Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
The window delamination problem is pretty common with a 15 year old car.
Leading evidence: 'pretty common' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'pretty common' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean looking example' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I had mine replaced two years ago for around USD 1800 all-in.

the canvas is in excellent shape so I would not look at replacing the whole roof.

Suggestion
It doesn't really pay to fix it as the labor for replacing the window is the same as for replacing the whole top.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well, I pulled the trigger on what I think is a great deal and got myself back into a 996. Its a 2001 996 C4 Cab, Black on Natural Brown, well equipped with PCM, extended leather, Comfort and Advanced Technic Package with Full Dark Wood Package. It is a one owner car imported into Canada with the original owner with only 21k (33k kms) original miles. The car does need some minor interior work, parts of the wood package are cracking and peeling off but my plan is to remove and have painted gloss black. I'm not that big of a fan of the wood trim anyways. Also the rear window is separating along the bottom from the roof liner. The PO tried to glue it back and didn't do that great a job. It also has the High Polish Turbo Look wheels which will be replaced as soon as possible. Regardless, I think for $25k Cdn ($20k US) I got a great deal even with the minor issues.
Man... very nice! I have steering wheel envy!
I don't blame you for wanting to paint the wood black, but you owe it to yourself to at least see what it looks like if you sand down the faded wood and then stain it to match the steering wheel. You might seriously reconsider painting...
Good wood and brown leather are a sexy combination...
The wood is growing on me, but I was surprised that on some parts there is no actual wood underneath. Aside from the horse area, where you can see the actual wood where I chipped off the veneer, there are some areas where it is plastic underneath i.e the vent "channel" under the front windshield. I chipped off the veneer there only to find its plastic.
The steering wheels also has cracks in the finish around the 2 o'clock mark, about 2 or 3 cracks, not easily visible but I feel it. I will probably change it for the Raid/FVD steering wheel I have in my 964.
Thanks, I am not a fan of black on tan cars, but I do like the natural brown. I do wish it was a little darker, but its growing on me. I like it better than the black interior from my first 996 Cab, it got really hot under the sun.
Congratulations, she's a beauty! The window delamination problem is pretty common with a 15 year old car. It doesn't really pay to fix it as the labor for replacing the window is the same as for replacing the whole top. I had mine replaced two years ago for around USD 1800 all-in. That was with German A5 canvas (the same material as original). You'll have a choice of a double-stitched plastic window that won't delaminate, or a much smaller glass window (for a couple hundred more). I went with the plastic window because I thought the glass one was too small - just a personal preference.
thanks guys. the opportunity came up and I couldn't pass on it. now the slippery slope begins again. I just got my 964 somewhat sorted to how I like it, now its time for the 996.
I have been quoted $1k to fit it with a new plastic window. the canvas is in excellent shape so I would not look at replacing the whole roof. It hasn't separated completely, just the edge. I may try to clean it up a little and re-glue the edge.
One side of me wants to try to preserve it's original state/options, since it is a low mileage car BUT another side of me thinks I should mod it and drive it like I stole it.....
Option B. Definitely option B. If you do it tastefully and save your original parts you can always return it to stock. But these cars were meant to be driven.
Totally agree. Very nice looking car btw
I have a guy in Florida refinishing my steering wheel and a couple of the other wood bits; pics to follow when they're done.
Oh I am definitely going to drive it, I am a firm believer they need to be driven. Just not sure if I will mod it, but if I do I will definitely do it so I can return to stock if need be.
