Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Fill through a service valve' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check ball inside' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Also, the inside of the fill valve looks like it has a check ball inside.
Check ball question, pressure alone will get the job done

My initial temptation was just to fill it through the overflow port; but, Porsche must have had a reason for the design; I'm guessing some critical parts need filled prior to start up - might as well do it right.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm preparing to change the tiptronic fluid in my '04, which unlike Mk I models is filled through a service valve. In preparation, I rigged the garden sprayer apparatus with an a/c hose, etc.., as described in various articles. After removing the cap from the valve, I found that the Schrader type valve is larger than an r-12 fitting. My questions are: Is there a female fitting readily available in the correct size from a convenient source that will work? Also, the inside of the fill valve looks like it has a check ball inside. Is it necessary that the fitting used have something to depress that, or will the pressure alone suffice?
Thanks in advance for answers & ideas!
I can answer the check ball question, pressure alone will get the job done. The factory fitting does not have anything that pushes the ball up or anything like that.
OP, I have the step by step instructions for this procedure from the Porsche workshop repair manual. If you message me your email address I will send you a pdf copy of those instructions.
Hey EJ, PM to follow. I've read all available materials and look forward to seeing yours, as well (I'm a huge measure twice, cut once sort). I visited the hydraulic shop this morning and ordered the proper connector - it's a female M14 that terminates to a 1/4" barb fitting, which I'll add to the apparatus that I've arranged so far, which looks remarkably like yours (without the pressure gauge). My initial temptation was just to fill it through the overflow port; but, Porsche must have had a reason for the design; I'm guessing some critical parts need filled prior to start up - might as well do it right. Thanks again for taking the time to provide the valued assistance. "All things considered, I'd rather be in Philadelphia." W. C. Fields 1880–1946.
