 and decided to go with muffler bypass in conjunction with new spark plug / coil tune-up. I just didn't want to have to hassel with the mufflers in the future. At first I thought it was a little loud and noticed the loss of low end torque, but it was noticably lighter in the *** and handled better. I then added a K&N cold air intake and the overall power improvement was very noticable.

After taking it out of storage this spring, I have driven it many times and really enjoy the sound. And the performance is awesome. It's not a daily driver, but I look for opportunities to drive it on any trip over 10 or 15 miles. The longest trip I have taken it on was about 200 miles, and love the sound. My original mufflers only have about 28K miles and are in great shape, so I might try a mod. But I'm happy for now.
Fabspeed is a good company. Their exhaust was not exactly what I was looking for.
I went with Kline long tube headers, 200 cell X pipe and Tubi Style mufflers.
IMO a good street/track setup.
Don't go too load where you will be drawing attention to your car by police.
Do your homework, some of the items on eBay are inferrior, welds that can last for years don't come cheap.
Good luck in your search, hope you get what you want.
I went with a Beluga Racing muffler bypass on eBay for about $170 and couldn't be happier. They featured all Mandrel Bend Pipes with TIG Welding and 2.25" 0.D. T304 Stainless Piping. They look and sound great.

BTW, I live a half mile from a sheriff station and drive by it frequently. I usually back off the throttle when I see them or get a V1 alert, and have never been stopped. Not a problem unless you're at WOT, lol.
There are some sound clips available on You Tube do a 996 search with search words like Fabspeed, bypass etc. They sounded vey good to me over a miserable little speaker but who knows how that translates to the real world.
Fabspeeds webpage has some clips also.
I have a full Fabspeed system on the 996 with catless X-Pipe. It's great, but (as John knows) my only thing is I wish it were a little bit throatier in the lower RPMS when I roll through the lot at Cars and Coffee... haha. But seriously, It sounds great 3500RPM to 7k and there is NO DRONE.

Definitely curious to try the muffler bypass. =)
Greetings, before you spend $500 or anywhere near that for FabSpeed's muffler by-pass system, go to your local Autozone and pick up two appropriately sized 90 degree exhaust pipes, $6 each, two exhaust tips, $12 each, and for $36 dollars you have made your own muffler by-pass system. You can even re-use the original hardware if it comes apart in decent shape. Now you can get a good idea of whether or not you can live with the sound and, if so, then invest in the Fabspeed system. I did this with my 1999 996 Cab and my 1999 Boxster base. The Cab sounds great, not too loud for me and I plan to keep it like that. The Boxster, however, sounds kind of garbage truck-ish and I wonder if its because the two exhaust outlets are so close together. Anyway, plan to put the original Boxster exhaust back on but going to modify it first.
