Anyone have rough ideas about what a new passenger fender will run me for parts, labor, and paint for an 01? Wonderful fvcking morning

POST 2Original post

Quotes source post: 13447743

You can call the dealer and get a price for a new (but unpainted) fender. A good body shop should be able to give you a realistic quote on prepping and painting the fender. Be aware some colors (metal flake) are hard to match exactly so the body shop might want to blend adjacent body panels too which will require prepping/painting of adjacent body panels like the front trunk lid, the bumper cover, the passenger door. You can elect to have the old fender unbolted from the car and the new one installed at the dealer. The headlight platform can be tricky to move from the old fender to the new one and get the light assembly fitting in the new fender with same fit as the other headlight. Assuming the locations to where the front fender bolt to are undamaged -- in some cases the shelf along the front tub to which the fender bolts to can be bent down slightly (depends upon the impact that caused the fender damage to begin with) and this has to be brought back into proper position so the fender is at the proper level as the other side and the panel fit is correct and the headlight is in the proper position -- you are probably looking at the thick part of $2000. You got to tell us what happened!

Still too pissed and still waiting on the cop to show up so I can file the report. I didn't even feel the bitch hit me, but based on how she acted afterwards I have no doubt she knew. Logging it as a hit&run Large dent above the wheel, but it's creased so the panel will need to be replaced. All the mounting points should still be fine. There is rubber from her tire all over the wheel and a bit on the bumper too, but I don't think there is actual damage. I do have a good body shop that will do the work, though with the 911 being in the shop tomorrow for motor mounts and him on vacation through next week it will be awhile before he can look and give me a real estimate. My query is mainly to get a feel for if I should bother calling the insurance or just suck it up out of pocket.

POST 4Original post

Depends on who's doing the the work and where they're sourcing the fender from(new/used) and if other parts are needed such as new fender liner, mounting brackets, etc. I've seen it in the lower territory $1200 range, all the way up to $3k. I don't know what you're deductible is or who you are insured through so can't make that call.

POST 5Original post

It's a bit of a longshot but might be worth a few calls to see if you can find a fender in the correct factory color at places like Oklahoma Foreign or similar. I don't recall the color of your car offhand but you never know. Reading between the lines it seems that the person that hit you won't be paying for it. If you use your insurance it will almost for sure end up on CarFax, if you pay out of pocket and take good pix both before and after it'll help if you ever decide to sell the car. Damage on CarFax will make people walk away without every inquiring further. If there IS a possibility of her insurance paying then diminished value comes into play. Be careful with this as SOME states (like mine, CO) do NOT allow diminished value claims with first party claims (if you use your own insurance company no matter if they do or don't go after the other party). they only allow it if you claim directly from the other party's insurer. It can be a bit more of a hassle but can work out relatively well. Good luck and on the bright side at least it didn't burn to the ground in your garage like that car from yesterday. :-)

POST 6Original post

That sucks. I've had a couple hit and runs - in both cases my insurance company proved very good at chasing down the driver and his/her insurance company. No hit to my insurance, no deductible, nothing...

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13448095

Nah, it'll be a new fender. We've had it since new and won't skimp. Yeap. Hit & run but I didn't get the plate so chances of finding them is about zero. The car already has 4 (or is it 5?) accidents that were handled through insurance and a few of them (including this one now) had police reports. None showed up on CarFax the last time we checked about a year ago. Don't trust CarFax for anything. Additionally, this is a one owner car and will die a one owner car. Resale isn't important

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13448182

Yeah I pay USAA to do that work for me and they are good about it. With no plate though it's a dead end which means I have to pay the deductible up front and then they'd pay me back if they ever caught up to the woman. Starting to sound like it's far enough over the deductible to just let them deal with it.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Lighting was bad, but here it is. The dent is worse in person.

POST 11Original post

Ouch! I hate when that **** happens. She was probably uninsured anyway.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So the full story is: She was driving a Honda Ridgeline (the semi-pickup/SUV thing). I saw her on the main road (6 lane divided limited access) constantly jumping lanes with no signal and cutting people off. She ended up right in front of me on my exit ramp. The exit ramp merges into a 4 lane divided road where the ramp lane is a through lane and the left lane turns into the right most left turn lane at the next light (10th of a mile?). A bit farther down the left lane splits into two left turn lanes. Coming off the ramp I signal and move to the left lane and she then immediately cuts me off and slams on the brakes (no one in front of her). We get up to where the lane splits and she appears to clearly be staying in the right left turn lane so I move to the left lane (thinking more about being around her sorry *** than realizing what she was going to do...). She then proceeds to come into my lane (of course no signal) when my nose was even with her front tire. This is when she would have hit me, but I didn't feel it. She comes to a complete stop (about 3 car length short of the next car) and is mouthing stuff at me in the mirror. I move the the right left turn lane to get around her. Once past her she (no signal and forcing people to slam on the brakes) jumps all the back over to the through lane (2 lanes from her current one). Then when she gets up to the light she jumps back into the right left turn lane and makes the left turn (want to guess about signal usage?). From there she goes back to jumping lanes and cutting people off like she was doing on the main road. Until we got to the exit ramp I hadn't been near her. Best I can figure is she took her lack of attention/care as me trying to cut her off or something. I should have known staying behind her was the better bet than trying to go around her given what I had already seen from her...

