Though, I expect to buy a Cayman at some point in the future...not to replace the 996 but, to keep it company in my garage.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone. I have been considering a 996 mk1 as a good value option for a car to use for AutoCross and DE but also to drive on weekends. Not a dedicated track car but one I could modify over time. However as I have been looking at the 996 mk1s I have seen the 987.1 Cayman S are about the same price. The Cayman has about the same performance but would be newer. The 1999 996 can have LSD as an option but the Caymans can have PASM as an option. Obviously mid-engine vs rear is one factor. I have a 987.1 Boxster S and love it. What do people think?

POST 2Original post

If you have the Boxster already, then you already know how the Cayman will be. Just stiffer. If AutoX is your thing, the Cayman is by far the better choice. Honestly the only reasons I could give for the 996 over the 987 Cayman is the interior (I like the 996 interior, well at least the "herd-o-dead-cows" version we have, over the 9x7 version) and if you need a semblance of practicality. The 996 is a good car and at bargain prices, but every time I've driven a 986 or 987 I've been impressed by how much more balanced and crisper it was when not taking it to the edge. Last I looked the Cayman prices were well above the 996 still. If the 987s have fallen to the 996 range maybe it's time to look at the market again...

Much agreed. I too was in the market for a 987.1 and for the money and the for many of the reasons listed above, I bought a 996. Though, I expect to buy a Cayman at some point in the future...not to replace the 996 but, to keep it company in my garage. The driving dynamics and the characteristics of the Cayman are just awesome. Mike

POST 4Original post

My father recently bought a 987 Cayman S as his retirement track car and I got some seat time in the car at Pocono in June. If you are looking for a dedicated track car or quasi-track car, the Cayman is the one to have. With that being said, an LSD and a 3rd radiator are almost mandatory for the Cayman if it is going to be the used on the track consistently. Both cars have very comparable power/weight ratios, but that mid engine setup is just amazing at the limit. On the other hand, the 996 is a far superior street/highway car. An available sunroof, interior space and outward visibility are much better, without even getting into rear seats that can be used in a pinch.

POST 5Original post

If you already have a Boxster, I'd go for the 996. Is residual value matters to you at all, the 996 will most likely hold value longer and better than the Cayman.
