Ever since I installed the Bisteins, I have been getting a ratling noise similar to a washer clanking on a piece of metal.
Leading evidence: 'Install bisteins, i have been getting a ratling noise similar' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean ) whenever i have stuff exposed' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Someone posted in the past six months about the washer sliding down the shock tube because it was installed upside down.

The spring perch used on the e28 would be almost impossible to get wrong though.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello 996ers! Can you tell me which way the spring seat should be oriented. I installed these about 6 years ago. Obviously one is incorrect. Please look at the photos and let me know which one is correct.
or
Correct, I'm referring to the large washer. I'm pretty sure the washer shown in the bottom photo is correct because the groove in the washer is nestled in the circlip. Ever since I installed the Bisteins, I have been getting a ratling noise similar to a washer clanking on a piece of metal. I'm hoping this is the cause, but I don't know if the spring seat orientation really makes a difference. Hopefully, someone can answer my question.
SoCal, I just looked closely at your photo of the shock installed on the car, and it looks like the spring seat is installed the way mine is in the top photo. I can see the circlip.
The bottom photo is correct. It keeps the circlip captive. Someone posted in the past six months about the washer sliding down the shock tube because it was installed upside down.
This should not make a noise but should be corrected.
This was the post.

Thank you hbdunn! That thread you linked hits the nail on the head - perfect reference. Same for the diagram. I guess I haven't cornered hard enough for it to cause a problem, but I will correct this soon. Have a great evening gentlemen.
*Sigh* I see that now. No idea if I did the other side wrong too.
I
did
remember that thread but I was literally out the door to go to dinner and didn't have time to find it. My S/O said, "you can play with your car nerd friends later".
If anybody cares, here's a better pic of what the washer/perch looks like.
Thanks. I bought the car from the original owner at ~38k. He bought it brand new and was a great steward of the car. It was delivered to a local dealer in 1999 and other than trips to Monterey Car Week, it has never been out of Southern California. I try to do a little housekeeping (cleaning) whenever I have stuff exposed.
Since this spring perch/washer issue has come up twice in the last few months, I thought while I have the parts handy, I would do a PSA for anyone that stumbles on this thread while searching the future internet wasteland.
This pic shows the perch/washer next to the circlip and shock body.
This pic shows the circlip in the groove of the perch/washer.
This is what it looks like from below when it's incorrectly installed.
Correct view.
Dang! I need to check mine, as I can’t remember how I resembled it. Update: I just checked and I correctly installed them with the appropriate orientation. I never had any instructions, but I do remember that I tried the spring spacers both ways, then went with the correct orientation.
Yes, I’m the one that posted about that last fall. It is critical that the groove goes against the circlip. An Indy installed mine wrong and it failed. I’m lucky it didn’t cause a catastrophic crash or damage to the car. That side of the suspension fully collapsed with the fender resting on the tire. Always check this!
That really concerns me that a circlip and a groove in the strut is supporting that weight and forces exerted on the rear suspension. You would think there would be a warning noted in the instructions.
I initially thought this too, but given the load on the coil spring which puts a tremendous amount if pressure on the spring seat, that's all is needed as long as the groove in the seat is facing down snug keeping the circlip from bopping out.
When I upgraded suspension on my first e28 25 years ago I had the same concerns (they use the same grove/circlip system). Three e28s later, I've never had an issue so I guess they know what they're doing. The spring perch used on the e28 would be almost impossible to get wrong though. I still haven't checked the driver's side of the 996 to see if it's upside down like on the passenger side. With all the projects I have pending, removing the rear shocks to flip that stupid washer isn't something I wanted to add to the list.
I checked the driver's side today and through sheer dumb luck, I installed it correctly so I got that going for me which is nice. I wasn't looking forward to disassembling BOTH sides.
Update: this morning I corrected my mistake. Man, I forgot the challenge of lining up the lower shock mount hole to the carrier so the bolt can be inserted. Anyway, it seems flipping the spring seat solved my clanking noise. So, win win. 🏆