POST 13Original post

Sorry to hear about this Gnat . I feel for you. Hit and run drivers should be hung.

POST 14Original post

Really sorry to hear about the fender - the most important thing to do is find a great paint shop so they color match/blend the fender properly including the clear coat finish - *there are several different shades of black* many shops fail at color match and only high end shops seem to do the best job blending into door/hood. high end shops also understand the correct clear coat finish so there is no excess orange peel/etc.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13448330

We already have a shop that has done all the previous work on the car. He's the only one I trust to work on the cars. If you ever find a good mechanic, you hang onto them for dear life. Same goes for body shops.

POST 16Original post

What color is your car?? thought it was black but now looking more like slate grey?? **and after studying that photo you posted of the fender dent, is it possible to work out the dent and keep the original fender?? doesn't look out of the question ...and i'd save money and buy a good used 2000-2001 fender - any fender you buy even new will not fit properly and will need tweaking.

POST 17Original post

The fender or "wing" as it's known in Porsche parlance is between $650 - $750. The whole repair (very similar to yours) cost me around $2300... That was New Porsche fender, paint/blend etc... Not sure about the damage to your wheel though...

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13448378

It's the metallic (basalt?) black. The multiple month layer of dirt is probably throwing you off Possible, but I doubt most shops would take the work on though due to the labor involved (insurance certainly won't pay for it). The issue is that the dent extends down and catches the flat area around the wheel. That will be tricky to knock out and not leave creases. A good panel guy can certainly do it, but they'll spend a bunch of time on it. She won't accept used parts on her baby

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13448405

Hopefully that is just rubber from her tire rather than damage. Otherwise I'll have to talk to Wheel Dynamics and probably have to ship it back to them.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 13448405

Just as a reference, there are a handful of used A1-0 undamaged fenders on LKQ for ~$250. One used black one(not basalt) that seems to be undamaged for $300obo shipped http://www.ebay.com/itm/01-Carrera-9...pXOQzW&vxp=mtr One new OEM fender on ebay for $400 plus shipping. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-996-...ETB1ag&vxp=mtr If going through insurance then price obviously doesn't really matter.

POST 21Original post

IMO, i would do everything possible to keep the original fender and repair it. ...and pay out of pocket. accident damage carfax + replacing panels puts negative thoughts into potential buyers mind.

POST 22Original post

"accident damage carfax + replacing panels puts negative thoughts into potential buyers mind." Nah... that's just silly. As long as it's a "real Porsche" fender/wing/part - replacement shouldn't have any real negative impact on resale. That's not to say I don't believe that "some potential buyers" try to use it as a negotiating point/tactic, but I'd send them packing very quickly. It's a car, **** happens - as long as it's repaired properly, with proper parts, there really is NO ISSUE

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If the car is never going to be sold there is no potential buyer for me to tell where to stick their CF/AC reports

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So the rest of my day looked like: Didn't sleep well. IT finally replaced my laptop with a used one that looks like it was used to wipe the previous user's *** and/or nose. Picked up the P!g from the Indy and dropped off the 996 for motor mounts and found some *** took a hunk out of one of the Cayenne's doors. How can a day that started and ended driving Porsches turn out to be so sh!tty

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So finally got the estimate a week ago from the insurance. $1200, but he expects a supplement for the wheel. Got my bodyshop to look at it today and he would have thrown me out if we hadn't known each other for almost 19 years now. He expects when all is said and done it'll be between 2 and 2.5 when the supplements are done. The most surprising but to me is that he agrees with the insurance and will fix the panel rather than replace it. He said it will be close, but the labor will still be less than a new part. He really wants to repaint the whole car too. Only be around another $6k (which really means 8). The roof and taco look like crap so it really needs it. Have a hard time doing it when I know it's just gonna get eaten up by the sun and weather again though. I really need to buy a new house with a garage (or 6)

POST 26Original post

Sorry about the damage, sucks. Only 6k to paint the whole car? I have been told that it is much more than that to do it right, but no personal experience in pricing it out.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13513516

He's saying 6k on top of the $2k or so to do the fender. I also know him well enough that his WAG is low and it will probably be $8k when he actually does the numbers. So about $10k is what I would expect at the end, though I'd beat him up over his $6k estimate and probably end up paying $9k. After 19 years I know how he works and he cuts me some decent deals since he's seen far too much of my cars.

