My mechanic said they were a perfect fit to my 2001 996.1 3.4L.When I checked, my original exhaust manifold on the passenger side only had 1 or 2 bolts not rusted and missing the heads.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey 996 forum,
Im going to order a Top Gear x pipe and I was wondering if there was a preference on size between the two 200 cell cat options. There are 63mm and 54mm options which are both in stock on their website. I would really appreciate it if anyone who has experience with either of these x pipes could help me decide on which one is the better of the two.
Thanks,
Jgarage
@jgarage
when I purchased the xpipe from top gear, the only option was the OE 54mm. Fit was perfect, although I have a search does reveal some folks saying the pipes are 55mm or 2.25 in. As always trust but verify. I really like the top gear headers cars and valved mufflers. My mechanic said they were a perfect fit to my 2001 996.1 3.4L.When I checked, my original exhaust manifold on the passenger side only had 1 or 2 bolts not rusted and missing the heads. I could have reused the manifold but I'm a sucker for headers and it's my car. Even with a tune by vivid, the 3.4 is pokey under 2.600 rpm, but after the vvt kicks in up the Rev range I'm happy with power delivery. I've had this on my daily for about a year, no issues at all. I kept my stock parts except the mufflers. They were rattling when shaken so I let my guy dispose of them. Hopefully someone cut them open and repaired. My car is a lifetime southerner so no reason they can't be refurbished, I just couldn't be fussed. My Indy is a stickler for quality and OEM parts, and doesn't let me buy my own unless it's something aftermarket like headers or cat. He's doing the UAOS and some other aftermarket parts and will warranty through technet for 3 years or 36k miles on all parts and labor. He did a great job locating the correct Mount points for the valve exhaust module and adding it to the electrics and vacuum. It looks pretty racecar. Do you do your own work? When I'm retired and my 996 is restored to it's former glory, stock but OEM+ as they say, it will have cost me far more than what I can sell it for. But that time I will have my own garage and a consumer lift in it, so I'm hoping, over time, to recoup some of that irresponsible spending. That's a long way around to say that I am grateful for a cheaper option than the big names in aftermarket exhaust. The topgear parts are made in the UK and the folks at FGP, as well as Lee at 9werks sing their praises. I honestly only wish I had done one thing before installing them, and that's to have them ceramic coated / dipped. I love those off white pipes👍
I have the Top Gear headers 54mm x-pipe cats and mild mufflers on my 01 C2 Cab. Very happy with the sound and lack of drone on the highway. Sounds quiet enough around the neighborhood and loud enough at WOT. I considered the bigger pipe (more airflow is better?!?) but thought it might be too loud. No fitment issues but I would advise getting OEM clamps since the ones they provide were cheap u bolt type that didnt suit the car IMO.
I ended up with the stock size / non big bore for my 3.8 stroker and paired the x pipe / 200 cell cats with the sport mufflers and had a local shop fister mod the mufflers. No drone and the tone is much better and sings above 4k rpms. The sport mufflers were an upgrade from fisters as I wanted more agressive tones more often but the sport mufflers themselves droned and sounded kinda dull even though they are touted as the louder version. Once i decided to modify them as they were already installed, I got my agressive tone that I wanted plus the mufflers themselves now acts as a hem res and I have zero drone and no lulling at lower rpms. Loud on cold start but quiet around the neighborhood and weighs way less than stock. Fit was spot on with aftermarket headers. As mentioned above, I wish i had them ceramic coated to block some heat but I need to smog soon so maybe I will get them cerakoated or similar this summer.
Here are the headers I bought. One or two bolts going through the flange to block needed light massaging but flange to x pipe was perfect:

Here are the mufflers I had a shop "Fister" and add a bypass before the can. Great fit as well and very light:

Funny. I did the same and ordered all new hardware from OE / OEM, FCP Euro or similar. I'm glad I did, the parts sent were cheap, and some of my parts, despite mine being a southern car, were due for replacing.
I ordered the valved boxes, valves open is too loud on the highway. But fun when out for a spirited drive on a sunday AM. All at 55 or under of course. I would not want valves open all the time, even at 2500rpm it's too loud for an older fellow in a 911. I've an image to uphold after all. Flat caps and chino, golf clubs in the back wot wot?