POST 28Original post

Hey Gnat, Wow... I feel your pain. This kind of thing has happened to many several times in the past. Why people don't want to own up to their mistakes is beyond me, especially the ones that carry insurance. I guess they fear being dropped by their insurance company or worry their rates will go up and so instead, they break the law and elude an accident. In my case, the guy pulled out of a convenience store and had just purchase a 12 pack of beer. (guess part of his fear was a possible DUI) I was driving down the road at about 45 mph and he didn't look and pulled right in front of me. I hit him in the front fender and caused major damaged. I got out of the car and told him that I'd go into the store to call the police to right a report. (bare in mind this is back in the early 90s way before cell phones were common). When I began to walk into the store, the BP guy shouted that he was "leaving the scene". I ran to my car and chased him down. Probably looked like something out of the "Dukes of Hazard" TV show. hahaha Eventually I caught up with him and got his tag number and turned around and waited for police. Fortunately everything was captured on closed circuit video at the BP station, but this was back when everything was just VHS time lapse and so the resolution was only about 240 lines and b&w. And so you couldn't make out the tag number; therefore, I'm thankful I chased him down and the police didn't right me a ticket for reckless driving. hahaha Long story short... the guy tried to plant the car and was hiding out, but the police caught him and was arrested. The crazy thing was the guy actually had insurance and was NOT drinking at the time and so I wonder... why on earth would someone risk going to jail when you're insured? Lawdy! Guess you can't fix stupid. The damage to the car was about $4,000, but State Farm paid for it and all is good. But I've had my car hit in parking lots and damaged without any witnesses. I have insurance but it sucks knowing I'm going to have to pay a $500 deductible to get my car back to normal. And so I completely empathize with you Gnat and hope you get the car back to normal again. Regarding paint, I echo all the comments... I've had my 996 arctic silver repaired for two small dents in the rear corner panel. State Farm recommended a group in Athens and said the painter was one of the best they'd seen, and sure enough, he blended it in perfectly without having to paint the whole car or the entire side of the car. It looked like factory, but it wasn't a cheap fix, cost about $800 to repair and paint the small section.

POST 29Original post

Stinks when a factory original car is damaged this way; Porsche's never seem to be the same after body and paint repairs no matter who does the work. About 20 years ago when I was living in NJ my pristine Guards Red '86 951 was attacked by a new driver in a Ford Expedition. While crawling through the grocery store parking lot looking for a space this 19 year old backed directly into the right side of the car, nailing the back of the front fender, the entire right door and the front of the rear fender with her land-yacht bumper. She put the trailer hitch ball right through the freaking door. I brought my car to the legendary John Paterek in Chatham who explained he could replace the panels but could not shoot Glasurit in the US due to EPA regs, so the color match and paint texture probably wouldn't meet the highest Porschefile standards. It didn't. Don't get me wrong, the work was top notch but as they say it's only original once. Sold the car and moved on.

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13514120

This is no pristine car. Front and rear bumpers have been replaced a few times. Headlights and hood have been replaced as well as the engine cover and wing. The doors and fenders/quarters have also seen the paint gun too. The only untouched paint on the car is the roof and it really looks like crap now (honestly I didn't realize how bad it was until we started looking at it yesterday). Contrast that to the hood which was replaced when it was about 2 yrs old and other than the peppering of rock chips the hood's paint looks far superior. A good shop using quality materials and top notch labor will make the repair visual indistinguishable from the rest of the car and the paint (even when done when the car is new) will hold up just as good if not better than the factory paint.

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 13514268

Well, considering all this for the time spent prepping, masking and blending you might as well have the entire car painted.

POST 32Original post

i dont see how you could get hit hard enough to dent the panel and also hit the wheel and you not feel it? Is there any chance that some hit you while it was parked and you didnt notice it until later? Either way it sucks for sure

POST 33 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 13515350

Supplement has been submitted and was accepted by the insurance company. Now up to a bit over $2200. Still probably going to go up a bit more as the paint on the wheel was indeed marred. We have to play the game of the local refinisher trying to repair it, but since it was a custom job by Wheel Dynamics they are most likely going to have to go back them for a proper job. I've already talked to them a bit and they want at least 2 and ideally all 4 wheels back so that they'll be properly matched. Nope. No prior damage. I couldn't tell exactly what parts of her vehicle hit me (though the tire was obviously involved based on the rubber marks), but it was not a hard hit. Couple that with me being focused on trying to avoid being run over and a light hit would have been easy enough to miss. I seen odd things in accidents. Hits that felt like your rear end should have been taken off where barely any speed was involved and almost no visible damage and other cases where there is significant signs of damage, but little or nothing noticeable from inside. I expect at least part of that is if you know it's coming or not (e.g. adrenaline).

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 13537089

gotcha. glad to see that things are progressing forward to get the car fixed correctly!

POST 35Original post

If this was the cars first accident, look into diminished value on the Internet. Depending On the state in which you live you can recover money for the fact the car is now worth less with carfax ding. Also look into loss of use - even if your insurance policy does not include rental coverage, some states will allow a daily stipend for the fact you're out of your car even if not a daily driver (for a comparable car, if you were to go out and rent one). Laws vary heavily state by state. Georgia and a few others are lenient and in the drivers favor. Pm me if this is the first accident and I'll give full guidance.
